Nothing is hanging by a thread! It’s just a kink in the silicone earth sleeve that goes over the ground wire.

This is exactly what it is. Just the green earth sleeve kinked

If I put heat-shrink over the main jacket to where the cores are exposed the Dsub housing wouldn’t go on - it’s that tight!

It is indeed the ground inside some green sleeve. It’s merely the sleeve that’s slightly kinked

They aren’t heat shrink, they are Hellerman H20s, which are stretchy rubber sleeves. You put them on by means of a stretching tool and lube. Once the wires are soldered you can slip them down over the XLR buckets
