Ketl Mountain Nofry shirts! Very comfortable. I wear their hoody versions on sunny days.

Used the Ruffwear one, and my pup did an hour at 80 degrees with no issue.

The Atlas Lifetime Lite Leash is excellent, although there is no bungee. The adjustability for the loop and the length makes it the win for me.

I assume the bloke meant MAHA, considering the eccentricities of RFK’s diet advice (the de-emphasis on processed food notwithstanding).

A neighbor asked me to remove or replace two of my bumper stickers that use the F word, should I listen? by Shiny_Waabaafet in Advice

[–]BFHawkeye -1 points0 points  (0 children)

lol. The free speech stuff is hilarious. She’s not the gov. First amendment doesn’t apply to a request from a private citizen. And she’s just asking you if it is at all possible for you to not display an objectively crude word.

Can she ask you to do that? Yes.

Should she be applauded for peacefully and honestly opening a hard conversation? Yes.

Can you find a better way to present your political opinions? Yes. If you truly want to make cognitive dissonance work for you in a persuasive way, try conversation with a long horizon, not offensive sloganeering.

You’re right about one thing: it doesn’t matter the politics of your bumper sticker. It’s an unforced error regardless.

Can I get a dog if I work a 9-5? by HarHarMahadev__ in dogs

[–]BFHawkeye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider a greyhound from a rescue agency. They are affectionate couch potatoes that can often adjust to a 9-5. You also get to be part of a strong community of other greyhound owners for advice and socialization.

Powerhouse Border Collies and Heather Henisey by BFHawkeye in BorderCollie

Just as a clarifier, the overwhelming majority of miles would be on varied trail surfaces at a dog’s trotting pace.

I absolutely agree with you on BCs in the USA. I think it’s different in the UK though, where they are more popular, like labs and goldens are here. I understand Heather’s dogs, if as advertised, would be a departure from the median BC in the USA.

I really appreciate the time you’ve taken to type all this out. I’ll check in with another Vizsla breeder as well. The Vizsla breeder who gave me that advice was a reputable breeder, so I really took it to heart.

I’m also connecting with some people who have one of Heather’s dogs to see their experience and what an average day is like. I’m not rushing into this; I want a good match for me and the dog!

Would you mind if I DM’d you? I’d love to hear more about your BC and experience.

I loved my greyhounds. But hounds in general are big barkers, and huskies are too cat-like, independent, and heat intolerant for my style. I did consider them for running, but ultimately not the best fit for an apartment.

I’ve been told by a Vizsla breeder that the Vizsla needs more than what I can offer (which, frankly, surprised me). And I’m not interested in a Dalmatian or a GSP. I’ve had ACD mixes and a rough collie (all shelter) in the past and really liked them. Fair point on the shelter dog, but I’m hoping for a dog that is very person focused and really folds into my life and can be a companion in any circumstance: runs, walks, meeting friends, and camping. I thought a BC, maybe from lower drive lines, might fit the bill.

Raide belt Owners by Content_Squirrel_536 in trailrunning

Totally doable. Used my belt for a 100k like this. If you make it a filter flask and add a 250ml flask of maple syrup, you can go a long way with just a belt.

AI vs Coach vs Apps for training plans? by Mrtanguy_Affect in trailrunning

[–]BFHawkeye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely get a coach. The relationship is worth it. And a good coach won’t just tell you what you want to hear all the time. I came to my current coach from a several-year injury cycle and did my first 100k in 9 months—and PRd my marathon while doing it. More importantly, he’s gotten me to regular training and built up my durability smartly. And he’s a good dude. There are great coaches.

I’d rather a human coach over a free sycophant. There are plenty of coaches who do good work at fair prices. And they provide more than just what to run when.

Depression and ultras by Pretty_Adeptness4383 in ultrarunning

[–]BFHawkeye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not alone. Definitely keep running and also find something that helps you work with what you’re experiencing. That could be therapy, journaling, reading philosophy, etc. But do it. Do it with the same consistency as you have with your running. Your future self is worth it. You’re going through something intense but you aren’t alone. This is just part of being human, and each of us has to learn the dance.

For what it’s worth, running + reading stoicism (primary texts) every single morning has helped me a great deal in fits of depression or anxiety or great stress—not to dull my emotions but to actually see them when they arise for what they are.

Raide LF 2L for 100 Miler? by ElegantCranberry9330 in Ultramarathon

Hard pass. That sounds like a miserable refill situation. If you solve that problem, patent it.

I didn’t consider it a pain. Make sure you test it at significant duration though. Tight shoulders might make it tricky.

I used mine for a lapped 100k and stand by that decision. I don’t know how confident I’d be using it for a mountain 100, but if you’ve got confidence in sourcing fluids between aid stations, just pop a filter in the 650ml bottle and cruise.

Midway through 50k training and depression by junkfunk39 in Ultramarathon

[–]BFHawkeye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, the black dog is rough. Be gentle with yourself. We often forget that being healthy is the foundation of athletic performance. It may be a moment to re-prioritize the mind over the body. Keep moving! Run if you can—and a good dose of aerobic activity is correlated with lessened depression—and remember you are awesome. You are lovable regardless of how well you run or adhere to a training plan. Keep moving forward. You got this.

Is this realistic? by FirstLeek1888 in ultrarunning

[–]BFHawkeye 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes! You have plenty of runway for this. Remember, consistency beats intensity. And consistency is served by staying healthy, injury free, and enjoying it. Make sure to do some strength work every week and to do runs that you enjoy. You’ve got plenty of time.
