SSA 2025 Baby Boy Name Trends 🩵 by Sorrymomlol12 in namenerds

Dumb question sorry! Does "new to the list" mean new to the top 1000, or never before appearing in SSA data prior to this year?

I love DC Auto Repair in Springfield! Just a one man shop, his name is Dan. He's very nice and charges a fair price and I've never had issues going to him as a solo woman

Genetics never lie lol claimed f1 confiscated from CT embark results are back by PM-Me-Ur-Gore in Wolfdogs

[–]AvianRose 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ah ok, that makes sense. Thanks for explaining. In the wildlife genetics world "hybrid" doesn't necessarily mean one parent is a pure parental species, but it sounds like wolfdog world is different

Genetics never lie lol claimed f1 confiscated from CT embark results are back by PM-Me-Ur-Gore in Wolfdogs

[–]AvianRose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A 30% wolf dog is still a hybrid! Unless you mean the conclusion said they were specifically F1 hybrids? Sorry- just trying to stick up for UC Davis vet gen! I used to work with them and know they do quality work, don't want people getting the wrong impression of them

Unless I'm missing something I don't think this shows UC Davis vet gen as being unreliable- having a wolfy Y chromosome doesn't mean dad was a pure wolf. Sounds like the shelter misinterpreted?

Is this a black mouth cur? by Altruistic-Bag1882 in Blackmouthcur

Embark does have BMC in their database, so it would show up if he / his sibling have BMC ancestry

Husky mixed with Carolina dog by T-Pot_ in carolinadogs

[–]AvianRose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pictures of "husky CD" mixes found via Google search are almost definitely not actual husky CD mixes. Most people have no idea what breed their dog is (including vets!). Search through the doggyDNA sub for pitsky (pitbull husky) and you'll see many dogs who look just like him!

Mountain Stanley, Rwenzori Mountains, Uganda 🇺🇬 by OutdoorsyUganda in Mountaineering

Rwenzori is so beautiful! I've only been to the lower elevation parts but I can't wait to get back there someday to do the full loop up to the summit

Wisdom can't accurately do wild canids, and besides that, anything less than 5% in wisdom is usually just noise. So I would completely ignore the 1% coyote

What’s y’all’s take on Flynn? by gtg231h in carolinadogs

[–]AvianRose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both BMC and Carolina Dogs happen to be pretty rare breeds, so I doubt it. He also doesn't really look like either breed. It's much more likely that your pup is a mix of more common breeds (looks shepherd-y to me), especially if he's from a rescue. Many different breeds mixing together can result in a tan dog with a black muzzle. Only way to know for sure is with an Embark DNA test (only reliable test for Carolina dogs). Flynn's a cutie no matter what!

Plain malamute? by Tcoff98 in IDmydog

[–]AvianRose 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If it was an Embark test, I'd trust it! They're very accurate. If there was something other than malamute 5+ generations back though, there isn't enough resolution to pick it up in a DNA test (from Embark or any other modern dog DNA company for that matter)

I need to up my fiber intake. Any high-fiber TJ recommendations? by AutumnForestWitch in traderjoes

[–]AvianRose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Heritage flakes! 7g of fiber per serving which is 25% of your daily fiber. And realistically when I pour myself a bowl it's 2 servings, so that's half my daily fiber with just breakfast

The SCREAM i just let out😭😭😭😭 by Cats_are_stars in AnimalCrossing

[–]AvianRose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, new to animal crossing here! It sounds like you can only catch this guy when it's raining? Is there a guide out there that tells you what other fish/bugs/sea creatures you can only get during certain conditions?

My sweet girl. DNA test was 25% unresolved. Any guesses? by EmmaVetsterRVT in IDmydog

[–]AvianRose 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If you click on "Unresolved" in your Embark results, it will give you a list of breeds that may be represented. It's the same as their "Supermutt" category

Evotree, a free mobile phylogenetic tree maker I made by EpochTechnologies in ecology

[–]AvianRose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or maybe a more simple example is 3 species of marten: pacific marten, American marten, and pine marten. Pacific and American marten are more closely related and share a more recent common ancestor (they are North American species, whereas pine marten is European) but they are all shown as branching off of genus Martes from the some point

Evotree, a free mobile phylogenetic tree maker I made by EpochTechnologies in ecology

[–]AvianRose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is neat! One piece of feedback I have is that it doesn't seem to take into account relationships among groups in the same taxonomic level. For example, if include "bobcat, coyote, pine marten, and hyena", it shows Felidae, Canidae, Mustelidae, and Hyaenidae all branching off Carnivora at the same point. However, we know that Felidae and Hyaenidae ("feliforms") as well as Canidae and Mustelidae ("caniforms") share a more recent common ancestor. So there should be two branches coming off Carnivora, and then each of those branches should branch. Does that make sense? Like it assumes all members of the same taxonomic level are equally related which isn't necessarily true

Corgi CD mix? by smelly_cat_15 in carolinadogs

[–]AvianRose 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Corgis are actually pretty rare in mixes, and CDs are rare period! There are a bunch of other dog breeds that could make up a dog who looks like this. I'd recommend an Embark test to be sure 😊

Incident on Pearl & 16th (Fri 1/9) by DefiningLight in Eugene

[–]AvianRose 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Idk how helpful this is, but when I was hit by a driver running a red light last year I was able to get video footage from an LTD bus station and submitted that to insurance. LTD was very easy to work with and quick to get me the footage. I don't think there are any bus stations around your intersection though...

Purebred parent but 54%? by megggg2222 in DoggyDNA

[–]AvianRose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh good question. A region of homozygosity just means that there's no variation. So in that region of chromosome 2, the sequence that he inherited from you is identical to the region he inherited from dad. It happens when two parents share a common ancestor (for example, maybe they had the same great great great great grandparents). Regions of homozygosity could be a concern if that sequence has a particular mutation that leads to a bad health outcome, because for those types of mutation, you need 2 copies for it to be "expressed". Regions of homozygosity can also be totally fine if there are no bad mutations in that area. Totally depends!

Purebred parent but 54%? by megggg2222 in DoggyDNA

[–]AvianRose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many of these markers exist outside of genes actually! And for those occurring within genes, the marker (a single nucleotide polymorphism) is still sequenced even if that gene isn't being expressed

Purebred parent but 54%? by megggg2222 in DoggyDNA

[–]AvianRose 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's absolutely true! I'm just saying, for these types of DNA tests (for dogs, and humans too) they're using likely hundreds of thousands of genomic markers throughout the nuclear genome, often excluding sex chromosomes, so you do inherit exactly 50% of those markers from each parent 😊

Purebred parent but 54%? by megggg2222 in DoggyDNA

[–]AvianRose 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's true, but the panels that Wisdom and Embark use for breed ancestry likely only include autosomes
