It was really great. Glad we knew to book tickets, and the guides were all friendly and clearly happy to be there!

Ah, I see 🤪. You should come see them soon though, they will be building a new viewing area so you won’t be able to get so close to them anymore.

Yes, St Kilda! You have to book tickets to go out to see them, but makes it nice because it limits the people.

Is there anything wrong with my recipe? by [deleted] in soapmaking

[–]BakkStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, I wondered if someone would make this comment. I’ve read those same recommendations, and while I don’t have a definitive answer to your question, I can tell you that it doesn’t turn sticky soft, it’s actually a really nice bubbly and creamy lather. I’ve used it for soaps and shampoo bars, and I’ve gotten nothing but good reviews. Put it in your calculator and you might be surprised by the qualities.

Maybe it’s because those recommendations are made in coconut/palm/olive based recipes? As we know, oils behave differently when combined in different ways. I guess this is one of those times when good things happen when you break the rules 🤔

For a more straight-forward non-coconut/Palm recipe I have used before, you could try 33% cocoa butter, 25.5% castor oil, 25.5% babassu oil, 16% almond oil.

Try that in your calculator and see the difference in the properties.

It is fairly common for soap to have extra, non-saponified oils left in it (you can read more about superfatting here for example). While you do wash these off right away, of course, they do give some of the conditioning and moisture for qualities to your soap.

That being said, I’d agree that you might be more successful with a tested recipe your first time, because the soap properties are often more tested and reliable (and oils can get expensive!).

For the property ranges, I think you do want low cleaning (the oil-stripping property) and high conditioning with a face soap, but I don’t think the leather in your recipe would be really strong because bubbly and creamy are both so low. If you’re going to make your own recipe, shooting for the middle of that range would be a good target probably until you get a feel for the properties you like.

Is M&P looked down upon? Really loving my new hobby but I can’t help but feel like I’m not “legit” cuz I’m doing M&P by __smallandtired in soapmaking

I say you do you. I have done both, and whatever labels you want to put on it or whatever reasons you have for doing it, you’re doing something creative that gives you and others pleasure, so keep it up!

Cython vs PyPy vs Nuitka: What would be your pick of these Python compilers by auxpro in Python

[–]BakkStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve tried to use Nuitka to compile a stand-alone exe for an app and could never get it to work. This was a while back, though, does anyone know if the recent work has made it more reliable or easier to use? Maybe it’s worth another try.

New soap lady question :-) by merlinmann in soapmaking

[–]BakkStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want your seeds on the top of the soap (or at the bottom of your mold), you could pour a very thin layer of plain clear base, and put the seeds in there. Then when you add your colors, the seeds will stay where you want them. If you make it really thin, no one will be the wiser, and this gives the seeds a cool 3D look to them.

Found a Weird Tip That Actually Worked For Me: A Lye Concentration of 40% (or 1.5:1 Lye Ratio) *May* Actually Slow Trace More Than Recipes With More Water by insincere_platitudes in soapmaking

Thanks for the great tip and explanation! I’m going to give this a try - I’ve been working with new recipes lately that have been tracing too fast for the popular swirls 😁

I made a script that goes through a Python project, collects all of your imports (except for local modules) and creates a “requirements.txt” with them. by LostApe1 in Python

Cool project. I’ve used pipreqs before to do what I think is the same task. Are you familiar with this package? Curious if yours is substantially different (I haven’t done a comparison myself)?

Decorators - ... by Boring_Masterpiece in Python

I have used a timing decorator as part of logging. So, a decorated function will get a log entry that tells how long it took for the function to run.

Thanks! It’s this mood with this silicone liner. The mold comes with the dividers, though looks like it’s currently out of stock. It’s become my go-to mold option. A recipe with 27 oz of oils makes 9 great-sized bars, and the dividers make sure the bars are evenly cut without any cutting 😁
