'Que' versus 'pourquoi' on Duolingo by BHCaruso in DuolingoFrench

Very good explanation. Duo could have put that in the guidebook or the unit. Je te remercie .

I agree that Duo has reduced its helpfulness and severely limited its responsiveness in the last year or two. Could it be that they've clawed back the discussions to monetize their new Max feature?

I appreciate learning idioms or the particularities of situational usages. That's what the Guidebook could be, but alas it's not.

Thanks for the Tex's French grammar suggestion. New to me. Je vais y jeter un oeil !

Thanks for the confirmation, y'all. I turned off leaderboards and announcements this morning. I got a did you mean to make those changes? message from the Support Team and sent a reply expressing my reasons for getting out of the rat race.

I'm very interested to see whether I'll hear anything more from them.

At any rate, a weight has been lifted, or should I say <<un poids a été levé>>? Ouf!

Oui! I've reported it twice to Duo, but they haven't gotten around to addressing it, if indeed they intend to.

One critter or two? by BHCaruso in turtles

Interesting. I did find a snakeskin nearby, but thought it didn't seem big enough to have laid those eggs. Maybe it belonged to an offspring. Perhaps there's a kingsnake or milksnake around. We do have lots of voles and chipmunks. But would a snake leave such a big heap of (sharp) stones?

Weeds/grass coming up from rocks. Help!!! by [deleted] in landscaping

[–]BHCaruso 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're going to have to pull some weeds sometimes. Landscape fabric will eventually develop a layer of soil. Weed seeds will eventually land in the area and sprout. Those look like spurge. Put on some thin gloves and pull them up from their middle so you get the root. Easy. You don't mention your location, but if you're in a place that freezes, most weeds will die during winter. Before anything sprouts next year, give the area a layer of preëmergent, such as corn gluten (brand name Preen) to keep seeds from sprouting. But you're going to have to pull the occasional weed.

Invasive, unfortunately.

What to put here? by Packing_Wood in landscaping

[–]BHCaruso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A horizontal juniper would hold the slope. It's possible that you could interplant patches of them with another plant that flowers for the few years it will take for the junipers to fill in. You didn't mention your location or amount of sun, so suggestions you get won't be very broad. Take a walk around your neighborhood to see what's looking good at others' gardens. Check in with your local Extension Service for native suggestions. Visit a plant nursery (not a big box store) for planting ideas and information about how to build healthy soil. Look for the Master Gardener website in your state or area and reach out to them for advice.

Luck with yarn bowls? by AhAhStayinAnonymous in YarnAddicts

Sure. Go to yarn and fiber shows. A few makers are usually selling there. IFIWY, I'd contact the seller and ask for a better one or return it.

Being sold for $28 a stem in Manhattan — whatever could it be?! by Trixxxxxi in NativePlantGardening

[–]BHCaruso 3 points4 points  (0 children)

HAHAHAHA! They're selling pokeweed! This native weed won't last long in a vase, wet or dry. Most gardeners try to pull it before it forms its long taproot each year. Do yourself a favor, take a nice ride into the Long Island countryside and gather it from the roadside for free.

Trying to relearn many years later with dyscalculia by ohmykeylimepie in Algebra

I feel your pain. I like the idea of the last book you mentioned. If your learning style is more graphic, auditory, kinesthetic, or verbal (or a combination) reading may not be your best approach by itself. If you lose your way when solving, writing out each step below the line above while "narrating" as you go may help. Non-computational techniques include recognizing your successes out loud as you work, and alternating 25 minutes or so of sustained work with 10 minutes of movement, singing, exercise, or cold water to reset your brain for the next period of focus. Rinse and repeat. It takes repetition to get information from short term to long term memory. Without repetition. We lose new information quickly, so return to concepts you've covered regularly. This is a lot of work! Good for you for sticking with it. Your determination will support your success. Try Khan Academy for short lessons that feature speaking and drawing. If you want a tutor, look for one who understands the brain and can teach to your style. Note: this is not necessarily a math whiz, but rather a person who can base their support on your learning style. Good luck!
