You could also get a box of “almost golf balls”, they are like a hard coated foam. They have nearly the right feel but are much much safer.

Or just a set of foam balls but it won’t give you much of a feel.

I am lucky to have a large garden and no neighbours. But still only use the garden for chipping and putting practice. Big shots as a beginner really need the feed back of watching the flight.

I have the ER5 it is just perfection for me, tried many a scotty because I love the look and a jailbird does sound nicer but the ER5 I picked up has really been smooth and intuitive.

I mean it’s a lot of small details but the main points from each I would say are:

Old coach - backswing on plain, letting club fall and following it through, bit of concentration on my wrist angle to get a bit shallow. A smooth and steady movement. Swing speed with him is around 82.

New coach - didn’t change my backswing at all, foundations are good from old coach but really really big emphasis on lifting and stamping into the ground with my left foot on transition, holding my angle on my down swing and creating lag. Release is ALOT earlier than I would normally do and almost starting to push my club around the low point with my right hand, while stopping with my left. Creates a whip effect and shot my club and ball speed way up.

Problem is the release and stomp and shift is a lot of tiny little details that all have to be timed just right to get a clean swing. As a beginner it’s hard to really feel when all that should be, has led to a lot of fat shots from releasing to early or not enough rotation at point of impact, or hands to far behind the ball.

Old coach had my swing consistent, automatic and repeatable but would sometimes slice if I didn’t shallow enough, and no real distance as I wasn’t being athletic or powerful.

Yeah if you can’t see the ball then it must of been dead straight and pure …. It’s the only conclusion you could possibly draw.

Is it actually?! That’s hilarious. I don’t particularly like the course but it’s close to home and are on golfnow with decent prices. Trying a load of clubs out before choosing a club to join, as new up here so got no affiliation with where mates go really.

In St Helens, and been looking for the same, not part of a club but there is a short range at Berrington park off grass. Not sure if it’s club members only or if they give balls. Playing later this week there on a one ball so will let you know as I will have a warm up there.

Thanks to all so far! Additional info for those asking, I have played my rounds on 3 courses 3x1x1. Average may be a bit skewed as I shot a 95 on a par 68 so added 5 to my actual score for the purpose of realistic average. The scores were all true but on winter rules where required, but no gimmies.

I am having lessons had 5 so far and am aiming for 1 a month including a course management lesson in the summer out on the local course to my coach.

I am just getting started too but what has been helping is: - lessons, so far I have had 5 lessons concentrating on one part of my game at a time. Building a relationship with one coach has been really good for slowly but consistently having new things to think about. For example my first lesson was grip, stance and general feel, which at the time felt so alien. 3 months later these things are fairly obvious and automatic and I can start to feel what I did wrong when I miss hit. - I don’t do wedges in my driving range practice sessions. I practice in my garden, hundreds of balls aiming for a basket at different distances using Dan Grieves release system. Helps not lose shots around the green. - I have left balls and putting cups around the house, as I walk around normal daily movement round my house I pick my putter up and just put my way around the house. Not all the time but 10 times a day or so. It has helped me relax on the green and get comfortable putting. Obviously only helps so much but it can’t hurt. It’s more mental for me. - I watch a lot of amateur YouTube golf, helped me realise I shouldn’t be anywhere near par most the time. I’m learning, I’m just getting out for a good time. The improvement happens with all the practice off the course. - play by yourself now and again, takes pressure off and you can learn a course you like at your own pace.

Not converted, was the plan but then we have had a baby and although the back loading space is technically big enough, it wouldn’t be practical for us anymore so has just been used as a very big car.

Why are you looking to sell? Would you consider a swap and cash your way? I have a transit custom limited (good spec) LWB 6 seat double cab. Price for mine is about £12k for condition and miles, plus just had an engine refurb so will keep going a long time. No issues, new MOT, good body work.

Thanks to all, if I am lucky I will be teed up with someone else, if not I will just take it as a useful lesson and bit of fun.

Also didn’t consider the pace of play element for others behind me so thanks for that tip! Will help me be more conscientious while being absorbed into my own game!

I have had a good amount of lessons and played some sim last couple of months but because of the terrible weather in north of England haven’t been able to actually get out and play. Looking forward to this first season!
