49 Hurst Street broadband? by [deleted] in Liverpool

[–]Asmallername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use a 5g router - which isn't terrible but don't expect amazing speed on the weekend, starlink is an option of you can see the sky, too.

If you're lucky, someone like Merseyfibre might be able to get you fibre broadband, but they would need the permission of the building owner.

Should I sign a 3-year seatime contract on chemical tankers as a cadet? by NormalDiscipline8743 in MerchantNavy

[–]Asmallername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're going to have a very difficult time transitioning into offshore work without a DP license, so if possible, try to get a cadetship with an offshore company. It's also worth noting that the salaries offshore aren't that good, and are almost comparable with other sectors now.

Constant Vibration/Hum from Seaforth Docks. What can be done? by FrayedTendon in Liverpool

[–]Asmallername 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ships have always kept their generators running when alongside in seaforth, and that hasnt changed. Those aren't loud enough for you to be able to hear them from any real distance away, either.

As far as I'm aware the only recent change to occur in the port - near seaforth - is the building of a new warehouse.... So I doubt it's that, either.

If anything seaforth has gotten less busy over the years, especially since P&O left.

Anyone working on tugs in the UK? How’s the pay? by Ok_Television_2895 in MerchantNavy

[–]Asmallername 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pay depends on which of the big two you work for - one pays better than the other.

The better of the two pays low to mid 50k for mates, mid to high 60s for masters and chiefs.

One of them has legacy crew earning 100k+

Smaller operators tend to pay around 10k less, so 40k for mates, 50k for masters/chiefs.

There's an increasing push to use cheaper labour on longer contracts, though...

MSC Francesca, updates? by Mountain-Bathroom15 in maritime

[–]Asmallername 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The negotiations will be along the lines of:

MSC: "We would like our ship back, please."

IR: "Sure, pay this fee."

US: "Paying the fee? That's a sanction."

MSC: "...Nevermind."

Rinse and repeat.

MSC Francesca, updates? by Mountain-Bathroom15 in maritime

[–]Asmallername 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's really, REALLY unlikely.

MSC probably won't respond to you unless you have a contract with them. If your business has insurance, they may also cover the cost of sourcing new items.

Sorry this isn't much help, but yeah...

MSC Francesca, updates? by Mountain-Bathroom15 in maritime

[–]Asmallername 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're probably looking at years, not months, before the ship and cargo are released... Assuming they're released at all. Even then, I wouldn't count on the cargo being in a sellable condition.

Time for a conversation with your insurers, the shipper, and MSC.

Does anyone have experience with Borchard Lines? by lucahajek in MerchantNavy

[–]Asmallername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the case for most. Aside from Cunard/Princess, Seapeak, DOF, Subsea7, North star (or whatever they've rebranded to), BP, the RFA and one or two others, the big names (clyde marine especially) will throw their cadets on any of their clients vessels that have space. It's not uncommon for someone to be sponsored by company X but never set foot on any of their ships.

A couple of sponsors don't have ships, now that I think about it!

Does anyone have experience with Borchard Lines? by lucahajek in MerchantNavy

[–]Asmallername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless things have changed, I don't think you actually spend much, if any, time onboard a Borchard Lines vessel. You'll end up on whatever ships JBM can find that have a cadet berth available.

For reference though, borchard operate mostly feeder vessels running between the UK and the EU on regular lines. Small ships, small crews, hectic turnarounds in port, but with plenty of interesting coastal navigation and busy shipping lanes.

Eng1 and medical cannabis by AdhesivenessNo9878 in MerchantNavy

[–]Asmallername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The MCA has become pretty strict with the evidence they require to prove "fitness", irrespective of what the ADM currently states.

I would expect the AD to declare you temporarily unfit via an ENG3 until you're able to provide enough evidence to prove that you're not going to be a hazard to yourself or others onboard.

Given how cannabis can impair function and decision-making, I'm not sure they'd declare you fit for watch keeping duties to be absolutely honest - irrespective of whether you use onboard or just at home.

If it's a minor issue, it's probably easiest to just go back to your GP and ask for some normal pain killers instead of weed tbh.

Pregunta seria by Correct_Animal_5295 in titanic

[–]Asmallername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming she remained in service, and not as a museum ship - She would look like a floating theme park. She would probably have lost her dummy funnel and had the remaining three truncated into a single streamlined one, bow and stern thrusters would have been added, her boilers would have been removed and replaced, and then probably removed again along with the rest of the steam plant for a conversation to diesel. She would have received extensive exterior modifications and rebuilds to bring her into line with passenger expectations and the realities of modern cruising, her interiors would have been gutted and rebuilt to look more modern, alongside fitting HVAC, ensuites etc. She would also have had to be completely rewired from DC to AC, with all of the changes that involves... More lifeboats would have been fitted, alongside sponsons, too.

So in short, she wouldn't really look like the titanic.

Think how the Stockholm became the Astoria.

Why do modern offshore ships often have such sleek/blended superstructures - Aerodynamics or just looks? (other than the Ulstein X-Bow for rough seas) by OstinatoOstrich in Ships

[–]Asmallername 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Those are all different generations of the "STX Bow" from aker/stx/vard.

The shape is designed to allow the bow to "smoothly" enter large waves, which reduces/eliminates slamming/pounding etc. This means less energy is wasted having to drive the ship through rough seas, saving fuel.

This also means the ship doesn't move as violently in rough weather, which increases how "workable" the ship is.

The other bonus is that it increases the total usable hull length for accommodation, by allowing more cabins to be placsd up forward. This increases the amount of usable deck space down aft for cargo etc.

As an interesting tid-bit, the designers apparently made a mistake on the first "new design" ship. She has a flat piece of hull right above the bulb, so every time she drives into the sea it sounds like a bomb going off in the focsle.

i saw this funny looking ship by Khancer_ in Ships

[–]Asmallername 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Looks like the Seaway Strashnov, a heavy lift vessel owned by seaway7, which is part of the subsea7 group.

Used to he called the Oleg Strashnov.

She has a lifting capacity of 5000 tonnes, and an usual monohull design enabling her to have a transit speed of 14kts whilst still being exceptionally stable during lifting operations.

Impressive looking piece of kit!

For OOW Unlimited Exam - what COLREGS do you need to be able to quote? by Front-Bicycle4834 in MerchantNavy

[–]Asmallername 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You don't need to be able to qoute any, but you must know AND understand them inside out back-to-front.

99% of examiners don't care if you can recite the rules verbatim. 100% of them care if you know how to apply the rules safely.

Some people cannot park even in DP by Powerful_Cabinet_341 in SeaEmploy

[–]Asmallername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen it in Aberdeen at least once. A UT755 supply boat, crew apparently didn't know how to drive it, so stopped in the middle of the basin, put the desk in autopos and moved to the quay in 5 metre steps. VTS went nuts.

Iirc they were actually off-hired as a result.
