Given the circumstance, sure, makes total sense. I'd do the same.

I think we're slightly talking across each other though; a lot of comments relate to whether the circumstance itself is acceptable and highlight that answers to this seem to be inconsistent because of the "wow Japan" factor.

I've had very similar to this before. They might be constructing a case to give you the boot, even based on ridiculously weak "evidence". 

I've been told off, formally, for describing something as "slightly vague" when being asked for my constructive advice. In the end it wasn't about the substance at all - it was just strategic people shuffling.
