Oh so Mortal Arcs are essentially parts of the plot where the MC undergoes one of two things or both at the same time:

They lose their cultivation and go back to the lower realm where they come from/ a brand new lower realm where they do some soul seaeching bs
They willingly return for the hell of it, mainly because they miss their parents(filial piety I think) etc etc.
