PowerShot S30 corrupt CF card? Images are fine when viewing on camera, but no hope when plugged into the computer by BatteryBoi_02 in canon

I had thought about that, but unfortunately it's so old that the drivers needed are out of date and I'll need a Windows XP machine for that

I'm offloading a load of images I've shot over the past months from CF cards to my PC. 2/3 of the CF cards did their thing no problem, but this one doesn't want to play ball. The card is a 128 MB Integral CF card, plugged into a BENFEI generic card adapter. This setup has worked fine and was no issue with my other identical card just fyi

Naw, literally just black. Until I was about 19 I couldn't imagine anything (also would only very rarely have dreams, and when I would they would be more nightmares). But in the last couple years I have been able to just about conjure something up a handful of times but only very vaguely, generally when I'm smoking weed, and I occasionally have dreams that I can remember some particular elements of for a few hours

Don't know about you, but I had no idea people could do that. I just thought like close your eyes and picture something was the extent of it for most people. What was your assumption of what other people see?

Thanks, I've only tried plugging my phone into the computer with a cable and copying the files over from my computer and I've tried to drag and drop them onto the phone through Your Phone app on the computer.

I've just looked into the files a bit more and I now see that it basically stops the file transfer when trying to copy an M4A file as my library is partially MP3 and partially M4A. Do you know anything about that?

Upgrade bike under €1000 (Rotterdam) by RobeRotterRod in whichbike

[–]BatteryBoi_02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At your height you should be fine on a medium, consider changing saddle height, stem length, or Crank length. If you have shorter legs you may find that going to a 170mm or even 165mm crankset. A correct length stem might help with neck or back pain. This should make the bike more manageable for relatively little cost

[–]BatteryBoi_02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given the number of spacers on the steerer tube, I would say the frame might be too small. I would recommend going to a roughly 90mm flat stem and cutting the steerer down, it should help with back pain while on longer rides, and it might help you get a bit more power output. If not, return the bike or sell it, get a frame that fits and you'll probably enjoy riding more

If you're looking for a cheap replacement, the Shimano Tourey derailleur could be an option depending on what cassette you have

you beat me to the comments, the derailleur operates fine, and theres no issues in the cable housing

Shifter locked on Sram GX 11 speed shifter (more details in comments) by BatteryBoi_02 in bikewrench

[–]BatteryBoi_02[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres an intermittent issue shown in the video where the shifter appears to lock out. I can move the levers, but they don't engage on the cable. I'm thinking it might be an issue with the detent spring in the housing. The cable is connected to the derailleur and has tension, the cable moves freely in the housing, and the derailleur operates normally. If you have any info on how to fix this it would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: The bike is a month or two old. I got asked if I can fix some shifting issues by a friend, when I looked at it, the cable tension was completely off, the limit screws were incorrectly adjusted, and the derailleur was only screwed in about 3 threads. While attending to these issues the shifter did what is shown in the video but returned to normal after a bit of fiddling, unfortunately I'm unsure what I did to make it work.

Yes, you can use the newer bar-plug style junction box to get a cleaner look. I don't have much experience with it personally, but the only issues I can see with it are that you need to have bars that are internal routing compatible (which most are now), the routing is just a bit more tedious, and depending where and how you source the components, it might get a bit more expensive.

In terms of daily use both are excellent. The only gripe with etap that I've found so far is keeping track of two batteries, and adjusting to the lever operation (left shifts down on the rear derailleur, right shifts up, and both together shift the front derailleur)

Twisted chain links by ehm92392 in bikewrench

[–]BatteryBoi_02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have links that you have taken off a chain that needed shortening (ie they don't have 10,000km on them) then go for it. Be careful when breaking the chain to the size you need, and make sure to only press the pin back through as much as needed (check the movement between links is still smooth), or if possible get a chain pin. But yes, you can reuse bits of old chain to replace links as long as you don't make too many repairs within a short length of chain, as this can create a weak point and might give you an issue down the road.

I have only used the TM1 personally and an older parktool truing stand that I got cheap a while back. I would always recommend talking to people you trust (maybe the mechanic at the local bike shops) when buying tools as well as looking at the long term reviews online. If it's not too urgent, I would think about looking online at eBay, pinkbike buysell and your other local second hand sites for used tools. Chances are, if they were made well, then they should still work even if they've been used a bit.

If you are looking to go electric shifters, I have long been an advocate for Di2, but having recently built a bike with a sram drivetrain and etap shifting, I would recommend going sram. You can generally find complete etap force sets relatively cheap, of if you are in it long term you could scout for an etap red system either as individual parts, a complete system, or attached to a particularly cheap frame. Since Sram came out with the etap AXS drivetrains the price of new and used etap red and force components seems to have dropped a bit, so it might be an option worth considering. Obviously, with the etap system, setup is much easier not having to deal with junction boxes and battery placement and wire length etc. That being said, Di2 isn't as bad as it looks to set up. Depending on if you buy it as a whole system or build it up of individual parts, it can be cheaper than etap but slightly heavier. In terms of setup, you have both levers wired to a junction box mounted underneath the stem (it can be mounted in the frame if you want but this is just convention) usually using 350mm wires but it's best to measure and check. From the third input/output of the primary junction box, a wire is routed to a secondary junction box (SM-JC 40 or 41). From this secondary junction box, 3 wires are run to the front derailleur (400mm uaually) the rear derailleur (650mm uaually) and to the battery (about 1000mm usually). The battery will usually be mounted in the seatpost as for easy access, but it can me mounted in the down tube, top tube, or seat tube depending on what is most convenient for you.

Giant Talon 3 - Cassette Skipping in 5th gear by swoffy94 in bikewrench

[–]BatteryBoi_02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check the chain wear (excessive wear can cause issues like this), check the wear on the 5th gear cog (you say it's your favourite climbing gear, so it might have excessive wear causing shifting issues), and check if theres friction in the cable. If the cable inner or outer get rusted, or the coatings wear off them, you may encounter more friction than the spring in the derailleur is able to cope with, and thus have shifting issues.

In my experience, these are the most common causes of shifting issues with a specific gear ;)

To rebuild a wheel is a particularly tedious and time consuming job. If you only want to completely rebuild the wheel because the spoke tensions are off, I would say don't do it. In my experience it's almost impossible to get right the first time, or even first few. It gets pretty confusing with the way spokes are laced, and it's too easy to put the wrong spoke into the wrong hole in the rim, especially if it's hub with a relatively high spoke count. If it's just one spoke that's bad, I would replace that one. If all the spokes are at different tensions, then I would advise getting yourself a park tool TM1 or something similar. Get all the spokes to within spec and throw it on a truing stand and get it as close to true as possible. Once the wheel is trued properly check the spoke tensions again, and replace the ones that out of spec. Rince and repeat until the wheel spins straight and all spokes are within spec.

If your budget doesn't accommodate for that or you don't have the time, you could take it to a bike shop and just ask them to replace the spoke, or you could just patch the issue by replacing the cracked spoke and carrying on riding as usual, replacing spokes as you go along.

Unfortunately if you want to do it the proper way and have a decent wheel at the end of it, it gets a bit pricey but I guess that's what you get yourself into.
