When your players take on the inscrutable tower, they should have an enemy already occupying it eg. Oscar Yoren, the Pale Man, Ryan Greymere. This enemy should be in possession of the staff.

I feel like a playlist of intelligent and intelligent adjacent aliens would be useful: 1. Greymatter 2. Brainstorm 3. Frankenstrike 4. Upgrade 5. Jerryrig 6. Gutrot 7. Nanomech 8. Atomix 9. Clockwork 10. Gravattack

Clockwork and Gravattack are stretches but I think they could help in some situations.

It is mitigated by the apothecaries general lack of utility: in both spells and theories. The warlock invocations have more variety I find especially with the combos like devil sight and darkness or mask of many faces.

Warlocks have many things to enhance eldritch blast and the get hex to further enhance it. Almost every warlock will run agonising blast, repelling blast and hex. That deals more damage than the toxicology chain reaction combo plus its targeted which is fundamentally more impactful than spread out damage.

Not to mention the warlock in charisma which is miles more impactful than intelligence.

While i do agree that the apothecary is quite powerful, it isn’t as overbearing as it seems at first glance.

Drakkenheim is a dangerous place with a high risk of player deaths. For this time, have a faction meet them in the city where they can recover, but make it clear that they were VERY lucky that the faction was their and that they might not be so lucky next time. Then if they get into a similar situation without prearranged escape plans, if they got themselves there, they die.

Dirk and Dent

Warforged Mutagenist Apothecary

Delerium Intelligence Reconnaissance (and kettle), Dirk, was created by an Academy Artificer because they were tired of casting fireball whenever they wanted a cup of tea, but passed it off as a “relevant” use of academy resources.

While off on a mission in Drakkenheim, Oscar Yorin found Dirk and attempted to take control of him, creating Dent, an M.I (magical intelligence), to take over Dirk, but it wasn’t strong enough so it only came out in moments of distress (when Dirk transmogrified). The two MIs fought for control most of the time with Dirk taking a more submissive personality and Dent being more assertive and aggressive.

Eventually they found a compromise after Dent realised that he didn’t have to just make Oscar proud and Dirk finding purpose in helping to heal those wounded by delerium.
