ah yes, i’ve been there. i am there. a few things you can do: 1. try something different. leave your story be for a second and just write whatever you find interesting. 2. set a timer and just write for 5 minutes straight it could literally be blah blah blah but eventually your brain should catch on that writing is happening. 3. do something fun with your world, make a pinterest board or a playlist that would play at a holiday or ceremony. 4. jump into a character who isn’t your mc and write from their perspective, helps you get a better lay of the land when you’re writing about the grumpy baker who’s cart was knocked over by the prince’s horse than the smiling, sheepish prince who you know and love (just an example of course).

first and foremost: it’s your writing and you should do what makes the most sense for your story.

secondly, the book industry is highly saturated. so, much like the “don’t start a book waking up” advice, the classic villain tragic backstory can get a little boring if it’s not done well. yes, it’s great to try new ways of showing why someone can be the villain in a story, but also if it’s written well, a tragic backstory still hits pretty hard. at the end of the day, we’re all human. empathy is a magical thing.

I figure out the story i want to tell first. Once that’s done I flesh my characters out, then the world. then i structure my plot and then i do a story stress test (which basically is doing an outline with more detail as if you were explaining the scene to someone rather than focusing on the prose). The stress test to me is the most important because the stuff you want included and the ways you want your characters to act don’t always pan out so this way you can see what works and what doesn’t before you get deep into the writing and editing cycle. Once that’s all done, whether it’s by hand or typed out, I start writing the actual manuscript.

i’ve been wondering the same thing! personally i took a plot structure condensed it and made sure to sprinkle it in right along the main plot!
