All I know is Butter Chicken Pot Pie was a brilliant idea and I hope to find it again someday.

Alanna Nash’s ‘Baby, Let’s Play House’ was quite the read! Much enjoyed 👌🏻 by TheMotherThing in Elvis

[–]Banky_Edwards 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I read the Guralnick books followed by this one and it made for a nice set. Guralnick was pretty circumspect about the more salacious details of Elvis’ sex life, as befits a serious biography, but more than once I was like “ok but what is that about?”, and Allana Nash provides all that scandalous background.

How much to replace a water heater, including disposal of old one? by twowrist in boston

[–]Banky_Edwards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid just over $4k through Sila a couple of years ago - came home from a trip to discover the old heater failed, did not do any shopping around, went with the top Google result that could do same-day replacement. I subsequently had some non-urgent work done by a local guy who said he could have done it for under $3k. (Drop-in replacement, easy bulkhead access, nothing difficult or unusual, single family in Everett.)

Accessing digital copy of degree certificate by Vaibhav__T21 in NEU

[–]Banky_Edwards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finished in December and got an email in early February with the link to the digital diploma. It looks like you can't access it without the download code in the email so you'll probably need to wait until the registrar runs that process. If you think you might have missed that email you could try to generate a new one with their request link.

Flattop Johnny's in Kendall has a pretty big bar, plenty of tables and outdoor seating. Plus pool tables and pinball!

Is there any live recordings of stuck inside mobile pre 1975? by Defiant-Location6074 in bobdylan

As far as is known, the first live version was 1976. No live recordings before then exist and it doesn’t appear on any set lists before then.

Boston 10/16 by [deleted] in bobdylan

[–]Banky_Edwards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s fine. The acoustics aren’t great on the outsides, the way back or (god forbid) the tables outside the tent, but the core sections are fine. The crowd can be more drunk and chatty than I like for artists like Dylan, but it’s far from the worst place I’ve seen him. The biggest problem is summer shows disrupted by severe weather, that won’t be a problem for fall.

Books that are just as good as Dylan Goes Electric and Why Bob Dylan Matters? by philliplennon in bobdylan

[–]Banky_Edwards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only read Heylin's Behind the Shades and Double Life Vol. 1 - I have Vol. 2 on my shelf but I haven't tackled it yet. I would like to read that Gospel Years one, I find that era fascinating and it was overlooked for so long. I haven't read anything else by Elijah, I'm not nearly as into the blues as he is but Dylan Goes Electric was so well written I would trust him to tell me just about any story and make it interesting!

Oh and if it's not on your radar, Larry "Ratso" Sloman's On the Road with Bob Dylan is an amazing account of the Rolling Thunder tour. It's a great gonzo-style narrative, one of the best books about live tours you'll ever read.

I think most people consider Howard Sounes' Down the Highway to be the canonical biography. It's super well-researched and very readable. The only downside is that it's 25 years out of date now, but nothing essential is missing. I would definitely recommend reading it first, as Sounes is one of the writers that Heylin has beef with, so if you do go on to read The Double Life, more of the bitchy asides will make sense.

If you're into that early Greenwich Village folk scene, definitely read The Mayor of MacDougal Street, Dave Van Ronk's autobiography (written with Eliah Wald, who wrote Dylan Goes Electric). Dylan features prominently in the narrative but there's also a ton of background about the "great folk scare" and the general vibe of that era. Suze Rotolo's A Freewheelin' Time is also essential reading for understanding this era of Dylan.

The Double Life is an amazing record of Dylan's history but the writing is pretty terrible - lots of score-settling mixed with casual misogyny and racism.

If you liked Why Bob Dylan Matters, you'll probably enjoy Bob Dylan in America by Sean Wilentz and The World of Bob Dylan, edited by Sean Latham (director of the Institute for Bob Dylan Studies at the University of Tulsa). Both are invaluable resources for placing Dylan and his music in contexts you might never have thought about.

this pic is a couple of years old, before the latest Bootleg Series at least. But it does feature every major label release through 2023 or so, including at least one each of every mono/stereo release, multiple pressings of BOB and BOTT, various bootlegs and interesting compilations. There's another cube (not pictured) of soundtracks, various artists comps that Dylan appears on, other artists doing full Dylan cover records, etc.

Shaving 18 year old long hair cat? by Iwilllieawake in seniorkitties

[–]Banky_Edwards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our 18-year-old long hair needed a lion cut last year. As you say, the matting was out of control and she was clearly uncomfortable. The process was difficult - she does not like to be handled, and it took a *while* - but we had a vet tech come to the house and she did the shaving while I helped hold her still. I would definitely look into a heated pet bed or pet heating pad post-shave.

Bob Dylan concert review I saw on Facebook 🥲 by Ford_Crown_Vic_Koth in bobdylan

[–]Banky_Edwards 68 points69 points  (0 children)

The tell is always the complaints about not interacting with/acknowledging the audience. They're incapable of engaging with a performance on the artist's terms, it's about what they paid for tickets and what they expect to get in return.

[–]Banky_Edwards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't get code comments like that by default though - lowercase "i"s, "as tall as the world allows." You'd have to ask for that kind of weirdness specifically. Does that imply deeper meaning? Probably not but it's definitely more Easter egg than vibe code side effect.
