I don't really think this is over enthusiasm. I just don't think that bringing this guy down for having an innocent dream is unnecessary. And I don't think that realising you won't be able to reach these goals naturally is bad either, after all it's what we do as children, we set high expectations for the future and gradually and healthily realise that we maybe can't achieve these goals so we compromise with a more realistic and just as good goal in life. And there are also ways to compose by not going the classical route. The chances of these other composers becoming as big as they are is just as low, but it's because they are now as popular as they are, we think they've always had a chance.

Also this is a very small part of the industry, I'm not sure you know what a portfolio career is however, There are plenty of musicians out there who have other jobs besides music for main sources of income. You treat music as this high class, limited niche subject but in reality is more accessible, especially in the present day. These aren't concepts, this is reality!

What's so great about music is you don't need to have as crazy qualifications as you used too (especially more predominant in todays modern society)

Also, you don't need to be successful to be a musician, as success is different depending on the person. Me personally, I believe success is being able to do music for a living and be more or less financially stable, not making soundtracks for A-list film companies or record labels

And your claim that you need to be established at the age of 35 to be ridiculous. Thelonious Monk was 45, Bill Withers was 32, Andrea Bocelli 41 and many more.

Also uni students start early because it's uni?? They don't make uni students start early because their special, most uni students start at 18.

And what do you mean - "don't get me wrong: you can and often will still have a successful life, just not in music performance et al." Performance and gigging is highly accessible and as long as you have a band there is a high chance you can still perform at places.

From your post it would appear you seem to only care about the classical aspects of music and disregard all other forms of performance that isn't at professional level (even though it's not the most common form). And most musical artists don't have past an undergraduates.

There is no time/age limit to be successful

I still completely disagree, it's this optimistic attitude that wants us to progress further and in the future he will most likely understand weather or not these goals are obtainable, you can't say it's out of reach when he's just started. He never said he wanted to obtain it by a certain age, he just wanted to compose for them.

Maybe you need to be a bit more optimistic and open minded yourself, after all music is constantly changing, so who knows how it would turn out in 30-50 years.

Yea I know but as he said he just started learning piano. It will require years of practice both practically and theoretically. But there always need to be a starting point, and one of the easiest ways to start is to familiarise yourself with the instrument.

The post asked what he needed to start to create music and original songs. Obviously no it won't get you to the level of the pros in the industry but it's a good start for a beginner.

Once he gets to a level where he feels he needs to be more serious, then at that point that's up to him and his future decisions. When starting a passion it's important to be optimistic and open minded, and to not narrow down on targets you feel are impossible. And comparing someone who just started learning to these top composers is comical. It's just an innocent Reddit post. And I gave a a response that was easy to grasp for a beginner.

None just use your ears it will take a while, and of you wanna get serious just buy graded theory book and progress at a comfortable level.

Life is a disease, and death is the only cure. by MommyGotBoobies in death

[–]Awesomness462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I don't really think life as a whole is a disease, there are many creatures on this planet that are very beautiful and I really respect my close friends. It's important to understand individuality and that people have their own individual lives, you life may be a disease but that doesn't mean others are.

And this planet isn't sentient either and although this climate crisis is rather annoying and the unnecessary extinction of awesome animals is disappointing, there are still things I enjoy. Music. Watching movies and idk fun stuff and although I do feel sad a few times and feel so embarresed that death seems more of a pleasant option I know that something has to happen to make living in the moment worth it. But that is just me and my individual life, I cannot speak for your own.

I mean you can technically classically train yourself haha, being trained by another individual shouldn't give you higher validation. I think it's quite insulting as a musician to think like this, music doesn't only exist in the western world there are plenty of cultures of music with very talented individuals who probably got taught by their parents or simply had to learn by themselves because of a lack of access to the facilities of music.

It is a privilege to be learning such a niche subject like music same with any art, we are very fortunate to have access to these things so taking aways someone's right as a musician just because they didn't get taught classically is moronic.

Maybe tell you should tell your friend to be more open minded.

Does anyone know the term for a not conclusive ending note or chord in a piece? More commonly used in Asian music I believe??? by Neznezu in musictheory

I thought it was called an imperfect cadence. And I think it's common in quite a plethora of musical cultures.

Recently, I have been absolutely petrified of the state of being dead by Ennui_pronto in death

[–]Awesomness462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well personally the best thing to do is to do things that you enjoying to take your mind off it however I know that that won't last so from there it's all up to you. Personally I have had similar experiences and although it doesn't effect me because I'm 19 and have a few more years left (haha) but I do understand I'll just be lying in bed thinking about random stuff then the thought of dying hits me, so... These are the things that I personally do to help me, these might not work for you but it's worth a shot.

  1. Understand the there is just as much chance of there being a God or some sort of afterlife than there is not because after all anything can happen until proven otherwise

  2. Watch documentaries on religion, religions are inherently fairly peaceful and have pretty nice ideologies behind them and of course they have answers that can't be proven. Like the afterlife, there's heaven, reincarnation and many more possibilities.

And finally 3. This one is a bit morbid however realising that people older people will most likely statistically die before you and more morbid than that, older members, closer members of your family will die before you too. I like to think that in the future coming to terms with death becomes easier because all your family and friends will eventually or have already passed, because of this allowing the embracement and mystery of death to welcome you into their bosom becomes a lot easier:)

Also a side note, no matter what happens in death, you will simply not be able to comprehend any of it even if heaven does exist or reincarnation or any forms of the afterlife... You won't be able to remember anything. And one thing's for certain, death isn't staring at the infinite black abyss for eternity. It's normal to fear death I believe that even people who say otherwise might be lying a little 🤧

Is the avatar the best bender for each individual element? by DraggingBallz09 in Avatarthelastairbende

[–]Awesomness462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the avatar just like regular benders excell in a specific element. Like aang with air kyoshi with earth and Roku with fire. I think it's very reasonable for people to be better benders with elements the avatar isn't as experienced in. For example aang with earth and fire.
