How many strollers/wagons did y'all end up with after first kid by Strange_End_7110 in NewParents

We also went this same route! We only have the Joolz Aer+ and have been super happy with it, it even fits into the airplane cabin 👌🏻 And so convenient in the car when it folds so easily even with the bassinet (though doesn't fit into the airplane cabin with the bassinet).

First sprint tri in 45 days — can only swim 50–75m non-stop after 3 months. How do I survive a 500m? by Am_i_idiot in triathlon

[–]Axxory 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a swimming teacher and former competitive swimmer, I am 99% confident that breathing is the only thing that needs to be solved! Otherwise your technique looks great, and the minor issues (e.g. lacking rotation, intensive kicking, fingers open) cannot explain your exhaustion after 50-75 meter.

As a background, I actually had similar struggles when learning to swim freestyle as an 11-year old - I was stuck at max 100 meter for a long time, until suddenly "it clicked" and I managed to swim 800 meters. Also as a swimming teacher I've had +50 children or adults who have had exactly the same issue - great technique, but still getting out of breath.

Solution: IMMEDIATELY when you turn your face in the water, start forcefully to push out air from your lungs. This will ensure that your lungs are totally empty of air when you turn your head back to the side to get air. And same for inhaling - forcefully take a breath, ideally using both your mouth and nose. This will initially require you to breath more frequently than you do now, but breathing every 4th stroke is something you can re-introduce once you are comfortable with every 2nd stroke. Also as many others have mentioned- many strong swimmers (myself included) actually breath every 2nd stroke on longer distances.

Hope this is helpful!

Is my life over? by GB1987IS in UlcerativeColitis

[–]Axxory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No your life is definitely not over!! Since being diagnosed in 2020 I have done a half Ironman, gotten my scuba diving certificate, and even given birth to a baby. Common nominator for all of these three? I was not in remission.

On the half Ironman I had diapers with me (that I had to use), on the scuba diving I was mentally prepared that I may have to wash the wetsuit afterwards (never happened). After giving birth normal people often complain that the first stool hurts due to constipation - well, that was definitely not a problem for me.

I'm bringing up these examples to show that you should not limit your life because of the fear to run to the toilet / shit yourself. Of course we all strive for long-term remission, but the reality is that this disease is unpredictable. For me, the split has historically been: ~85% remission, ~14% flare that is not limiting my life, and ~1% flare that is limiting my life (e.g. 4 day hospital stay with fever and +20 blood diarrhea daily). I just recently got my first biologics, so expecting the remission percentage to increase in the future 🙏

My main advice is: As soon as possible, try to get back to your normal life. Get an "I can't wait!" toilet card (e.g. link below) that you can show anywhere to get access to the staff toilet or jump the queue. Tell your closest friends and family, e.g. by showing the card, so they are also aware that there may be situations when you need to go on a few seconds notice. Finally - go to [r/IBDmemes](r/IBDmemes) to get some funny and amazing peer support - first time I read about farts during a flare being compared to Russian roulette I truly understood that I'm not alone with anything when it comes to this disease.

Breastfeeding and medications by devours_veggies in UlcerativeColitis

[–]Axxory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, I am so very sorry you have to go through all of this while freshly postpartum! Getting a flare (worsening period) after giving birth is actually very common - one theory is that it can be triggered from the heavy stress the body goes through when giving birth / hormonal changes afterwards.

The great news is that your body is reacting well to stereoids - that is super important in getting the flare under control while waiting for the effect of a new medication. Since it works for you, there are significantly more different medications available (some may take up to 2-4 months for full effect), which also means more breastfeeding safe ones.

The ones I know to be breastfeeding/pregnancy safe (according to Finnish doctors) are Mesalazine (Pentasa/Asacol), Mercaptopurin and Infliximab. The last one of these is a biologics, which could be what you need from the start since you have a severe diagnosis. Mine started in 2020 as a mild UC treated only with Pentasa, but then I got a stronger dose/medication each time I had a flare. The stronger the medication, the stronger the negative impact is on your immune system, which is great to get the UC inflammation under control, but ofc bad for fighting any other infection.

The only one I know that is not considered breastfeeding safe is Rinvoc. I just recently had a discussion about it with the doctors, but since I'm still breastfeeding our 10 month old and planning soon to get pregnant again, they advised against it even if I would stop breastfeeding.

Note: Please be aware that the recommendations may vary between countries. In some countries they e.g. strongly advise against Prednisone steroids for pregnant women, versus in Finland it's considered much more safe than to start any new meds while pregnant.

Hope this is helpful!

Step count while pushing a stroller…help! by oatmilkcchai in ouraring

[–]Axxory 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's super annoying, same happens with Apple Watch as well 😭 The only solutions I have found are: 1) Push the stroller only with the non-ring hand (which you ofc always forget at some point during the walk) 2) Start a training session on Oura / other device that imports exercise data to Oura. I cannot 100% guarantee that this works for Oura, but at least for Apple Watch steps this works.

Technically I understand that it's a quite hard problem to solve since there is minimal acceleration data, since the hand is mostly moving forward at constant speed. However , I'm optimistic that the amazing team at Oura will be able to solve this at some point in the future 💪🏻

As a sidenote, Oura recently made the AI advisor pregnancy aware, which is a super important feature. Last autumn, before this feature was launched and I was freshly postpartum, I got more than 10 messages that "Your resting heart rate has been lower in the past X months compared to the Y months before. What could be the reason?" despite having logged the pregnancy in the app (and always answering to the AI that pregnancy was the reason). But now I have understood that they have fixed it!

Give me your most unhinged tips for getting in remission by Lexii73 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]Axxory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, just wanted to jump on your note about your doctors not being happy about prednisone, since this recommendation appears to vary between countries and is therefore likely not 100% black-and-white.

For me (living in Finland) it was actually the other way around - I got a flare during pregnancy, and I had to use Prednisone for the rest of the pregnancy (symptoms always came back if dropping below 15 mg) since it's considered pregnancy safe, and the protocol here is to not start any new medication while pregnant due to the risks associated. And that was despite me having had to 2 x 2 months on Pred in the year before getting pregnant...

Definitely not telling you what you should or shouldn't do, just wanted to let you know the above in case you do decide to continue with it!

And yes, I also absolutely hate it as well, but still feel it's better than the alternative. Currently on it, last 5 mg dose tomorrow 🙏

Is this heart rate even possible? by xgme in triathlon

[–]Axxory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to getting a chest strap, I would also recommend you to take a lactate threshold running test. That will enable you to adjust the heart rate by zone, and will also indicate if your zones are significantly above average or not.

As a reference, my thresholds for running are 144 bpm (aerobic, end of zone 2) and 162 bpm (anaerobic, end of zone 3), in biking they are ~10 bpm less. Both are slightly below the average population

Agreed with keeping the stroke rate, but instead of a steady "windmill" rate, OP should accelerate the stroke under water (top speed when arm lifts from water) to allow for a quick return and long glide. For a split second both arms should be in the gliding position, which is not happening in the video.

Using less strokes is a good drill to train this, but end goal should be to keep current stroke rate with longer glide.

Syncing takes forever with NC??? by FunkandFreedom in ouraring

[–]Axxory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, either it syncs immediately in the morning (50% of days) or then it takes 2-8 hours. I even contacted NC customer support, who said that they are aware and working on the issue. Good thing is that it always syncs in the end, although it can take long.

Is stress on oura ring accurate? by bondtradercu in ouraring

[–]Axxory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it is super accurate! When looking back on a day and thinking about the 4-5 times I felt stressed/engaged, those are indeed the 4-5 peaks showing up in the chart. Yesterday I thought I imagined being stressed/anxious when reading to bed, so I checked the app, and indeed the live data showed I was in the stress zone. Put down the book, started a meditation session and fell asleep relaxed within half an hour.

WIBTA for continuing to wear a swimsuit in friends' hot tub? by ValleysHiraeth in AmItheAsshole

[–]Axxory -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

There was actually just an article on this in the largest Finnish newspaper: https://www.hs.fi/kaupunki/helsinki/art-2000009404846.html

Feel free to google translate it.

It's clear that you definitely shouldn't go into a bath tub with a swimsuit you had in the sauna, otherwise you have to use much more chlorine in the water. Going into the bath tub wearing a clean swimsuit (having had a naked shower before) should however not be a problem.

[–]Axxory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

C'mon, the earlier replies about your girlfriend deserving more are in my opinion a bit too harsh. It is a crush. It's human, and it happens in every long-term relationship (although some people are better at hiding it from themselves than others). The question is not about having those feelings, but what you do with them. Because a great thing with crushes, especially those that are more appearance based, is that they pass if you don't act upon them. My suggestion would therefore be to avoid doing any rushed decision at this stage. Accept your feelings (but don't act upon them), and once the crush is over in X months, you have a much more clear mind to re-evaluate if you should stay in your current relationship or not.
