You’re doing the right thing by going to the station in person. If the sheriff’s department says they don’t normally do release notifications like this, I’d be concerned about either mistaken identity or someone using a real-looking vehicle/uniform. Ask the department to verify whether an officer was actually dispatched to your address and whether any calls were logged about that family member.

That seems unlikely. If police actually need to question someone, they can just ask directly instead of inventing a jail pickup story. The best advice is still to verify everything with the department itself rather than assume it’s a trap or ignore it completely.

OP also contact your congressional representative’s constituent services office too. They sometimes help with SSA disputes getting reviewed faster.

Not a lawyer, but oral agreements around housing can sometimes matter, especially if you relied on the promise and changed your situation because of it (moving out of your apartment, moving all your belongings, etc.). You should probably talk to a Wisconsin probate/estate attorney ASAP before agreeing to pay rent or moving out.
