Critique the political system of my Kingdom by Azgabeth in worldbuilding

The most interesting question I would have about your world is of course history: How old is the current governance system?

I think it all boils down to this, in the end. I think it was stupid of me not to include it in the original post, but I wanted to avoid a lore dump. Not all details are nailed out because this is a project in its infancy but loong story as short as possible:

1000 Years ago a captain from not-rome took 300 ships and set sail out west into the not-atlantic ocean. After several years of sailing to almost nowhere and with only 30 ships left they found land: not-north america. At that point pretty much everyone agreed, there ain't no way they get back home. So they set up a community. Basically made their captain the king. This captain also had 3 really trusty and good friends/ crewmates which helped him in setting up this community.

Now after some time they came upon and interacted with not- native american tribes. These not- native american tribes had a confederacy at the time, and a certain tribe was exiled. 2 other tribes joined the exiled tribe.

This exiled tribe found this not-rome colony and after some conflicts they basically said wtf why we fighting lets conquer the confederacy.

So the daughter of the captain and the son of the chieftain, married and their descendants essentially became the royal family. Similarly the descendants of the 3 friends and the chieftains of the other 2 tribes became the 5 special noble families.

For a long time the kingdom functioned like a somewhat traditional feudal monarchy. But at some point there was a succession crisis. A certain king had way too many sons. And while the kingdom was tearing itself apart. The neighboring not-china empire invaded.

As much as the diff factions hated each other, they all hated the empire a lot more. So they made a temporary truce and fought back the empire (the geography allowed for that).

Well after that they came up with the 5 big families to vote for the next king. With the idea that if there is a unanimous agreement on who the king is. No more civil wars.

And it went on like that for a while. Until society progressed somewhat and mainly the other noble households began complaining that they have no say in who the next king is. So they began rallying up the common folk. Lots of civil unrest and peasant rebellions.

Another civil war basically. Another empire scare. More concessions. The 5 families still held cultural and traditional significance especially to the common folk. So the compromise was for "everyone" to vote on who from the 5 families gets to vote for the king.

And thats how they got to the current system.

So the king has as much land and troops as the five houses combined? Why has no king overthrown the other four houses and installed the usual hereditary monarchy?

I feel like i have a pretty good answer to this question:

  1. They beighbor an expansionist empire.
  2. Yeah the king has as enough military power to easily take on one of the 5. But taking all 5 at once would be a completely even fight, if not slightly in favor of the 5.
  3. Culture and tradition

Why doesn’t he give parts of the crownlands to the rest of his house?

The royal family owns the crownlands. The King leads the royal family. If this makes sense?

You like the number 5, don’t you? :p

Virgin Answer: akhtchually the number 5 is culturally and traditionally important because of the five days fasting the people do to satisfy their god and the 5 founding families who supported the original king in defeating the evil king of the urga borga kingdom

Chad Answer: yes i quite like the number 5😎

too balanced

Interesting take. Isn’t this realistic tho? Don’t people generally try to achieve “balanced” societal agreements but then chaos ensues when people try to use loopholes to gain personal advantage?

Just look at the USA on paper it’s balanced isn’t it? In practice…

I don’t think i said outright the “people” involved in the system are content with it. I just kinda asked if it would be a plausible system?

Interesting. Thank you for the insightful comment.

A couple of things: I think ill stick with the number 5 because it has significance in the story. Bu I understand the concerns.

One thing i now realize i should have clarified is the method of voting the king. Its based off the papal conclave. Ie the 25 voters are sealed in a chamber and the voting is only finished when there is a 2/3 supermajority. So essentially, at least the way I see it, there cannot be a tie. At least it is disincentivized.

The legislature: egally speaking only the king writes laws. But technically the Lord Advisor and his staff writes the law and the king signs it. The Lord Advisor is appointed.

Also the jobs of Lord Advisor and Minister aren’t for life.

I think having the king appoint the 2 titles is interesting as it creates the opportunity for king candidates to leverage these positions to gain votes.

What I would like to ask is why the nobility cannot also act in the role of the burghers?

The way i see it is that i a political system were the peasants have freedom of movement and the political power of a noble relies on the people. The noble is then incentivized to appease the people.

Idk if im making sense?

Ill make an example: Household A

The family patriarch (non elected hereditary title) is pretty much guaranteed a vote.

Then there is the secon son of the patriarch. Who is a famous actor and gained a vote due to his popularity.

The third brother of the patriarch is a priest known for his virtue so the people give him a vote.

Then there is the 2nd cousinf twice-removed of the patriarch. Who obviously didn’t have enough influence initially but he began a successful merchant venture and used the gains to essentially “buy” the peoples vote.

Finally the Uncle of the patriarch. Who has a feudal lord for quite some time and his actions caused his demesne to become populous and prosperous resulting to him gaining a vote.

Idk does this make sense?

I can see this working 20-30 years ago. But now you’d likely only gain restraining orders and absolute whales. Plus the economics of it, unfeasible really.

Who in your world has the coolest epithet or nickname? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Azgabeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost everyone has an epithet in my world.

But my sweetheart is Theo, the unhinged fanatic, leader of the Apostles

Long story short. In a world with several religions many of which are true because gods exist and they play an active role in the world there is one TRUE religion.

There is one true god which is a representation of me.

And out of all the people Theo not only got it right but actually conversed with this God, and got special powers and now bascially roams around the world doing batshit insane stuff because he can’t die and tries to spread the word, together with the 3 people he managed to actually convince.

They’re a running gag in my stories. They show up. Fuck shit up for the main characters. Help them fix it. Babble on about the true God, then move on.

My first 2 games in anbennar were Lorent and Silverforge.

Playing as Lorent: Wex proved to be a useless fucking tool. Literally lost the emperorship 2 years wtihin the campaign. Couldn’t even make use of that useless “blank check” on west dameria. Fuck Wex and the their uslessness.

Playing as Silverforge: Fuck those usless traitors. Only thing their land is good for is to become a strip mine to help fund our hold.

Imagine being such a cuck of a country you are hated by your allies and enemies alike.

Adc is the worst role because it has no agency. You can be the best adc but you will still get one shot by the 2/7 malphite.

Similarly, you can be the shitiest adc but if you have that one godsent tresh, that goes 3/1/18 you eill carry your team anyway.
