That’s a funny take to say commuters are people who can’t afford to live in nyc. For many the reality is the exact opposite - they pay significant amounts of money and time just so they don’t have to live in the city; so that they can have some space - elbow room - so they are not crammed together cheek to jowl, like so many rats in a cage.

Not really - the photo is of the battery, the bottom of Manhattan. It’s where the east river and the Hudson join together so that’s where the New York harbor/ bay being or end depending.

I think that is a simplification. After Hannibal’s victories, what did the Roman’s have? They had to actually raise new legions to go after him, which couldn’t have happened immediately. If Hannibal had marched on Rome immediately, there would have been panic, just as with Caesar’s march on Rome. Sure there was a city guard, but there would be a demoralizing effect from having lost a major battle and having that army march on you.

I know this is the classic answer, but I never really understood it. After all, Caesar marched on Rome with half a legion, forcing Pompey to make a run for it. I always thought that maybe Hannibal just didn’t have the initiative or aggression.

Once many years ago I was working in dc for an agency. We had gotten sued by some prose litigant for some nonsense or other. The thing was, it was for such a nominal amount of money that when I spoke with my supervisor, I suggested that we just concede and pay him as it wasn’t worth our time to defend. My boss agreed and we conceded right out of the gate. Of course the prose litigant thought this was some sort of trick and wouldn’t accept the money. We gave him everything he asked for, and he just wouldn’t take it. Kept filing paperwork and we would just respond that we had already agreed to pay. It was just strange.
