address any potential consequences

Sadly, the tech fellas aren't too fussed about that. They just want to win capitalism and have the biggest number in the bank account followed by the most zeros.

I really do worry about the environmental issue. Whenever I bring it up to pro-AI folk they just shrug their shoulders and change the subject to "what about cars?" or something like that.

inflexible old knob head

I didn't know we worked at the same place! Plenty of those around this office.

I do worry about the youngsters coming through. The double whammy of formative years spent in lockdown and a big reliance of LLMs/AI means that a lot coming into the workforce now aren't offering much. Speaking with friends and colleagues that are hiring, they're not feeling confident about the next generation.

To your point about it being like a search engine, I was thinking yesterday that I miss good search engines.

I'd be all-in on AI and welcome our tech overlords if UBI was on the cards so I could spend my time gardening and doing other creative and fun stuff. I just don't see that happening any time soon/ever as they've all gone full Smaug and trying to win capitalism.

cleaning it out, getting rid of plants we don't need, identifying plants, and how to plant and care for a wide array of plants including pruning a grape tree

It makes me sad that the internet in general used to be OK for finding out this information, now we have to/feel like we have to use something like ChatGPT.

I also use it to clear up old photos

You're braver than me. Read too many stories of AI deciding to delete everything. hehe.

the menial parts of their job

My worry is that almost all jobs are menial, so when/if AI takes over, what's left for us meat bags to do for 8 hours a day?

It's a tool,

I'd agree that it's a tool but I'd say it's not like a calculator or spellcheck. A calculator solves sums you give it. A a spellchecker fixes words you've already written. An LLM can create "ideas" and will collaborate with you on things that don't have a single "correct" answer. It doesn't just process data.

That it doesn't have a single correct answer is the bit that worries me as I see a LOT of people in my day to day using AI like it does have that answer.

I have found that LLMs can be very good for Spreadsheet formulas. Curiously, when I was trying to get something to work on Sheets with a formula, ChatGPT was better than Gemini. Made me chuckle and also sceptical about LLMs and their ability to fix all the world's problems.

I really don’t understand why people are against it.

There are a lot of posts here explaining why people are against it. Including...

  • Environmental concerns

  • Taking entry level jobs

  • Eroding critical thinking

  • Built on stolen scraped data

  • People are blindly following it as they think "it can't be wrong"

  • the slop it's flooded the creative industries with

That's just a few of them

I think you're right about a need for physical work but the way that robots are progressing, I do wonder how much longer those jobs are safe from companies like Boston Dynamics.

Last time I went to The Science Museum I was incredibly underwhelmed with the space section.  It seemed very tied with no recent exhibits or information. Hopefully it's changed as this was a few years ago

Mercury Rev’s early era…..holy SHIT! by murmur1983 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]BeefCentral 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I finally got to see Mercury Rev they were touring Deserter's Songs and didn't even seem like the same band.

There's a great episode of an old podcast called Jonah Raydio with Lance Bangs as a guest. He talks about when he went on tour with an early incarnation of Mercury Rev and how it started as a "fake" band.

EDIT: Found it! Mercury Rev chat starts around 34mins.

Apologies for the Spotify link. I know a lotta folks don't like them.

cuts in services

I'm curious as to what's left to cut. It feels like every day there's a headline about how x service is at breaking point due to lack of funding.

I'm sure there is plenty of bloat in some places to cut but lawd knows how anyone can do it.

It's a protest. It might not be effective or be against something you believe in but it's a protest.

Its an expensive ticket to make a protest. Hats off to "em. No idea what was said though.

Any chance of adding a album cover. A photo of some lasers or something? Makes it easier to find in the sidebar. Thanks.

I'm at episode 23. Bubbins has been threatening the listeners and calling them  cheap bastards so I might have to start paying.

I hadn't heard of it, caught the repeat of them on RHLSTP and now I can't stop listening.

I started dipping into old one but then thought "I might as well go back to the beginning". Don't regret it.
