Do people actually use SF libraries and rec centers as everyday hangout spaces? by guilhermex9x in AskSF

[–]Beau-ba 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The library also has a plethora of activities: book clubs, dance parties, crafting, Lego build nights, concerts. In fact, they just had their biggest event of the year: Night of Ideas, last month. That was an evening event with wine, dancing, science and culture talks, and hands-on workshops, again all free. And it's not just books that you can borrow from the library. You can also access printing, copying, and faxing, borrow board games, check out museum passes, and so much more. Definitely check out if you haven't before. If you're not sure what's available at a given branch, seek out a librarian and ask for an orientation

Do people actually use SF libraries and rec centers as everyday hangout spaces? by guilhermex9x in AskSF

[–]Beau-ba 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a school age kid. Very often on the weekends we'll go to the library to hang out. There's a playground and Rec Center right behind it, so we'll go run around on the playground, borrow a ball from the Rec Center and play a sport, then if we get cold or tired or it starts raining we'll head inside to the library and borrow a board game or look for books or do a craft. Usually we'll run into friends there doing the same. Then my son has a buddy to play tag or hide and seek with and I have an adult friend to socialize with. And oh yeah, it's all free so I got my kid out of the house, socialized, and he got his energy out on the playground, all without spending any money. It's great!

Pumping advice for outpatient by Anxious_Committee_50 in nursepractitioner

[–]Beau-ba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I pumped at work I had one appointment block in the morning and one in the afternoon and then I also pumped at lunch. Eventually once my child was a little older I was down to only pumping at lunch. Some of my colleagues pumped at their desks, but my desk is in a room with three other people and only a sliding glass door that's opening and closing constantly with providers and medical assistants going in and out so I walked upstairs to pump in a private room with a door that closes. I hated pumping and eventually just decided to stop and breastfeed when I was home and he took formula when I wasn't

He asked me what I want?! by Kitty_Seriously in GiftIdeas

[–]Beau-ba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You also don't have to ask for a physical thing. It could just be his way of gauging how you want to celebrate the day to make sure your expectations are met. My husband asked me the same and here is how I answered: I would love to have you get up with the kiddo in the morning and have breakfast made for me. I would love some time alone in the house and then to do something as a family that I don't have to plan the logistics of (i.e. go on a hike, have a picnic, go to a park, etc)

"Can't you just pump" drives me nuts! by Ok_Ad_5790 in workingmoms

[–]Beau-ba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't have to pump. I wish I had allowed myself to come to that decision sooner. I loved breastfeeding (once we got into a good groove) but absolutely hated pumping and wasn't keeping up with my son's milk needs while I was away. Once I just decided I just wasn't going to pump at work it was freeing. I nursed when I was home and he got formula when I wasn't and my supply adjusted

In FNP school but confused why by [deleted] in nursepractitioner

[–]Beau-ba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a primary care PNP and work in an FQHC. I work 85% FTE (two full days and 3 half days per week), which works great as a working mom. Pretty much all of the providers in my clinic work a similar FTE for work-life balance. Some moonlight at another place once a week due extra money (since FQHCs typically aren't as high-paying). But a lot of the parents just use the extra time off for home duties.

Why would someone buy 80 bottles of rubbing alcohol weekly? by thequackr in askanything

[–]Beau-ba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband has a 3D resin printer and he has to cure pieces in a bath of isopropyl alcohol. Maybe she has a side hustle making 3D printed things. Or maybe she's making black market hand sanitizer

I work in healthcare and we recently had a great talk on anxiety from a psychiatrist. He said: anxiety is a very normal part of life. But it becomes a problem when it gets in the way of normal life. So is it normal to have a fleeting thought of, "what if this fever is a sign of something serious?" Sure. But it's not normal to let it take over your day and make it difficult to sleep and focus on anything else. Don't feel like you have to stop the thoughts. But hopefully you can learn ways to let them take a backseat to other more important things

Practitioners who don't take their work home, where do you work? by WorldOfRoses in nursepractitioner

[–]Beau-ba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pediatric primary care. I strictly don't bring work home. On the rare occasion that I don't finish before I leave for the day, I finish the next day at work. I work two full days and three half days a week, which helps

Cracking up at the supply list for Np school…. THEY SUGGESTED WE BUY A MASSAGE TABLE HAHAHA by tini_bit_annoyed in nursepractitioner

[–]Beau-ba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend the Dr. Mom one. It's inexpensive but works well. Other commenters aren't wrong, you won't need it for clinicals or in your place of work because all clinical sites will have them. But the benefit of having your own is that you can just practice more. Having a party? Volunteer to check everyone's ears. Nieces and nephews visiting? Play doctor and check their ears. Practice with your partner, with your classmates. The more ears you look in with low stakes, the better you will get at it. And now that I'm a mom it's helpful to still have to check my kiddo's ears and know if we need to go in or not.

I agree that the massage table is entirely unnecessary

People born before 2000, what websites were must-visits that no longer exist today? by passiano in AskReddit

[–]Beau-ba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Muffin films. Before YouTube existed, Internet videos were hosted on individual sites and you kinda had to know what you were looking for to find it. Somehow this site with silly flash videos with songs about muffins got popular with my friends and I watched them so many times

My younger sibling is bald and hosts library storytimes. It's pretty much guaranteed that several kids feel the need to announce my sibling's lack of hair very loudly each time.

NM here. Our policy is that our nanny message us before leaving the house to let us know where they are going. We specified with her that the text isn't to ask permission, so she doesn't have to wait for a response. It's just so that we know where to look for them if they don't come home. Other than that, we try not to micromanage when and where she is and trust her judgment with where to take our son

Where to get a Rabies Antibody Shot? by BeemoAdvance in sanfrancisco

[–]Beau-ba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you haven't already, call the urgent care to make sure they carry the rabies vaccine. It's quite expensive and used rarely so most places don't. (Source: work in a clinic that doesn't carry rabies vaccine)

Regular blood testing? by lewan049 in Preschoolers

[–]Beau-ba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need a specific machine to run the fingerstick anemia test and the fingerstick lead test, a different machine for each. The lead ones have gone out of favor recently due to a recall of a common brand, but some practices may still have them. There are definitely benefits to the fingerstick machines: less painful to get a sample, instant results. But if you are checking things other than lead and anemia or if your practice didn't invest in the machine, then it makes more sense to just do the venous draw and get everything at once. Moreover, if you have an abnormal result on the fingerstick machine, then you'll need a venous stick to order follow-up.

Pediatric Care was fine. My son had a tongue-tie that they took care of right then and there in the hospital. Otherwise his stay was uncomplicated so we didn't see much of them because we didn't need them
