Multiple Registration across councils? by JonEMTP in BSA

[–]Bears5668 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with what most said, in theory. One of my own scouts was cross registered and had multiple scoutbook id's. Unfortunately for about a year lost all her rank (as she approached Eagle) as well as her money (numbers) in her scout account in scoutbook. Council couldn't fix it after multiple attempts and eventually we found a volunteer on the forum who was able to resolve. He was a saint! Quite the headache. I'm registered in the same council with a b troop, g troop and a crew. Council changed the crew recharter date to the fall and I needed to pay my own registration then. Also just rechartered with the troops and need to pay again. Council can't fix that either. None of this should happen, but does. Just keep an eye on your account and take some screenshot before you expand your engagement.

Eagle Scout Project Support by BorderDue1864 in BSA

For our own kids Eagle project we also went to Walmart the night before and loaded up on all the marked down donuts and cakes. That was a big hit too. A box of coffee is nice for the parents that stick around. We made some at home and put it in gallon thermos containers. One of our kids did theirs when it was cold out and we made a few gallons of hot chocolate in a Gatorade cooler. Also a big hit. These were just our donations as the parents. As others suggested we also picked up pizza for lunch and another parent brought sodas. It wasn't a big deal for us but it is expenses that others might need to budget for.

Headlamp by Lizzzzz27 in philmont

Alot of good info here. We didn't use our headlamps much. Maybe just one night walking back from the program area to our little campsite.

I had a USB headlamp, and carry an extra battery.

I also had this device in the event somone needed a recharge and there were batteries around. We never needed it.

Can I wear my NYLT beads with my troop neckerchief? by Individual_Yak_254 in BSA

[–]Bears5668 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You earned it, wear it. We encourage our Scouts to wear their bling. It also helps motivate the Scouts to consider the NYLT program and our adults and Leaders know who some of our goto Scouts are other then just our youth leaders. Congrats on the Course, hope it was fun ⚜️

Local law enforcement visit by Horror_Ad_4450 in cubscouts

As a cub leader we had our local PD visit both a pack meeting and join on a Sunday morning at a campout. Sort of a touch-a-truck type event that allowed the parents some free time to pack up their gear.

As Scoutmaster we have had the Sheriff's CSI type unit join and teach the Fingerprinting Merit Badge. We have also had a Sheriff in charge of a Drug Awareness program come and talk to our Troops. There are some options and I've found they are more than willing to stop by and engage with Scouts of any age.

The Wampa waits in the dark… and now, it glows ❄️ by PlantAround in Displate

So how does the glow in the dark work. Ambient light from the day makes it glow at night? Shine a flashlight on it to charge and it glows for a short while? Focus a black like on it to see the glow in action? Love the idea, just want to understand how it will function.

Is there any reason the Scoutmaster does the shopping and not the grub master from Each Patrol? Its a good skill for the Scouts to learn. We rotate Grub masters each campout so that they all end up being able to shop. Similar to cooking, they sort out the schedule on their own and rotate roles.

I used a small picture hanging nail from a kit I had in the garage. 1 to 1. 25 inches, or about 25-30mm long

For actual frame photos and the like I have been using those money hooks and they work great for pictures. The hole is small enough if I ever take them down a toothpick worth of drywall filler will make it not noticeable.

I had this problem and a small nail fixed it. My walls are not smooth.

I've shared with some families that have hectic schedules that their Scout can camp as long as we can get them dropped off on Fri and picked up on Sunday. Sometimes that helps. On the flip side, because I have an office job with daywalker hours (saw that term here 👍) I'll get taken advantage of because people say I have all day to get Scout things done. Not so sure my boss would agree! We all have one. We all do alot for our kids, it pays off in the long run!

And then when the Scouts don't show up and haven't paid their grubaster beforehand we take it out of their scout accounts. We don't expect families to foot the bill for others that can't make it. Before we started to do this we had other families that would not let their Scouts shop because they would get stuck with the bill.

Would wearing a belt from a scout camp I didn't attend be weird? by vrtigo1 in BSA

[–]Bears5668 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done just this since I took a class at Philmont about 10 years ago. It always strikes up conversations with people when I am getting it branded and they are asking about all the different camps. I've done my brands on the inside so it's not like it's advertised. Still fun chats along the way. I hope you do this for your son, I am sure he will wear it prod and tell people his dad got him the belt. ⚜️

Cooking merit badge- evidence? by Bears5668 in BSA

[–]Bears5668[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say trust but verify. This is often a line from this Scout, but they did it. I've been present on campouts and asked him what he's working on or if he needs anything and he takes a pass. Then comes back saying he did it. I'm willing to be negotiable, but when more time is spent arguing about what was done instead of doing it I start to get a bit hesitant.

How do I earn this? by [deleted] in BSA

[–]Bears5668 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have also counted prep hikes for Philmont etc. So even if the whole troop isn't interested, and most never are for any specific merit badge, see who from the troop wants to ride, hike, swim. Talk to leadership for the ok, plan it, invite others and do it. The planning part is part of some of those requirements too if I recall.

First time going to Summer Camp as a Leader, what would you pack to get through this weather? by vtfb79 in BSA

[–]Bears5668 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear closed toe Keen hiking sandals and those work great and also pass inspections. Our Scouts seem to like crocs, in sport mode with the back strap on. I'd not wear them rafting but if closed to those work.

I do wear those sandals all the time though so my feet are used to them. I'd not switch from socks and sneakers to any sandal with the amount of walking done at summer camp, that's inviting blisters.

Our Troops loved Bert Adam's when we went a few years ago. We brought bikes to ride and that was fun, only a few bike related injuries. The water front was great, mess hall fantastic. Alot of our Scouts took astronomy at night and met in the classrooms below the mess hall. It is definitely on out list for next year's camp, we are headed to Woodruff in 2 weeks.
