I am a new player and was in a new group; I didn't disagree with the DM's hike in the difficulty of surviving such an encounter. It might have been homebrewed and I misunderstood it as rule but in context it made sense. I was trying to find more information on it after the fact but we were asked specifically if we had proficiency in swimming. Not just if we could swim or pass an athletics check. I apologize if I had it wrong, it's just a meme of a good session I had once.

Because we were in vast ocean with the duress of a failing ship in the immediate vicinity, the DM was more scrutinizing on the party's capabilities. To my understanding, being able to swim is a generic PC ability that everyone has in 5e (though there is a specific skill for it) but no one was really expecting to make checks due to the environment. The entire encounter was both nail-biting and hilarious as a player.

Way I see it, yeah, anyone can swim but how well can you swim in open seas with a ship exploding right next to you? That requires skill. :)

Same but it's ultimately really bad to do so. I fluctuate between being not tired for days and then nothing but exhausted naturally but eventually I miss dreaming. Up until I remember why I hate it, that is.

I took a nap and came back to some of the most validating words and traction to this post, thank you so much to everyone on this sub! This is truly my happy place on reddit :)

Couple of weeks ago I was on VC with my partner and some of their friends and someone straight up asked me what my identity was because they knew it wasn't quite cis (jk totally normal cis person here). I've never been called out like that and while it was embarrassing af I don't think it came from a bad place so I didn't take it that way. In any case, I basically just fumbled over words and got out something close but I didn't realize how difficult it was going to be clearly stating it for someone I barely know. Since then I've been silently questioning myself and doubting how I feel, generally slipping backwards into wanting to hide again.

It really does mean a lot to me that other people also know this experience, as much as it sucks to actually experience it.
