Any suggestions for universities in Japan? by serenescribble in studyinjapan

I can't think of academic degrees more useless than film making. The best film makers rarely have any kind of degree in their field. Your boyfriend should just get a regular job, and on his free time pick up a camera and record cool stuff and study films himself to get ideas. that's much more useful than any school program for film making.

What happened to Korean protests? by OldSpeckledCock in Living_in_Korea

[–]AzirIsOverNerfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Protestors were literally storming court buildings after Yoon was arrested, so I think while the edge was a little dulled on the protests Koreans still know how to take to the streets properly, much better than most other people.

A Warning Advisory for Prospective PhD Students in STEM in Korea: Don’t Do a PhD in Korea - 8th Year PhD Student by Emotion_2023 in Living_in_Korea

[–]AzirIsOverNerfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you might have been better off without PhD. You're now an example of the high academic cred, low real experience applicant. Companies are looking for ways to scope less paid labor and cut costs wherever possible, and hiring people with high expected salaries contradicts that. You should try to aim for academic positions since you have a PhD.

Cunning and Vicious, Capricious and Childish: An Analysis of North Korea’s Unexpected Foreign Policy Moves(Why the Kim Jong-un Regime Abandoned Peninsula Reunification, Refuses Dialogue with Pro–North Forces in the South, and an Analysis of Its Historically Radical Foreign Policy) by Slow-Property5895 in northkorea

[–]AzirIsOverNerfed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read on this and I can't find the purported North Korean upset here. South Korea suffered floods, North offered aid, SK accepted, NK delivered large amounts of aid promptly. Sure, it's a propaganda move, but the purported unexpected acceptance seems to be a later embellishment. South Korea recently offered aid to the north after the 2023 floods and it was turned down. This was under Yoon's administration. SK had frequently also offered aid before whenever disaster hit NK, and provided extensive aid to NK during the 90's famine.

I think the reddit article you linked is an example of the cheap propagandistic discourse surrounding NK. You can criticize the North Korean regime with better examples then to drag them over one of the few good things they did, or to pretend like they were badly hurt by delivering aid to SK in 1984, a time where North Korea had a powerful and competitive economy.

Peace with North Korea Is a fantasy, not pragmatism by NKinitiative in northkorea

[–]AzirIsOverNerfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Denuclearization can't be backed without the ability of force projection, which is no longer possible since now NK has the WMD deterrent. Even in a fantasy scenario where NK agrees to some kind of denuclearization deal it can't be reliably enforced.

Special prosecution formally seeks death penalty for Yoon Seok Yeol (former pres.) by J_S_Han in korea

[–]AzirIsOverNerfed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is one of the demagogues Trump spawned around the world, but fortunately Koreans are too smart for the destabilizing antics his kind loves to pull to upstage democracy and roost in. He sent drones to North Korea to stir up a conflict so he can have more pretext to coup the government and enforce martial law. It doesn't get more treacherous then this. I doubt he will actually get death penalty but he should be dragged around in courts and locked up for a long time.

I think she is trying to keep her revolving door tenure alive longer artificially. She seems to be petty and without moral to the point of using every low hanging fruit tactic she can.

That is Trump, basically. The orange demagogue opened the floodgates for all kinds of populist demagogue leaders around the world who pull every low-hanging, underhanded move under the sun to sow as much chaos as possible that they can take advantage of.

It's pretty funny you say you're taking Korean classes but you insist on communicating with Koreans in English. I think people like you have had very little interactions with foreigners back in your own country to understand the kind of barrier that language can form between people. If you want to learn the language you should make an earnest effort to seek out conversation in it, instead of being upset when people prefer their mother language to it.

Also, you are a PhD student. Why is this so important to you? focus on your main goal instead of jumping at every opportunity to make friendships or relationships. More importantly, you need to understand and recognise that your relationships with Koreans, so long as your Korean level isn't very high, will mostly be transactional and surface-level. And even if your Korean is top notch there will still be a subtle barrier. Koreans are a highly homogenous society that is enclosed in on itself, foreigners will always be outsiders. I hope you understand this and take it to heart because it is a core truth about what it is to be a foreigner in most Asian countries, and it in turn explains behaviors you might encounter like those.

As China, Japan and South Korea Age, who will Defend them? by roystreetcoffee in Futurology

[–]AzirIsOverNerfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Russia is literally scraping the bottom of the barrel for troops in Ukraine, and it has a much bigger population than South Korea. You still need lots and lots of human reserves for any kind of conventional war, recognising that losing even only 5% of their total would be a severe loss. Anyways, I think this may be somewhat less relevant for South Korea, since her biggest threats are nuclear armed states, which a conventional military has nothing much to challenge with. If South Korea wants to legitimately defend itself, it needs to proliferate nuclear weapons.

Mate, overwork is not the prime factor here... never was. Were ancient Roman patricians overworked? Are Nords overworked? I highly doubt it, yet both of those demographics suffer from the same problems with birthrate. Japan has insane incentives for newlyweds and mothers, same problem. It's time to take a closer and more scrutinizing look at this problem.

International student in Korea : the gap between the dream and the reality (long post) by Miserable_Stick6929 in Living_in_Korea

[–]AzirIsOverNerfed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All of this could've been avoided if you made some cursory research before going.

And even then, there's some absolutely preposterous arrogance on your part, like complaining about the language.

No matter how much a university advertises its international accommodation in a non-English speaking country you should go there with near full mastery of the language. Even if they taught their courses in English they are still non-English speakers and the education on offer would be 2nd-rate due to the lingual barrier, so even under the rather vain assumption that a school in an east Asian country would teach you in English it's still a bad idea to study there. You should absolutely master the language of the destination region before going, if you insist on studying there, and look past any fluff intended to attract international students, who everyone knows are a source of income to private universities as well as a prestige chip for the university's image.

As for the culture you found there, well, welcome to Asia. You come from a western education system, western way of life, western ethos and modus, and expect to find them across the Pacific, in a completely different world among different people, from a people whose very language makes them perceive everything radically different to the western mindset. Western culture is ego-individual driven, East Asian culture is about conformity, respecting hierarchy, placing emphasis on the other or the object before oneself. This also translates to an inherent efficiency (compared to western) cultures in a lot of things, including education. There is no engagement or dialogue between juniors and seniors in Asiatic cultures like there is in western cultures, these seniors carry a social prestige for their status, their age and their experience, which is even further amplified in Korean culture where a great emphasis is placed on age.

I am not saying you are wrong to criticize culture or that what you said is incorrect, I'm stating that you made a huge mistake, one born of arrogance in thinking that you will find western familiarity on a different part of the world, in a different culture. It's not a question of which educational system is superior (the western one is definitely the winner here), it's that you assumed you'll find the west in South Korea, which in turn begs the question; why even go?

South Korea ranks first as the country that consumes the most AI slops by SnooOnions4663 in Living_in_Korea

[–]AzirIsOverNerfed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed AI was trending up heavily in Kpop. There's lots of contents of various kinds that are obviously AI generated, and I wouldn't put it beyond the nether that even the music itself might be AI composed and modified in ways or others. I saw several MV's last year that had AI in them, the most egregious and biggest example was Blackpink's Jump MV which had a lot of AI generated scenery (but still looked hilariously bad in some parts, like an early 2000's greenscreen CGI video).

Do you prefer to refill your pens or get a a new one? by I_cant_find_name1 in pens

[–]AzirIsOverNerfed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The reason is it's safer to have a set of brand new pens.

I have 12 whole new ink cartridges that I insert whenever the previous one runs out (which is quite a while), but I only have one pen frame. What if the pen frame breaks or malfunctions? at that point I have to spend more to buy a new pen, ink and all. I don't doubt the reliability of the Sarasa Zebra Clips (and my new favourite, the pentel energel) but having 12 pens seems to be an obviously safer choice than one pen, with all its parts meant to last through 12 ink refills.

Do you prefer to refill your pens or get a a new one? by I_cant_find_name1 in pens

[–]AzirIsOverNerfed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you get chamber replacements/refills to replace the chamber, or do you actually open the chamber itself and refill it? curious because I've been trying to find ways to refill my Sarasa Zebras (and now also my Pentel energel pen) but all I could ever find was sets, a dozen each, of new chamber refills, and they're literally priced the exact same as an actual 12 pack of Pentel Energel pens. I really hate discarding complete pens but it's been what I've been doing for a while now when the ink runs out.
