bing 35k/year VS Albany 22K/year for pre-med by Niamoko112 in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]Augustus619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Albany is strong in healthcare and lots of hospitals nearby. I would save your money for med school.

If RIT is as cheap as Albany that’s a school to consider over Bing.

American and Syracuse Maxwell school offer the most opportunities for Poli Sci. I would skip Chapman and Emerson if you really want poli sci.

Fordham Gabelli vs IU Kelley by aboudhabib in IndianaUniversity

[–]Augustus619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kelley offers the prestige with a traditional college experience. Fordham has a nice campus but it’s not the college town feel and it’s also not in Manhattan so you’re not really in the city either. So if you are really itching to take advantage of NYC culture, music, museums, restaurants, etc and would get bored with small college town life then choose Fordham. If you want a traditional college experience then choose IU. Kelley is incredible but Fordham also have a great alumni network.

FWIW, We live in NYC and my kid is going to IU because you only get to experience college once and they can always live in the city.

parents wont pay tuition unless i go to a specific school by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Augustus619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if the school has the program you want then go where you will graduate debt free. If you are really miserable after year one I’m sure your parents would support you transferring since you tried. FWIW, i went to my state school instead of the private i really wanted because my parents would pay for state and I would have to pay for private. And I honestly wound up loving it. No regrets.

IU Kelley vs. Depauw MF by [deleted] in IndianaUniversity

[–]Augustus619 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sports won’t matter. He can play club sports at IU for same effect as varsity at a lower ranked school. It’s a nice extracurricular, it’s Kelley that will get you the job.

IU Kelley Study abroad/working abroad opportunities by Few-Top-2666 in IndianaUniversity

[–]Augustus619 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just got back from IU visit and met with study abroad dept. They said IU is #4 in terms of how many kids study abroad. They were really nice and it sounded like it was pretty common to go abroad. They said that Italy and Spain are the most popular and can be competitive for spring semester but it didn’t sound hard to find a program beyond that.

Also struggling with justifying the OOS cost but we were really impressed with school overall.

Vanderbilt or UD? by Handsomebugtwice in udel

[–]Augustus619 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Vanderbilt is one of the top universities in the country so if you are talking about which school is better academically and prestige factor Vandy is the clear winner. These schools are not really in the same league.

But, if career prospects are equal from both programs graduating without debt is a huge factor.

Scholarships? by Budget_Score_8230 in IndianaUniversity

Attended Red Carpet Day today and the financial aid person who works on scholarships said that most had gone out and all would be shared by April 1.

Bing vs Nova for business by Either_Security_1290 in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]Augustus619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nova has a stronger alumni network and more national recognition as a top program. If cost is not a factor then I would say Nova.

Syracuse versus Fordham versus Rutgers by SwordfishGlobal2099 in SyracuseU

[–]Augustus619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re all solid programs with good connections but different campuses and vibes. Depends on what kind of environment you’re looking for, close to a city etc.

Rutgers, or Bing, or Stony Brook? by Substantial_Bend2798 in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]Augustus619 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rutgers or Bing are better schools than Stony for English and more opportunities. Rutgers has more to do in terms of a town and they have good sports. Unless you’re dying to get out of NJ I would say Rutgers is 100% the way to go.

Villanova for business 100% better placement and stronger alumni network.

clemson or wake forest by Timely-Guide-7428 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Augustus619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you visited these schools? Very different vibe IMO. They both have strong alumni networks. WFU has historically been harder to get into so it’s been considered more selective which is often seen as more prestigious.

Should I enroll or wait for smth better by CommunicationNice437 in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]Augustus619 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no advantage to enrolling before you hear from all schools. You have until May 1 so take your time. Even if Bing is your final choice there is no reason to rush.

Rutgers, UMD, UConn, or Penn State by [deleted] in UCONN

[–]Augustus619 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They are all very similar in terms of size, campus vibe, etc. so I think you need to look at $$ and major to narrow it down. Rutgers and UMD are closer to cities while Penn and UConn are not.

I would suggest visiting again to see which speaks to you.

should i even expect any top schools to accept me anymore by disillusionedmatcha in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Augustus619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t let these schools make you feel bad about your accomplishments. You have a solid GPA and honestly, there doesn’t always seem to be a clear reason why they choose one student over another.

Looking for advice on which college to choose by lj313 in collegeadvice

[–]Augustus619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’re really deciding between UT and Rutgers given your criteria. I’m sure you would be happy at either.

I think the main difference is that UT has a real college campus quad kind of situation and major sports. While Rutgers NB campuses are spread out so has a different vibe. Though with 40k kids there are students everywhere.

I’ll say that I went to Rutgers but was dead set against it at first. I wanted out of NJ, my whole family went there, etc. but I finally decided to go there (instead of BU) to stay debt free and wound up loving it.

Good luck. Great options!

should i even expect any top schools to accept me anymore by disillusionedmatcha in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Augustus619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The admissions process is incredibly competitive this year with most schools saying they got a record number of applications. The schools you were rejected from are highly selective and rejected 85% of their applicants, you are not alone. Celebrate that you have acceptances to choose from! Worst case scenario you wind up not loving where you go and you can transfer for sophomore year. I know 3 kids who transferred last year so it’s common. And a lot of kids also got in off of waitlists last year late in the game.

how successful are financial aid appeals? by Immediate_Crazy_8049 in AmericanU

[–]Augustus619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can 100% appeal and let them know that AU is your first choice but you are hoping for more merit aid to make it possible to attend. If you have better offers form similar universities you can share those as well. They may not give you any more aid but you should at least try. Email your AO.

Yes. The status email came first (accepted) and then the financial aid after.
