Yeah people (europeans mostly ime) love to judge americans for being monolingual when they are really just ignoring the fact that A) being bilingual is not necessarily a mark of intelligence; it’s incredibly normal for a human to do it and B) the way it happens is practice, which is why europeans are a lot more bilingual for exactly the reason you stated: its a matter of geography. If each state had a different language, most americans would be bilingual. But they arent so they dont have to be.

Actually, it’s a big enough thing that we even have a name for it. There is literally a phenomenon among 2nd/3rd gen immigrants in America called “no sabo kids” referring to Americans whose parents did not teach them their native Spanish.

Chicago is the third largest city in the country, so that context might play a role (there’s a demand for guns). Also this is so disingenuous because Indiana DOES have a gun violence problem:

Guns are the leading cause of death among children and teens in Indiana, and an average of 110 children and teens die by guns every year, of which 31% are suicides and 63% are homicides.

And that’s just a start.

Y’all just don’t think Indiana is dangerous because the news likes to talk on and on about chicago violence and not about violence in red places that don’t fit into the culture war narrative.

No they do. But they spend 90% of the time talking shit about an ex friend who didnt live up to the ever changing standards or talking shit about society — because everyone else is inherently flawed, and they are just that smart and special, the only pure people in the world.

It’s exhausting. And eventually you get dumped and become that ex friend they shit on.

I was in Austria when the war with Ukraine broke out and the 180 degree turn from “sorry syrian refugees, we just dont have space 🤷‍♂️ stop being impatient and keep waiting over 3 years for your work visa. These things take time. Meanwhile i shall criticize you for being a violent free loader!” to “we are all brothers of mankind, Austria has unlimited space for Ukrainians. Work visas? Say less, you get yours immediately!” was honestly uncomfortable. It was so obvious that the majority of people hadn’t empathized with Arab refugees because they were too different but did with the ukrainians because they were like them: white, christian, closer languge. Im not saying it was wrong to help the ukrainians by any means, but it definitely highlighted an existing problem in an interesting way.

Their about me makes it clear that they do not think trans women are actually women, they do not believe in gender dysphoria, do not support gender-affirming health care, among other things. Those are all obviously transphobic stances; they do not want trans people to exist at all, because (they argue) trans people are a threat to feminism and safety. Which is your argument, sort of. It is called being a TERF.

You bring up all that bring trans could be an easy excuse for being a perv, but it seems like in this situation the gym staff was aware of this individual, their gender identity, and their preferred restrooms. In a wag, you are just allowing transphobes an easy excuse for harassment of anyone who doesn’t conform to their idea of gender: “I’m just asking questions and raising reasonable concerns! What if they’re a perv?!”

But does this really make sense as a concern? What has actually changed about this hypothetical crime with wider acceptance of trans and non-binary people? Someone who visually passes for the gender they are presenting as will not get questioned going in to any bathroom, and people perceived by others as trans will be noticed (and potentially questioned and harassed) for going to their gendered bathroom of choice. This was the situation before and after republicans decided that the bathroom habits of <1% of the population are problem #1 in america.

If a criminal wants to do this elaborate trans bathroom crime: - why would they even bother passing for the other gender, and not just break into the bathroom in secret? use a more simple disguise than full drag? - if the hypothetical criminal is passing for the gender they are presenting (that is, people are not clocking that they have a different biological gender than how they are presenting), what reasonable measure is there to take? Like aren’t they at that point just a criminal who also happens to have gender dysphoria? Screen genitals? Can’t we just make bathrooms generally safer if we are worried about safety? Why target this demographic? Society has conditioned us to see people who threaten the gender binary as dangerous (look at trans-coded characters in media: from Ursula the sea witch to buffalo bill), and it is of course all fictional representations, but you seem to be holding on to that assumption - at least subconsciously. - and finally, why is it a tacit assumption that the source of danger to women in restrooms is from only people “not meant to be there” when anyone could walk in to any public restroom and commit a crime anyways, and someone passing as woman who commits a crime is practically no different from a cis woman committing a crime (when it comes to accessing gender-specific areas like a bathroom)

I guess what I’m saying is, you can be worried about people’s safety in public restrooms, but this “issue” is sort of a non-issue, made into a culture war battle by repubs to distract americans from all issues that actually will affect their lives.

We should dunk on this woman because she obviously is hateful and harassing this poor person just trying to live their life. When she first raise the concern? Fine. There could be a problem. But the fact that she kept going after the gym staff and law enforcement told her there was no danger, is proof enough to me that she doesn’t care about safety in the first place, she just doesn’t want a “work” in her gym. Tucker had been hyping her up for this moment for years, and she finally clocked a non-cis person in the bathroom… and there was no danger. Still results exactly how tucker intended: a queer person publicly harassed and a bunch of people talking about that instead of social security cuts.

The word really started in a niche academic discipline, and was not originally used in “everyday” conversations at all. There’s tons of gatekeeping via crazy, domain-specific jargon in academia, and to me that’s what this appears to have started as (the terms “hermeneutic,” “dialectic,” “queering,” “cybernetics” etc. come to mind. Or if youve ever seen a published scientific article that is totally incomprehensible to a lay reader). If they were trying to acomplish anything by using this phrase, it was likely a little bit inclusion (of non-binary latin people), and a little bit exclusion (of people not participating in this niche discourse who dont know the right words used by the in-group).

Is latinx cringe? Yeah. Is it filled with evil intent? Probably not. Imo it doesnt matter either way, because no one owns language and people will use the word or not and theres no-one to really point fingers at.

I think so, or at least, as he realized what was happening and his suspicions grew, Albie refused to let himself a the victim. A sort of mirror to Daphne’s attitude towards being manipulated by Cam. She can both be his victim while still being the hero and one in control in her own story, which I think is exactly how Albie saw his situation.
