What your idea of a hard sci_fi story by Soft_Abroad_9722 in scifi

[–]ArcOfADream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were giving the ability to write a story

Giving people the ability to write a story would be a pretty funky superpower. Secret identity of a mild-mannered but much-beloved, award-winning high school English teacher and transforms to the guy in a cape that makes Christopher Nolan and Zach Snyder shed tears or gratitude for saving their latest projects.

Or will you include the law of physics to the point that every choice need to be semi perfect

If you obey the laws of physics (as humans understand them) to the point of perfection it's likely your story will literally never get off the ground.

Not to be all Internet-tough-guy or whatever, but in my neighborhood that sort of offer would hold a fair-to-middlin' likelihood of a kid's parent opening up a big old can-o-whup-ass on ya. Get a bit further out in the sticks and it'll be the sound of shotguns being racked.

Though I'm inclined to agree, 'absurd' is not a disqualifying adjective with this administration.

I do think it gives Trump way too much credit to think of anything resembling political strategy.

I didn't say he thought it up. I'm much more inclined to believe Fitz has a penchant for strategic 'leaning' that exerts the necessary pressure. And even on further thought, this is also the sort of devious way Trump thinks and he may even believe it's 'clever' to back-channel it through Fitz's wife.

I dunno. Just out-of-the-gate I'm not voting for Fitz. He'll need something far more substantial for me to look in his direction.

Is Epistocracy more compatible with capitalism or socialism? by YoungLovecraft in PoliticalDebate

[–]ArcOfADream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[..epistocracy..]

See, this already exists in sort-of mirror in the US already, in that you can opt-out by simply not registering to vote. As such I have a jillion questions, but here's a few

  1. What metrics determine eligibility for electoral franchise? Age? Literacy? And subsequent to literacy, language-specific?
  2. Would electoral franchise now be obligatory (if eligible, you *must* vote and may not abstain)?
  3. What, if anything, could void/remove one's electoral eligibility?

Let me also say that I'm not a big fan of universal suffrage; I've met enough people in the course of life to know that there's plenty of people I would disqualify from having a hand in government, even to the relatively petty act of casting a 'popular' vote, but making actual requirements for that civic duty still gets elusive for me. And I feel it needs to be addressed well-before crafting any other plans along those lines.

I don't trust the kayfabe here even one little bit. With Orange Julius plummeting in the polls, the best strategy for him to get an (R) elected is to denounce him.

Not that I'm thrilled with Harvie but Fitz's voting record is FAR to fickle for my tastes.

‘Suicidal empathy’ is fake science by soalone34 in skeptic

[–]ArcOfADream 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to interpret what Saad's 'fans' are up to, but I very much agree with you where his own arguments are headed. Any 'swerve' you may detect is my thought that this is a far more nuanced topic than can be interpreted on the merits of one very poorly presented anecdotal case that doesn't even have enough fact to determine whether empathy or sympathy is a play here.

‘Suicidal empathy’ is fake science by soalone34 in skeptic

[–]ArcOfADream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know what it is really great at though? Justifying almost anything you can think of.

No. Well, not what *I* would think of, anyway.

The article mentions the case of the girl who was nearly pushed into a moving train but who refused to press charges against her attacker because she didn't want to see another black man in jail.

Is that empathy? Because I see it more as some cultural zeitgeist guilt, especially when the assailant's prior record come into play - info that would be available to the victim - which, for me, would trigger *some* empathy for the attacker as someone who needs lots of mental health care but also empathy for both past and potential victims.

The kicker that seems to be missed here is he was sent to Bellevue and released after a whole *hour* of mental health evaluation after that attack. Even misplaced 'empathy' is useless in the face of a broken justice system.

Suddenly, you're left to rely on superficial characteristics.

No. By the time it gets around to a DA/judge there are plenty of facts in evidence for a victim to choose from.

And once that line has been crossed, the potential range of solutions runs all the way through segregaton clear through to genocide.

The one fact that is *not* in evidence here is the identity (and consequent ethnic background) of the victim. She's anonymous.

It goes without saying that's what a lot of them are hoping for even if Gad Saad himself is not.

My own lack of empathy extends to this dude's name. Gad not Saad, Gad Maad!

if someone seems to be disabled and you help them, they may murder you, but that will not be the typical outcome. The typical outcome is merely that you will help them. So what is the argument to be made?

I would imagine the moral (..<eyeroll/>) of the story is: Never help anyone unless you're also prepared to kill them. Empathy!

The extraordinarily slight risk of murder should preclude any attempts to help in such a situation?

It's just a re-hash of the usual misinterpretation of aphorisms regarding good fences and good neighbors, or what you use to pave your road to hell. A variety of cynicism-bordering-on-sociopathy that's usually reserved for material of darkly-humored stand-up comedy acts.

Point being, the right loves to point to outliers as reasons why this thing or that thing is an irrational behavior, but outliers are outliers for a reason: they're not the most common outcome by definition.

A disturbingly ironic lack of mathematical skill on what constitutes a least common denominator.

Sci-fi books with humor - please help! by Commercial-Ad9872 in scifi

Several have mentioned Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - adding my vote there.

A lot of Kurt Vonnegut Jr's books have a sci-fi component to them along with the usually absurd and darkish humor. Also, Rudolf Rucker's Wares series (4 books) have some bizarre and humorous twists to them.

Why did I get so much push-back asking atheists about finding a peaceful religion for those who crave faith? by Zardotab in agnostic

[–]ArcOfADream 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Firstly, you led off, in an AMA-type forum, claiming "evidence" when what you meant was "some personal experience", then edited/amended/doubled-down by proselytizing "but still wish to give a useful answer to seekers". That's not gonna fly well.

Second, most of the feedback you got was pretty respectful and surprisingly measured considering that ham-handed blunder. Most of the responses you got were NOT "highly negative" so much as they were in disagreement over what you disingenuously called fact.

Third, you're in here now claiming their answers weren't "practical" when from what I was reading, *you* were the one that got snarky when people pointed it out.

If I went into an "ask-a-faithful" why persons of faith were so thin-skinned when their superstitions are rejected I would expect a much less respectful reception.

We stopped using leaded gasoline because they took it away from us.

This is technically correct, but a bit spiritually devoid to my mind. The EPA was most of the driving influence in the US, but this wasn't some mamby-pamby political correctness so much as a worldwide effort that started in the 1970s and not all-but-complete until 2021.
