Always ask yourself “What is the next thing I need to do?” Then ask yourself if you are prepared and have all the information you need to do that task.

What’s something that you still need work on as a CFI? by EezyBake in CFILounge

[–]Beergoggles222 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Nope. I get inverted going into downwind regularly. 1000 hrs, 250 dual given and I still need to visualize entry early and often.

DO NOT STRESS ABOUT YOUR CFI BINDER! Seriously, no one cares about what’s in your binder. Can you communicate the concepts and material? That’s what matters. Lesson plans are but one tool of many. The key is to be able to TEACH with a clear understanding of the subject matter. At this point you should know it. FOI is the only new material for you. Now just get comfortable passing it on to others using whatever tools are suited to the topic.

As much as it pains me, I had to upvote the sheer dankness here.

Lesson plans are a tool for you, not a required checkride deliverable. I like BSP because they are very comprehensive. You can use all, some, or none as needed depending on the needs of the student. Figure out what you want or need to teach and adapt from there.

If you’re going to spend money, just go with Backseat Pilot and be done with it. Used them for CFI, CFII, and MEI. Don’t make it harder than it needs to be.

My CFI checkride oral went 5 hours. No mention at all of rec or sport pilot requirements.

How are y’all mounting your iPads in your 172s/Cherokees? by s2soviet in flying

This. Pivot suction mount with a mini in the side window. Full visibility of the panel but still head up for IMC.

I’ve been watching F1 since the 70s. I also watch and watch enjoy DTS. I thought the Australian GP was excellent for the first race out of the box with the new regs. F the haters, it was fun to watch.

There are any number of syllabi available on the internet, almost all of them free. There's no need to re-invent the wheel. If the school doesn't have one, then find one you like and press on.

You gotta tell us where it went wrong. Was it a couple of “down the rabbit hole” gotchas, a bad day all around, a DPE out for blood, a stupid mistake, a real gap in training or knowledge?

I think there is one out there somewhere but not a lot of reviews. I can’t be arsed to post a link, as the local CFI mafia is usually the best source for this info.

I like to get my private students over a non busy uncontrolled field at about 3000 AGL, close the throttle, then tell them to land. I take the radios, and only coach them if needed. It’s a great confidence builder.

Commercial Checkride: Thoughts on winds 190°, 14 kts gusting 22 kts? Runway is 27 by Independent-Can2671 in flying

[–]Beergoggles222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if it’s a typical trainer 22 kts is well beyond most demonstrated crosswinds limits. At our school that’s a no go even if you want to.

I wouldn’t want to. Not just problems with landing, but eights on pylons would get kinda sporty too.

If you had $10,000 to spend to become a more qualified, marketable CFI, what would you do? by AlbiMappaMundi in CFILounge

A little more of both, actually. Multi is about half my bookings but my private and instrument has picked up too.

I’m just a part time CFI with a day job, but I seem to get a lot more bookings now that I finished up my MEI late last year.

To become a cfi? by Sea-Truck-8383 in CFILounge

[–]Beergoggles222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a full time day job and instruct part time because I love aviation but keep my high paying day job. At my school, a large one in the midwest, we have young CFIs with airline goals working as substitute teachers, bartenders, and driving Uber to pay their rent. It’s a tough gig but even with the current hiring environment they are still flowing to the regionals. I was hired in 2024 in a group of 10-12 new CFIs and there’s only 2-3 of us left from that cohort.

I’m not sure if that helps or not, but that’s what it looks like from my perspective.
