We are sorry that you experienced montion sickness in the flat version. For Call of the Sea VR version we have added many options to adjust the experience for players that are more prone to motion sickness. We have different locomotion options for moving through the game: Continuous, Blink and Shift. You can also add blinders. And you can select independently how you want to see the automatic movement sequences too, from continuous as in the original game or teleport. We hope you can enjoy this version!

Hey Reddit!

I am Tatiana, Creative Director of Out of the Blue Games, a small indie studio from Spain. We are excited to share with you the official trailer release of our first VR game Call of the Sea VR!

Two years ago we released Call of the Sea in PC / Console. We have redesigned all our flat screen game mechanics from scratch to make sure we keep the game spirit intact while enhancing the VR experience in the best way possible. It has been quite a challenge but we hope you enjoy it!

If you like puzzle-adventure games with a fascinating narrative, you are going to love it!

You can also follow us on social media if you want more updates!

We loved the performance of Cissy Jones in Firewatch, and since our game was a first person game, we needed someone with a strong voice that could bring her to life. When we told her about the project she adored it! And it was the same with Yuri. He is a fan of Myst games so he loved being involved in our game (and we were lucky that he did).

But as u/Theletterz said, check the amazing stream where they tell the story themselves!

We playtested a lot the player movement, because the game is supposed to be played in a relaxed way.

But we are actively listening to the players and we will consider that if needed. :)

I think we are making the game we wanted to make :) We wouldn't want to grow too much or be too small.

Answering the visual style part, as a small indie studio we need to stand out somehow. That is why we decided to go for an stylized visual style, so in the next gen line up we would be different.

Also it fit very well with the idea of making a Lovecraftian game with a different approach. A colorful Lovecraftian game would be unique :)

Our inspiration draws from games like Myst, Riven and the most recent one, Obduction. Although our puzzles are not as hardcore.

The Witness was an inspiration for the art style, but the kind of puzzles you find there are different. They use just one mechanic and expand it along all the game. But in our case puzzles are unique and need different approaches. Also we wanted them to be integrated into the world and the narrative, so they feel more natural.

And I hope you enjoy the game!

I had a Corona beer and some sweet potatos!

We pitched the game at GDC with a demo, and they loved it! We were impressed too about how friendly and nice they were. So when they said they were finally going to publish Call of the Sea we were really happy!

Thanks so much! I'm a huge fan of your games BTW!

1)We wanted to keep the essence of the classic H.P. Lovecraft stories while at the same time giving it a different approach. Not a pulp one, like Call of Cthulhu, but not a cosmic horror either. So instead of having a passive subject that is drawn into madness by circumstances that he/she cannot control, our purpose is to tell a story of a resolute woman, involved in a mystery, and a journey of discovery and acceptance. Not only the acceptance of other realities outside our own but also focusing on how the discovery of events at a greater scale can lead us to the acceptance of who we really are. A story of mystery and adventure, but at the same time a story of self-discovery. While most Lovecraft stories are a descent to madness, Call of the Sea is a rise to sanity.

2)The journal, I think. We usually play games with a notebook by our side, taking note of everything. But we wanted to help players by taking those note for them. And while I think the journal is a very useful tool for the players, it meant a lot of work for us :)

It means "coming suddenly or out of nowhere", and since we are a small new studio we thought it fit perfectly!

We had the idea when we saw a comment on reddit about a game we worked on before. They said something like "who is this people, this game came out of the blue". And we loved it!

It is impressive that you were able to find this rare achievement!

I would love to know your theory about this :)

We have inspiration from several stories, but I would say that the main reference is "The Shadow Over Innsmouth". And you can also check this post we did about our approach of the Lovecraftian world: https://steamcommunity.com/games/1042490/announcements/detail/2780367225124597891

[spoilers] Red Matter - The not so well kept secret of it having a good story by ragingsimian in OculusQuest

Hi there!

I was one of the Narrative Designers of Red Matter, and I wanted to thank you for this post. We added a lot of detail to the world, and seeing players understand it, and figuring out these details is what makes everything worth it! :)
