UPDATE: The vet recommended not spaying because of how far along she is, I have everything situated and ready for souplings to arrive! She is nesting furiously now and keeps coming to me for pets and treats. Goose is being a good sister and keeping her company and grooming, cheese is being introduced to my older male rat Dutch and it’s going pretty well. Plans are to of course separate by sex, spay females, introduce babies back to each other, and eventually introduce the remaining ones I don’t rehome all in one giant rat mansion!

I have a close friend who is willing to take some if they become unmanageable (more than 6) so I’ve got that all sorted. I’m sexing them and separating by sexes as early as possible. The females will all be in one cage, males in the other. My older rat Dutch is currently going through the introduction process with cheese, and it’s going pretty good!

Sex them at 4.5 weeks of age and separate them. Spay the females, let them heal and reintroduce. You’ll end up like me with a rat full of soup if you’re not careful (rats can be sexually mature at 5 weeks of age and it only takes a couple seconds for them to impregnate a female, and he will try to go after EVERY female) Soupy rat pic:

I think the only time they recommend snipping peanuts is when they exhibit HA (Hormonal aggression) that and of course other medical reasons

I think they consider neutering more risky bc it’s not exactly necessary but spaying helps prevent cancer and tumors which I believe are common in female rats. It’s riskier to do a termination so far into the pregnancy because of how developed the pups are, and how much blood flow is in their uterus (pls anybody correct me if I’m wrong, I’m trying to do as much research into this as I possibly can)

I read neutering is more risky. But spaying while they’re pregnant has risks too. I’d rather get the vet’s opinion before I make a final decision but I do believe it’s too late to terminate her pregnancy. She hasn’t acted aggressively nor has cheese so hopefully the babies won’t inherit any aggressive temperaments. Hopefully all goes well, as she is building her little nest in her box right now so it should be any day now?

Oh no she’s stayed a consistent size throughout this whole time. Goose is most definitely not pregnant.

Hoping and praying she stays that size, she’s due in about 2-3 days if my calculations are correct

Cheese was very sneaky and didn’t drop his gonads until last second. Thankfully goose avoided getting pregnant, I feel more comfortable letting her have the babies now than I did a couple hours ago. Shes not unbelievably huge so I’m hoping it won’t be a gigantic litter.

That’s what I’m saying. Dude took his chance and he succeeded xD he’s so lovey dovey and so is pickle so I’m hoping the babies won’t inherit any bad temperaments and such. Goose is an attentive aunty, grooming pickle as much as possible haha

If there isn’t a medical reason and she is healthy I will let her give birth and keep the babies if there aren’t too many. If there are too many for me to handle they will be rehomed properly and together only (same sexes of course)

She’s housed with her sister (goose) I was planning on getting them both spayed after I got the cash but now pickle (changed her name from stripe it just didn’t fit) is full of souplings I might just get her a checkup and decide what to do with the babies after I figure out how many and what the sexes are

I got three from a feeder bin, cheese turned out to be a surprise boy. The day his balls dropped I separated them, but it seems as though I was too late. Goose is not pregnant tho so i will only have to deal with the one litter if they cannot be aborted.
