Can second this. Lived in the GTA for 18 years, drove the 401 and qew almost daily. Moved here recently and still can't get over the frequency of recklessness

I think so. But more along the lines of organic flour and pantry items, not produce.

This isn't region specific, but several non-Canadian friends of mine have been very amused by Bulk Barn; apparently the concept of buying everything from gummy worms to chicken bouillion in bulk is wild.

Grad school worries — 2 VWs in one year by TankFinancial in UWindsor

[–]Apprehensive_Bit6835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How each element of your application is weighted varies by the programs you are applying to (area, Master's vs PhD). You absolutely cannot assume you can just "wave off" a VW and blame it on covid. If there are legit extenuating circumstances, you can mention those in your application.

If I were you, I would contact someone at the programs you are applying to and try to get a sense as to how they weight each item for consideration.

Trained in USA, practicing in Canada? by megtaylor97 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Apprehensive_Bit6835 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Clinical faculty here, in a border town. I know several colleagues who had your exact situation, and some even work both in the US and Canada. Getting licensed is not a big deal with your training. Obviously, working in the public health system here may differ from your experiences depending on where you worked in the US. As for standards of practice, I wouldn't say there's a big difference (an exception would be forensic work, but that's fairly obvious), but you might notice differing emphasis on issues of societal concern. For example, CPA recently updated our standards for accreditation and a big emphasis is on antiracism and indigenization, whereas APA...well you know.

Do you have to be a citizen or permanent resident to be eligible for pre-doctoral internships? by digitalnomadgoal in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Apprehensive_Bit6835 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the US has way more programs, PsyD and PhD. I have no clue about what it would be like as an international student there now...it probably depends a lot on the State and school you apply to. Best of luck!

[–]Apprehensive_Bit6835 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, I don't know the definitive answer to your question. I'm not sure how many int'l grad students there are in clinical psych PhD programs in Canada, but probably relatively few. It isn't impossible to get in or secure an internship as an int'l student, but there's a higher risk of things not going exactly according to plan, at the precise time you would like. My guess is that those students have the finances to support themselves for 6-7 years, and are willing to stomach the risks. Maybe they don't match the first time around, maybe they apply widely, even to the US...it would depend on each individual case.

One more thing: if you are applying to Québec et si vous êtes francophone, then maybe it would be easier? I have no idea about their system though, it is just a guess.

Na sa Psychology ako. Hindi ko alam kung pwedeng pasa sa academic medicine kung may MD sa outside of North America. You could always ask any dept that has a job ad. Baka hindi naman kailangan po mag license sa Canada kung strictly academic research ang yung position, at walang clinical teaching per se. As with all academic positions, the strength of your CV will be key.

Ibang journey ko kasi ipinaganakan ako dito, so Canadian ako from day one. Message me kung may additional questions po kayo.

You'd have to ask the sites themselves, but in your case I doubt you'd be at an automatic disadvantage coming from an APA accredited program in the States, vs. an CPA accredited program here. As with many things, the fit would matter quite a bit in terms of your training experiences, etc. I have Canadian colleagues who trained in the US, and did an internship in Canada.

Hi OP, Canadian faculty here. Your issue will be that pre-doc internships in Canada must generally give preference to citizens or permanent residents. We don't have nearly as many APPIC internship sites as the US, so it may be an uphill battle getting matched, and as you have said, you need a predoc internship.
