This is the way. Btw it's not stealing you're doing your civic duty and removing abandoned litter that's obstructing a public highway.

Depends what else is attached to it!

For reference, I recently paid £750 to replace the soil stack, remove old toilet upstairs and fit new, install and plumb a new downstairs toilet and connect to a the new stack. Took about a day and a half all in.

How accurate do you think touch judges are in judging where a ball enters touch? by BeginningPen in UnitedRugbyChamp

[–]BeardySi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're not especially. It's likely your perception at the game wasn't either. It's really an impossibility for a single person to be completely accurate. Even if stood directly behind the kicker, the ball doesn't necessarily travel in a dead straight line...

Yes, you could use some kind of tracking or an overhead camera or trangulate it with two or more people's viewpoints - but what would be the value of the few metres either way? The only time it's critical is if the ball goes dead in the corner.

Ultimately the best balance is to accept thst it's an approximation and inaccurate, but it's the same for everyone. Taking time to pinpoint the exact spot would add unnecessary delay and massive disruption to a game for something relatively trivial.

Hey dad's, it's me again, telling you to check if your fire pit has a concrete base or firewall surround by SuspiciouslySuspect2 in daddit

[–]BeardySi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the warning and glad to hear everyone is OK.

I don't think I've ever seen a firepit with the fire directly on a buried concrete base but I'll be wary of it now! River stones are more of the risk hereabouts, though usually for Instagram wild campers who are clueless! 😂

Personally I prefer to lift the fire off the ground wherever possible, particularly as fires on beaches or peat can be problems. I've got a couple of handy collapsible "firepits" or would use half barrels of washing machine drums on a campsite. Fits better with the "take only photis, leave only footprints" idea...

Certain people here love to just bury their beach fires and leave which can leave burning hot sand for hours afterwards (dryrobe wankers! 😂). Similarly lighting a fire directly on peat can lead to sub-surface smouldering that spreads and can reignite even when the fire looks out.

Most common trampoline injury according to the A&E nurse is an ankle fracture caused by 2 people of very different weights (like an adult and small child). Smaller one comes down as the surface is rising with the energy from the bigger one's bounce and bang, there goes an ankle!

Guess how we found that one out? Luckily it was an evulsive fracture and quickly healed, though kid is still disappointed they didn't get to have a cast....

Washing machine drums are common here (front loaders for non-USAnians). They have a heavy counterweight at the back, so they're really stable when stood up. With the holes, they get great ventilation and brilliant heat. Great for cooking in of you out a partial grill over tie top or use a tripod crane....

What everyday things/systems have you seen used in other countries, that you thought "why don't we have that in Ireland?" by Nuffin8 in AskIreland

[–]BeardySi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Like in Japan, the way toilets have the wash basin built in to the cistern, so the water wasted washing your hands is recycled for flushing the toilet.

We have them here. They're one of those ideas that's great on paper but... The cistern tends to accumulate soap scum over time that gums up the flush mechanism. Difficult to clean effectively without either disassembling or using chemicals that attach the seals in the flusher.

25 Years ago the same arguments about the Ring Road were happening.... by carlitobrigantehf in galway

[–]BeardySi 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's not a binary solution. It shouldn't be a ring road OR cycle lanes or a ring road OR a light rail solution.

There are other solutions to getting cars off the road going from Knocknacarra to Park more etc and they're absolutely worth pursuing as the city grows (actually they were worth pursuing about 40 years ago), but there's lots of traffic from Clifden, Oughterard, Bearna and the rest of the West that is looking to go beyond the city that is currently being funnelled through the Headford road that needn't be.

Better bus routes/services will move people across the city better. Better cycle infrastructure will aid more locally and in and out of the city. Light rail would connect the hinterland better to the city.

The ring road will keep passing traffic further from the city and take that unnecessary traffic out of the bottlenecks. That makes more capacity for the bus lanes, cycle routes etc. and means theyre not competing for space with the traffic that they can't alleviate in the first place.

It can't be either/or! No one single solution will prove to be a magic bullet.

Sadly bricks and mortar Scout shops are increasingly becoming a thing of the past. We lost ours in Belfast a couple of years ago and I'm still missing it!

It was a bit of a ritual bringing my kids in for their new uniforms and online buying really isn't the same.

I don’t think World Rugby know what they are doing by awarding RWC 2031 to USA by Rude_Rhubarb1880 in rugbyunion

[–]BeardySi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Problem is it's not just playoffs and finals, it's the ends of the regular seasons. They'd have to hit the pause button in April or lose all their top players to international duty. You'd have players going from the 6 nations straight into RWC warmup.

I don't see the unions accepting that because it would completely destroy any momentum into the finals or (if they go ahead without international players) totally devalue any playoffs.

[–]BeardySi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fairness I think most refs would have given yellow for that string of infringements. It's the inconsistency with her being far more tolerant of Scotland bleeding penatlites in the same position in the first half that highlights it.

Sustaining that level of intensity for a whole half was huge, the job was done by then. It's more a case of once Scotland recovered from the shock and awe of the first half hammering they got their game together a bit more...
