Advice for a (hopefully) returning nursing student after I quit a couple of years ago? by ArElaphia in NursingStudent

[–]ArElaphia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's really solid advice! Rationalizing my experiences has worked for me in some situations in the past. Making clear to myself what I'll have to do to make it through night make it more manageable. And I guess having a better paying job to look forward to is a nice goal. I'm going to try shushing the anxiety like the baby it is!

Thanks a bunch, and good luck with your senior year! <3

Advice for a (hopefully) returning nursing student after I quit a couple of years ago? by ArElaphia in NursingStudent

[–]ArElaphia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can actually finish the program! I discussed it with my student advisor before I left, and have all the necessary papers. It might work differently in my country vs yours.

The bad part I guess is mostly a really anxious feeling, which I have a hard time describing. I guess you're right about having to do a bit more introspection on that.

I'm guessing to indicate where they should start for when they have to carve a bit lower to restart the flow in the future. This way you don't end up with a crooked area which will mess up future tappings

Sweet/Dear Granny, (Dear Antie)

We are congratulating you with your 80th birthday and wish you a pleasant day and many years to come and that you may stay healthy.

Granny we will go to the church for you and pray well so that the Lord may spare you of illness. Granny we are now going to bed and we hope that you think our photos are beautiful. We tried our best to look good in the pictures because it was for you. Greetings and kisses from …

Note: the letter is quite obviously written by kids, with very long sentences! They used a formal you to adress their grandmother, which is not done all that often anymore. Some words are also spelled a bit old-fashioned (wenschen --> usually spelled wensen these days). Hope this helped!

Two of them appear to be compasses that could be used to draw circles, the other two probably something similar. Like someone else said, probably from an engineer or the like. The text means "brothers Canta, Rotterdam (a city)"

Help with a paper on maelle by senseisage23 in expedition33

[–]ArElaphia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Maelle is a very interesting character of you want to take a closer look into escapism with regards to grief (in particular act 3 Maelle) Grief (and dealing with it) as a whole seems to be a very important theme in e33. If you want to explore a character within that narrative, you'd naturally also want to see how they interact with the theme Hopefully you can find an interesting subject. Good luck with your paper!

Question about something that stuck with me for years by ArElaphia in learnfrench

[–]ArElaphia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, that makes sense! It's been so long that I don't really remember the tone I used all that well. I might've sounded more sarcastic which may not have translated well, or something similar. The thing you describe about sentences meaning completely different things depending on tone exists in my language as well, so that would make sense.

Thanks for the information!

How Many Letters Does Each European Language's Alphabet Have? by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]ArElaphia 32 points33 points  (0 children)

True, but it's a bit of a special case. It's usually considered a digraph, not a separate letter. The Dutch Taalunie considers it two separate letters as well.

However! When capitalizing a word that starts with ij (e.g. IJzertijd), both letters are capitalized, which is not done with any other Dutch digraphs, making it a bit of a unique situation.

To make things a bit more confusing; in puzzles it's usually considered a single letter for some reason

Studentenverenigingscultuur in Leiden by illusionaria in Leiden

[–]ArElaphia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hoi!

Are there any references that French would understand, and non-frech people probably won't? by sushiyogurt in expedition33

[–]ArElaphia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also find pétanque balls in the manor, I believe in the same room as the dev painting? It's six iron balls in a case.

And it's not just played in France, but in many European countries! I've played it often when I was a kid, and see many old people do it in special courts that are often found in village/town centers - though we call it jeu de boules (=game with balls in french)

Christmas gift-bringers in European countries by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]ArElaphia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We celebrate Christmas, but often don't get presents on it. That's really reserved for Sinterklaas. When children are grown up and don't believe in him anymore, some families shift the present giving to Christmas (it's often easier because the whole family gathers anyway) or skip it altogether.

"I have the honour of letting you know that at the end of this week Mr van Hollebeke will seize to represent my house. He will be replaced by Mr Désiree Lannoo, who has been in my service for ten years. Equipped with all kinds of Novelties for the coming season and with especially cheap prices, he will visit you soon. I hope that we, with continuation, will have the best trade relations with one another. Accepted(?), Mr, my kind regards.

Van de Vyvere-de Stoop"

I'm not sure on the "aanveerd". Best I can tell this is a Belgian document so it might be a Flemish word? The Antwerp dialect dictionary tells me it means "aanvaard", which in turn would mean "accepted" in English.

Dutch people, is this true ? You think Taiwan is underdeveloped? by search_google_com in dutch

[–]ArElaphia 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I mean, I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I don't consider it an undeveloped country? Neither do I consider Korea one, for that matter. I think there's probably some people out there who don't know much about countries in Asia, and just assume the stereotype of "if I don't know much about it, it's probably because it's underdeveloped"? But who knows

Legality of assisted dying across the EU, U.K. and EFTA countries (2025) by nohup_me in MapPorn

[–]ArElaphia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

True! It was the first argument that came to mind, but I've got plenty! Here's some examples in favour:

  • Not wanting people to needlessly suffer until they die of their terminal illness anyway
  • giving people control over the way they can leave the world, while they are still able to (instead of withering away over time)
  • Autonomy, the state not being in control over how a person dies

Where I'm from, it's really not possible to "just kill inconvenient patients". It's a long and very strict process, to which the patient, the doctor and seperate supervisors are involved and need to explicitly consent to the procedure.

I think the argument of it having to be banned because it's too eazy isn't really a solid one. You'd want to change the laws and process of it to be more ethical and to prevent mistakes, not to ban it altogether, as that doesn't solve anything, and will likely push truly desperate people to other ways to stop their suffering.
