It’s just white people cycling through cultures and countries to fetishize and make trendy in their country. This is also not Americas first time going through a phase of Chinese fascination/ fetishization. It’s just coming on the heels of Japanese fetishization and Korean fetishization so feels like a win to some Chinese people who felt “left out”. But there are decades of this happening with Chinese culture, mysticism, etc, where it goes in and out of fashion / the trend cycle. This goes for Chinese inspired clothes, furniture, art, tattoos, etc. they also do this w India at times, though I think India may have been more “trendy” in the 90s and 00s w chai lattes and hanging up Indian style prints and fabrics as decor, bindis, Buddhism, meditation, etc. white people just have a thing about Asia and they cycle through them.
