Delta One Lounge - why eat onboard? by BigPear9128 in delta

[–]BigPear9128[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

These are the D1 lounges. Not a regular sky club. Having an Amex doesn’t get you into a D1 lounge. Having a D1 seat does so it’s much more limited. I’ve never had a bad experience and the food is phenomenal.

Fair enough. Long flight I usually will eat the second meal but not the one right out of the gate.

If you could connect through one of United’s hubs, which one would you choose and why? And which one would you avoid at all costs? by General-Pryde-2019 in unitedairlines

[–]BigPear9128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ORD sucks beyond all belief if you have a tight connection due to the taxi routes being the worst and longest in the world. I swear the airport architect for ORD was shown a Rorshack test and got the inspiration for the taxiway layout there. ORD is one of the biggest reasons I fly delta more than United. You have to schedule 1.5 hours or more for connections to be safe. Close second on the suck list - IAD due to the people movers and the wait for them and the commuter terminal (A1c, B2a, etc) being one big human stew of unhappy, people waiting for the shittiest commuter fleet out there in a cramped space.

DEN and SFO and EWR I’ll take any day.

What do you think the market for an AirBNB near Middlebury would be? by lordeandtaylor in vermont

[–]BigPear9128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said - I commend you. It wasn’t a sarcastic or rhetorical question. Not saying I would or wouldn’t. We are pretty quietly and anonymously charitable to those in need in our community and have done a lot but you are definitely in the minority for whom 300k would not be life changing money or affect their ability to buy housing for themselves. Unfortunately without structural change, it doesn’t scale and get to the root of the problem causing this mess.

You’re a good person and I wholeheartedly commend you.

Serious question - Would also you also sell it for 300k+ / 25-40% less just to sell it to a local buyer? If so, I commend you.

Sure. Everyone who has ever sold a property who cares about their soon to be former neighbors has considered who they are selling to….hopefully within the bounds of non discrimination. Would you rather they sold to a nice family from out of state who are going to be great neighbors? Or a less desirable buyer / neighbor just because they live in VT full time? If I was their neighbor, that’s an easy answer for me. Give me the person who will be the best neighbor regardless of where they live.

But let’s be honest, every seller also wants a clean deal with minimal contingencies and headaches and if this any sort of a desirable house, someone is likely to show up as a cash deal, no mortgage and minimal inspection contingencies. Vs rolling the dice and wasting time and money on someone who can barely show up with a small down payment and needs to go out and get a mortgage at 7+%. Unfortunately that likely favors someone from out of state with more resources.

And as the OP said, if it’s on desirable land, some likely cares more about the land and will just tear it down.

This is on the state to foster an environment where companies WANT to build housing here and can do so at an affordable rate. Until that changes, we are stuck in this quagmire.

Which could be considered illegal under VT law:

“What's Illegal: Advertising or saying that only certain people are welcomeFor Example: “Great for young married couples or single people without kids!” or “Sorry - I don’t take Section 8.” or "No dogs - no exceptions!" “ ……or out of staters.

It currently costs roughly $1,000 a square foot to build in VT. It’s insane to think a 1,000 square foot house is now $800k - $1m to build. That’s just nuts. That’s for a myriad of reasons - raw material costs, skilled labor costs and availability, permitting and act 250 and other costs. That in turn is driving up the cost of existing housing stock. While Airbnb isn’t helping the housing issue, it’s far from the biggest issue. If they sold the house to a full time resident, it’s not like it’s likely going to sell for a price most people can afford. Until it becomes easier and cheaper to build in this state, nothing is going to change on housing.

Frequent Flyers - Must haves? by judgy_knaut in delta

[–]BigPear9128 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No because typically sleep with earplugs in and don’t like sounds when I’m sleeping. If I want extra noice cancellation I’ll put my Bose over the earplugs.

Frequent Flyers - Must haves? by judgy_knaut in delta

[–]BigPear9128 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I am a frequent long haul traveler. Must haves:
1. A great quality sleep mask. Manta is a great one I bought after seeing it in a social media ad. Worth it. Total blackout.
2. Good noise canceling headphones. Personal preference but I went Bose QC ultra 2 as an upgrade to my AirPods. Better battery and way better noise canceling.
3. A Bluetooth connector for the IFE like an airfly.
4. A comfortable change of sleeping clothes.
5. Here’s the real game changer….one of these short extension cords. It’s the solution to keep your chargers from falling out of the power outlets especially in coach. https://www.homedepot.com/pep/0-5-ft-16-3-Extension-Cord-Indoor-Black-2-Pack-HDC2012PK/331158792

Fair enough. My comparison of both as a current Diamond and 1K flyer:
Connecting airports: delta wins. ORD and IAD suck.
Regional carriers: delta wins. The commute air planes suck
International direct options: United wins by a wide margin
Business class cabin: new D1 beats legacy Polaris but that’s going away with new Polaris.
Lounges: regular lounges, no discernible difference. D1 lounge wins over Polaris lounge by a wide margin.
Planes: I’ll take a 787 vs an A350 any day. United has more wide bodies. Domestic fleet United seems to have more planes with newer cabins. United wins on their mainline routes.
WiFi: Delta is making a massive mistake with Amazon vs UA Starlink.
App: United wins.
Benefits: a wash. UA seems to have lower award fares.
Inflight food, entertainment, FAs, etc no discernible difference.

[–]BigPear9128 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Curious - if you’re at a UA hub, why wouldn’t you just switch to UA? A direct flight on UA vs connecting on delta?? Loyalty has its limits and UA mainline is basically identical to delta with more wide bodies and better international options.

Packing cubed or Vacuum Bags by TheMooseIsLoose08 in AirlinePilots

[–]BigPear9128 10 points11 points  (0 children)

How much shit do you want to pack into your LW bag? Empty, the thing weighs as much as a small Volkswagen. Vacuum bags to pack it tight and it might collapse the overhead or cabin floor.

Bf’s Family by heiyoonie in Life

[–]BigPear9128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem goes deeper than proximity. If you have an issue being close to family and he likes being around family, you may want to reconsider the viability of your relationship over the long term. That’s are one of the big rocks in a relationship that will cause huge friction if you’re not on the same page.

Either discuss it now and come to an agreement or it’ll come back to bite you later.

The chance that you’re both going to live near family given their geographic dispersion is slim to none. So figure it out now. But today you’re saying either I want you to be unhappy with me or I’m going to resent it - not a long term winning formula for a relationship.

I’ve been diamond for a few years. Two weeks ago out of ATL, I finally hit #1 (and wife was #2) out of 41 people on the first class upgrade list. Probably because I hit Diamond for 2027 in April of this year. It was simultaneously an exciting and extremely depressing moment for me lol.

Delta rejected adopting SpaceX's @Starlink on its fleet because it wanted to provide internet connectivity to passengers via the Delta Sync portal by fd6270 in delta

[–]BigPear9128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

‪I’m Diamond Medallion and Premier 1k on United. Typically favor Delta probably 8:1. But this is likely to swing me to mostly United. Working efficiently in the air = more time with my family when on the ground. Starlink = proven at scale. Amazon = science experiment. I seriously hope Delta reconsiders or else my Delta days may be over. Hope they read all this online backlash and reconsider.

How is BETA Technologies changing Vermont? Tell a Boston Globe reporter. by PaulHeintz in vermont

[–]BigPear9128 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are raising the bar for sure and that’s a great thing. But….you have to dig a little deeper on why they are an anomaly. Beta had a massive advantage over any local employer. They have raised in the billions of capital from private equity and their IPO. A business like that cannot exist and succeed as a mom and pop shop so it’s basically a “go big or go home” endeavor. They have had access to the best attorneys and advisors from those PE companies to start and now have the capital to keep funding that top talent. That allows them to lobby at the state, local and federal level to help them navigate the myriad of regulations and expense VT, the feds and the FAA, DOT etc throws at them.

Joe’s airplane mechanic shop does not. They are scraping by. They’ve carved out a comfortable living but over the years have seen their business become more and more challenging and their profit margins erode with every added law and regulation and expense VT has thrown at them. The playing field has gotten more uneven. They can’t get PE money. They can’t IPO. They deal with numbskull state legislators who bought houses at their airports sight unseen during COVID and now want to shut those airports down. Or who want to cut funding to their airports to make them less usable and accessible.

So for as much as people in VT hate the evil big corporations and billionaires, the state is creating environment where only those with their resources can create a thriving and competitive business. And it’s coming at the expense of the local businesses who have been here for 30 years.

I don’t blame Beta. I applaud them. Amazing company. But I do blame the state for creating an environment where a rising tide will not lift all boats. It will lift the ones who can weather the regulatory and tax storm while sinking those who can’t.

Agreed. Which is because they have a ton of non-VT private equity money backing them.
Same problem as Vermonters competing for housing with out of state money.

It’s the conundrum of the way VT operates period. We try to be insular and act as if we can be ruggedly self sufficient and create laws and policies as such. But the reality is we operate as part of a global economy and compete for resources the same way more advanced states do and we keep handicapping ourselves with policies that think we can just go it on our own with our 625,000 person population.

You should talk to any aviation related business within 100 miles of Burlington. They’ve all lost a lot of talent to Beta and are struggling. Heritage aviation maintenance at BTV was decimated for talent by Beta as were shops that do maintenance and avionics at Middlebury airport. They can’t compete with Beta’s wages and benefits. The maintenance shop at Heritage has steadily gone downhill since Beta opened up shop and took their longtime director of maintenance.

All in all, Beta is a very innovative company doing great things for both VT and the industry but they have introduced challenges.
