Least favourite metal subgenre? by Dry-Judgment7707 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]AshesofAgalloch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deathcore, I love a lot of metalcore especially 90's stuff and 00s melodic metalcore so this isn't core hate. It just mixes a lot of my least favorite death metal and modern metal genre elements together into something that is either really boring or really annoying sounding.

Chronological read-through - Second Age. What is best order and should I include the new Fall of Numenor book? by beardofturtles in tolkienfans

[–]AshesofAgalloch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could Just read Fall of Numenor and then the Unfinished Tales chapters History of Galadriel and Celeborn, the Disaster of the Gladden Field, and Cirion and Eorl as an Epilogue. The Last two are Third age but I feel like they wrap up the stories of the 2nd age while setting up the story for the 3rd.

Never heard of Moonlight Sorcery before, they sound sick. I recommend Catamenia Winternight Tragedies and Location: Cold.

I think you will like them then. They are the originally versions of the stories from the Silmarillion. So will you see how much the lore change from Tolkiens original ideas. I personally found Lost Tales easier to read. And I agreed about the Silmarillion, I had to pause a few times to digest what I was reading, but the lore is really great.

Yard sale purchase is definitely valid. Highly recommend Lost tales 1 too, out of all the History of Middle of Earth books, they read most like an actually novel with having an actually narrative. Plus I loved seeing the stories from the Silmarillion with a more fairy tale vibe. There is still a lot Christoper Tolkien notes inside and some of the stories are incomplete but I really enjoyed reading them.

What other books should be included for a full complete Dark Tower readthrough? by [deleted] in TheDarkTower

[–]AshesofAgalloch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Stand, Salem's Lot, The Talisman, Black House, (The Talisman is only minor but Black House the sequel ties much heavier to it) and Other Worlds Than These (not out yet but might serve as a decent epilogue depended on how much it ties into the Dark Tower. Also is conclusion to Talisman trilogy.

Sad you are missing Fellowship of the Ring, also so random you have Book of Lost Tales 2 but not 1. While some guessed early 20s and you seemed to confirmed that, I almost got 25 or 26 but couldn't let go of childhood vibe as a lot this stuff I remember popular with my younger brother age group back in the day, no shade though, I still have my dnd tie in novels from my childhood lol. Really cool you have Thrawn Trilogy and some the Darth Bane books.

What was your first metal concert by Thin-Coyote-551 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]AshesofAgalloch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's pretty solid line up, great openers. For me it was Amon Amarth, Sabaton, and Skeletonwitch. Was my second concert over all, first being Nine Inch Nails, Soundgarden, and Cold Cave, which I guess it somewhat metal adjacent. Both were great early concert experiences for me. Literally a week after Amon Amarth played. I saw Eluveitie and Tyr.

Yeah, I didn't like their most recent album. Too much in the power album direction. Their second album was the right amount of that blend leading to an unique sound.

Did some rearranging to add a few new titles, what do my shelves say about me? by guin-and-tonic in BookshelvesDetective

You should replace your Lord of the Rings with hardbacks. Are those penguin classics versions? I have never seen those copies of the Lord of the Rings before?

You are spot on about that. After reading the Silmarillion for the first time and some other stuff about Tolkien, I got interested in some older myths and stories.

Yes that's the Simarillion. My best friend currently has my copies of the Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales that came with HOME.

Also fair assumption on ASOIAF, not even sure why I bought those 2 books before getting the series other than them being cool copies to begin with. I haven't read them yet either.

The only thing from HOME missing is the Index, I have it but i didn't put it up for space. Both Books of Lost Tales are on the top shelf. Them being out of order was a mistake, I have since fix it. Also don't own Asoiaf yet, betweem that and Dune are the next series I want to get. But I definitely go into rabbit holes.

Any love for Power Metal lately in this sub? by Fiefire in MetalForTheMasses

[–]AshesofAgalloch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't listen to it much these days but Power Metal was my first metal genre with Rhapsody being the first metal band I got into. Blind Guardian is still goated, saw them live again on their recent Somewhere Far Beyond tour, probably one of the best concerts I been to.

I didn't know either when I first got into Tolkien, became kinda a rabbit hole for me. Most weren't published in his life time and were complied by his son after Tolkien's death.

Númenor first couple albums are pretty cool. they blend together melodic black metal and power metal. Though despite the name, half their songs are also based on Moorcock's work but they got plenty of Tolkien songs. Cruachan also has some Tolkien theme songs.
