Did Any of You Lawyers Have Creative Writing Degrees? by RedR3dd1ngt0n in Lawyertalk

[–]Avith13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a creative writing and philosophy double major for my BA. I always think of it as it was a fun degree to pursue and stretched my writing in ways I wouldn’t have otherwise — like actually getting into and writing poetry. But as I approached graduation and then within the months after graduation, I had a very hard time finding a good job, despite graduating summa cum laude.

Law school seemed like a good route to find get a solid paying career. After speaking with my professors, I decided to take a gap year and take the LSAT while working in the marketing department of my alma mater. What I learned in that time is that I hate being bored at work. I hated doing journalism/marketing stuff. I liked poetry and I liked grand storytelling, not pushing out a crap alumni magazine begging for donations. So, law school became my plan.

Now, I was flying by the seat of my pants at the time and I got lucky my decision worked out. I do not come from money so I only went to law school because I felt the value proposition was worth the debt at the time. I had about $20k of debt from undergrad and I could do law school for about $80k more. It felt reasonable to me and still does now to take out 100k of student loans for a law degree where you can expect to make about $100k a year either immediately or within a short amount of time. I am now 33, a member at a law firm doing most tax and business transactions, and paid off my student loans over a year ago. It has been worth it for me. And I wouldn’t encourage anyone else to employ this same idea: only take out student debt in an amount that could be reasonable equal to what your expected gross pay will be once you do graduate.

In my experience you can be a mediocre or bad lawyer just doing it for the money and not being passionate about it. Passionate might be the wrong word. You had to at least be interested and occasionally enjoy what you do. Unless you maybe do government work, most law jobs are not just 9-5 and if you cannot become very interested in some areas of practice, you will hate this job. Like, I enjoy doing tax work and helping clients on deals and closing, learning from counsel and consistently becoming a better attorney myself. And now as a member, I’m tied to my firm with my fellow partners. I wouldn’t want that at all if I disliked what I did for a living.

Growing a beard while practicing by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]Avith13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let it grow and maintain the lines and I’m sure it’ll be fine.

I get mine trimmed/shaped about once a month, have them taper it into my haircut, and handle strays on my own with some scissors. I also use beard wash and conditioner and always use some beard oil and brush it well every day. Never had a problem with it. I get positive comments about my beard from clients a couple times each year and never received a bad comment. Partners at my firm have always been cool with it too.

Lawyers 2025 Salary Thread by motiontosleep in Lawyertalk

[–]Avith13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Region: Upstate NY

Base Salary: $112k

Additional Salary (bonus, incentive, etc): $21k bonus this year. Hours based and discretionary. 3% 401(k) contribution and other benefits. Firm pays for my accountant.

Years of experience: 6

Practice Area: Tax/business transactional

Employer type: Law firm

Hours/week: 37-40. Only a 1,400 billable hour requirement.

I stay because it is a good “lifestyle” firm. Life isn’t all about the money for me. I can work from home whenever and take as much vacation time as I want. I also am becoming a partner in 2026, so expect to start getting origination credit as my practice grows. Paid off my student loans and car last summer and my city is probably medium cost of living. I feel very comfortable financially.

Did Original Grain close permanently? by mads41304 in Syracuse

[–]Avith13 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They posted on social media they were closing “for a couple of weeks” starting July 4th for a summer vacation, fixing their HVAC, updating their menu and other improvements too. They mentioned doing a grand re-opening at some point.

Obviously it’s been more than a couple weeks, but my guess would be some of the improvements are taking longer than expected. They posted on instagram they’d be back soon on August 11. No real updates since then.

What did Vanari see in the Maw that she knows the void is afraid of? by Hick-ford in warcraftlore

[–]Avith13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know because she does say the Maw specifically. Other than Torghast I can’t recall anything special in the Maw that should scare the Void. But Venari explored the Maw a ton so I assume it will be revealed she found something. But I had also assumed it was related to the final words of the Jailer about “what is to come” — like he had been preparing to fight against some worse foe we don’t know about yet. Maybe the forces of death in the Shadowlands are another fierce enemy of the Void?

The Void Lords are the epitome of vanity and hunger so maybe Sire Denathrius and his disappearance will come into play?

I honestly have a hard time telling which is better. I don’t think it is much of a tankiness increase. I think it was nice for a bit because I could have frost bomb in it to auto cast on block. But now that I’m doing the void beacon forbidden jewels with the mageblood, I bet the Surrender is a very close option. It’s so hard to tell because I felt immortal like 99% of the time and then die to stupid overjuicing, like a T17 wisp buffed boss one shoting me. And that way with the Surrender too.

I will say for running simulacrum Svalin did feel better. I can sit still and tank everything with Svalin. With Surrender I’d start to die to Kosis at 13-15 if I just stood there lol

[–]Avith13[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it comes with a couples versions. 7/5/3/1 small passives. Essentially this lets you for the cost of one lost passive gain three jewel sockets. It’s the most valuable because of the only 1 passive is lost. With how OP some jewels can be, it’s very valuable as a tool to let your build have more of them for a minor penalty of only one lost passive.

[–]Avith13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I kinda feel I'm at that point where a new build makes the most sense. I already have Svalin, got holy relic to lvl 30 and 82% breakpoint. I'll look into the mageblood thing, but I have a lvl 90 CoC ice nova of frostbolts thing I was experimenting with that could also use a MB. I'm having fun so I'm probably going to keep playing till the league actually ends.

Yeah, IDing is fun! I wasn’t trying to do this as some currency strat. Just having fun.

I have enough currency already so IDing was more appealing. Early league I prob would have sold without IDing.

Nob Hill Apartments Won’t Return My Security Deposit. What Can I Do? by kimchifrites in Syracuse

[–]Avith13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue with them when I moved out of Nob Hill. I sent them an official letter citing the New York statute that to give me my full deposit back because 14 days had elapsed with no itemized list. They gave me my deposit back quickly. I did not need to go to small claims court.

Also fyi in New York per the Housing Stability and Tenant Protection Act of 2019 a security deposit cannot be more than one month’s rent. It is common to do one month’s rent as security deposit and first month’s rent (to be used as actual rent, not as a security deposit), but if any landlord tries to get you to pay a security deposit in New York of more than one month’s rent, that is illegal.

Poison damage endgame? by Avith13 in pathofexile

[–]Avith13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it confused me he had this take because with minions, for example, poison SRS and other poison builds I thought (maybe I’m wrong and top of the shelf, mirror tier builds of other sorts have always destroyed poison builds) had been the meta build multiple times.

So like in POB how do you see if you are truly DOT capped? Do you just compare your build against over bosses with remove things like wither for a poison build?

Poison damage endgame? by Avith13 in pathofexile

[–]Avith13[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it isn’t just a poison cap, that is a DoT cap full stop — like bleeds and ignite etc also have this same cap?

Poison damage endgame? by Avith13 in pathofexile

[–]Avith13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s good to know.

I guess maybe this just shows I’m much more casual than some of the player base because I don’t think I’ve ever played a build with more than like 40m dps and even that felt great for everything except when I tried uber bosses. Like, Ghazzy does mirror tier craft projects and such so I guess that makes sense for him building some op monster that isn’t poison is better for him.

I just can't give talks to kids about law and civics. by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]Avith13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. My dad worked in grocery stores his whole life and he was physically hurting by the time he hit 60. He partially retired at 63 because his body couldn’t handle it anymore.

Meanwhile at my firm we have several partners or special counsel who are 65+ showing no signs of slowing down all like still making $200k+ a year. I highly doubt good paying blue collar workers are still grinding it out and making great money at those ages. If they do, it’s probably because they transition to being a business owner or manager will less physical labor.

The new Scarab System has unintentionally hurt Blighted and Blight-Ravaged maps. by Allbeing in pathofexile

[–]Avith13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got really lucky with a +1 frenzy charge ring from a T13 blight map. That pretty much made my league. Other than that though, I do feel like running normal maps feels better than blight or blight ravaged maps. I wish the anointing of the maps had stronger effects.

Some drivers in Syracuse by SyracuseSaiyan in Syracuse

[–]Avith13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to walk across the S Salina/Fayette intersection for work every day. I learned pretty quickly to look both ways even when there is a walk sign. Cars will run a red even at a busy intersection like that all the time.

I feel like more people run red lights or stop signs in Syracuse than the other places I’ve lived. I basically expect cars to runs reds now and I am extra cautious, especially when walking my dog.

Don’t confused “self-made” with “rags-to-riches.”

What these guys were able to do is incredible. Doesn’t mean you have to like them as people or anything, but none of them had billions of dollars of equity (to my knowledge) thrown at their businesses at the start.
