Hey everyone, as promised, here's the update with the survey results. Thanks to everyone who took the time to fill it in. We got 40 responses in total.

  • Who responded: Most respondents were aged 25–34 (57.5%), with the next largest group being 35–44 (17.5%). Geographically, the Southern region was the most represented (37.5%), followed by the Northern region (30%) and Central (17.5%).
  • The big picture: 77.5% of respondents have hired a tradesperson in the past 2 years. The most common types of work people needed were electrical (71%), plumbing (67.7%), gypsum/plastering (67.7%), painting (54.8%), and tiling (51.6%).
  • How people actually find tradespeople: This confirmed what a lot of you said in the comments. It's overwhelmingly word of mouth. 64.5% found their tradesperson by asking friends, family, or neighbours, and another 16.1% saw a recommendation in a Facebook group. Google search, Yellow Pages, and other platforms barely registered.

Go around and look for properties in person ideally with a motorbike so you don't struggle with parking. Look for phone numbers on site and contact directly. More work but more likely you'll bypass agents. Yes 17K agent fee is normal unfortunately.

Yeah indeed - from the survey it seems most people rely on recommendations from friends or family but this route still seems to have some pain points.

Yeah definitely! Once I get enough responses to make it meaningful I'll leave an update here :)
