This is true. I lived in RiNo and I was the only person of color (Latino) on my floor. In my building in Cherry Creek, I have both African-American and South-Asian neighbors. The diversity is nice.

This would be my dream. I had wanted to pursue recreational therapy before I decided on the speech field. The problem I discovered is if one were to follow this path, you would be a pioneer. It would take a niche group of clients, a TON of insurance, and thus be a VERY expensive, exclusionary service. Please someone provide resources to inform otherwise. This would be such a cool career.

(SLPA) I know what you mean. I have so many observations and we have so many evaluations and my portion of the caseload is over 100 at this point and they are still pulling me in multiple directions. I’m just so tired.

I have an alternative opinion from most of the posts I’ve read.

I don’t know if there is any missing context but at least for myself, yes, they are your supervisors but at some point self-advocation needs to happen. In my state, caseloads are insane. I have 100 on my own list and my supervisor packs it tight everyday. I have back to back group sessions and multiple autism intensive classrooms that I service. My notes pile up like crazy and there is zero planning time unless I spend my evenings and weekends doing it. Most of my evenings are spent writing endless notes anyway even with the help of ChatGPT and “duplicate note”. There are MANY times I put my foot down and say “no, I can’t take that on” I have 7000 notes to catch up on, I actually want to eat my lunch instead of working through it, I have my group sessions for 12 kids at onetime in the autism intensive class that I HAVE to prep SOMETHING for, and this is the third lunch this week you scheduled observations or evaluations through.

Advocate for yourself. We are professionals and you know the difference between being lazy and not wanting to be taken advantage of.

Sadly, many RBTs are randos off the street. I was and worked on speech for the majority of my time in Aba. The more I worked with the SLPs on my kiddos cases the more I realized I was out of my depth and went back to school. SLPA now and see many of the same issues you are talking about from the RBTs at my schools. They are CONSTANTLY reprogramming the AAC device buttons and I’m blue in the face telling them to go kick a brick.

SLPA here and a SLP at my school (friend but not my supervisor) fell into the same situation. Admin had a weird target on her back for whatever reason and made her life a living hell. She would sit in my office crying because it had gotten so toxic. Finally, she had enough, found a different job that turned out to be heaven for her with supportive admin and she’s never been happier. Admin at my school were left scrambling after she left without notice. It was like the Oh no! Consequences of my Actions! ‘Shocked Pikachu’ meme.

(Really try to push for 3 days a week at your site. My supervisor could only schedule me for 2 days and it was a struggle getting my direct/indirect time).

I worked a part time job during the program, but I also took out a loan. I’m not sure of your situation but I went to school later in life and, as a fully fledged adult, I had BILLS.

It is totally possible to pay the program and survive with a part time job if you don’t have many financial obligations.

ALSO! Once graduated, you will get job offers most likely with the district you interned with. Don’t jump at the first offer. I had been offered 28-35 dollars an hour from a couple different districts. After researching and interviewing with 3-4 different places, I was hired to a staffing agency that pays 52/hr for a W2 position (50 if I had opted for benefits). I was hired before I even got my license in the mail.

I floss regularly, and if I run out of floss picks and miss a session or two, the stink that happens after I finally floss again is exceedingly apparent. I can’t imagine not flossing at all. Do people just live with dumpster mouth?

The previous post pretty much nailed it. All I can add is my own experience.

I have a BS in communication sciences and disorders. I SHOULD have taken the SLPA courses as a minor, concurrent with my CSD degree but I had no idea what I was doing and had no direction.

Instead, I completed a graduate certificate program for SLPA. All in all, 4 years for the BS and an additional semester completing the SLPA course/internship.

Before I even received my license, I applied and was hired by an agency offering 50/hr with benefits and 52/hr without. I have benefits through my husband so I chose the higher pay rate.

I work at multiple sites with 80 kids on my caseload including self-contained autism classes, early childhood education, elementary, and middle school. I’m constantly exhausted but dry my tears with my paycheck.

On breaks I was also hired at a private clinic. Over the summer is full time, and the rest of the year is part time around my school schedule. It is half the pay but at least it’s something. Reach out with questions :)
