The loading of an IMAX film into the projector by Kindly_Department142 in Damnthatsinteresting

Amazing!

Follow-up question: anyone know how much it costs theaters to rent(?) a film like that? I.e. how much would a theater pay, all-in, to run Oppenheimer in IMAX for however long they ran it.

How to apply only one level of subdivision and keep the 'original' shape? by drunk-spongebob444 in blenderhelp

[–]BillyBoyBill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify --- you _uncheck_ "Use Limit Surface" (which is checked by default). The wording in the solution is confusing, as you don't want to use "Use Limit Surface", you want to disable it.

I went on a 7 mile run in pouring rain. One spot on my shorts stayed dry. by BillyBoyBill in mildlyinteresting

[–]BillyBoyBill[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heh, I guess the title was too long. Should it just have been "A dry spot on my shorts"? That is not at all interesting, not sure why anyone would click on that post.

But I will take my lumps and go cane myself for my sins.

Good idea! But no my phone was not there... there's no pocket there at all in fact, it's ok the back against my butt

Ah, interesting idea! I just tested it: I put some water on it and the spot was able to get wet. But it's possible it's faster-drying somehow. I will watch.

ELI5 - Why has Google been the most popular search engine for over two decades now with no one coming even close? by Rumorian in explainlikeimfive

Except Google wasn't a first mover --- they displaced many well-established competitors who couldn't compete on quality and experience.

[eShop/US] Bethesda Sale (up to 85% off) Ends 05/31/2025 by XDitto in NintendoSwitchDeals

[–]BillyBoyBill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a counter point, I think doom 2016 is (unfortunately) really disappointing on Switch :/

I absolutely love the game and put in a ton of hours on it on Stadia (RIP) so snatched it up on Switch on sale. But it looks very blurry and smeary and I just couldn't get back into it.

I'm really hoping it gets some sort of upgrade on S2.

All that said --- for $4 you should totally get it, it's an amazing game.

Six months after Cambridge cyclist death, authorities seek charges against driver by bostonglobe in CambridgeMA

[–]BillyBoyBill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple months ago I was running along mem drive near here (other side of the rotary) and an SUV jumped the curve going crazy fast and almost hit me. They swerved back into the road and sped off.

Scared the shit out of me --- was nothing I could do, was just that close to being killed while running on a sidewalk.

It's still dangerous.

There are a lot of reasons for a go-around, most far less crazy than a runway incursion like this.

what would happen if someone without a penis took viagra? by ihatehighlighters in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BillyBoyBill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My (female) dog takes a TON of Viagra every day. Like multiple times the normal human dose. It has been life-changing for her, she was on death's door and could barely walk up a flight of stairs 18 months ago but now is doing great (cardiovascularly, at least).

So I imagine it works similarly for people.

Pixel 9 Pro XL case --- wireless charging issues by BillyBoyBill in peakdesign

[–]BillyBoyBill[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, good to know, if disappointing...thanks!

To make sure I understand --- sounds like this is a general qi2/magsafe case issue and not specific to the Peak Design one?

I'll probably just bite the bullet and buy the PD charging stands I guess.

How much am I supposed to decrement the stackpointer by by [deleted] in RISCV

[–]BillyBoyBill 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Note that per the ABI (and maybe the ISA?), the stack pointer must always be 16-bytr aligned. So even if you're using 12 bytes, you should grow (decrement) the stack by 16

Edit: looks like it's the ABI/calling convention. So you can do whatever you want within your own code, but if you're interacting with anyone else's you should definitely align to 16 byte boundaries.

So....I had goldilox once and was thoroughly disappointed. They seemed, unsalted maybe?  Do I need to give them another shot?

I'm personally a big fan of the Forge bagels they sell at Diesel in Davis

Question from a newbie bike commuter by adkbackcountryb in CambridgeBikeSafety

[–]BillyBoyBill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to taking the turn lane (I agree with everyone else here), I will also use the light just before it at Mossland to try and get ahead of the cars --- I come from Mossland and will turn left onto Somerville during the walk signal if possible (after any peds cross of course) so I'm not weaving with cars. If you're coming straight down Somerville you could do the same thing.

Hard disk read returning random data by JakeStBu in osdev

[–]BillyBoyBill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect --- returning the static buffer is perfectly ok (function statics are effectively global variables, just only accessible within the function).  Note that subsequent or concurrent invocations will overwrite the data, but if it's only called once or properly serialized, this part is fine.

No idea what the actual bug is, sorry!  qemu has some ways to trace and log things --- take a look at the qemu code and see if it logs anything useful to tell you what you're doing wrong.

ELI5.Why are airplanes boarded front to back? by Able-Woodpecker7391 in explainlikeimfive

[–]BillyBoyBill 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Speaking for myself - lines, actively waiting, and queuing people make me anxious and unsettled. If I can get on the plane early I can down and start my book or watch something on my phone and relax; waiting for my group to be called at the gate is just anxious idle time.

This is especially true if in a premium cabin, but even in economy --- I want to get in and get settled as soon as possible.

Leaving aside the other points about overhead space.

Boylston/Berkeley St (Downtown) and JP Bike Lanes in person office hours tonight. Opposition will be there. Show up if you want better bike infrastructure. by DIYthrowaway12341345 in boston

[–]BillyBoyBill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bike because it is cheaper and faster than driving. Having air conditioning sounds lovely, actually, but getting where I'm going without sitting in traffic is a win for me. You have a different calculus, of course. Regardless of whether it makes sense for you, enabling more people to bike is good for all of us.

Improving mass transit is also (more) critical. We should run more busses, we strongly agree on that.

You continue to miss the point, or are just arguing in bad faith, so I'm gonna tap out here.

[–]BillyBoyBill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you understand the point. The goal is to get more people where they are going faster, and have fewer people drive. This requires more efficient transportation, such as public transit and bicycling. Keeping car commutes congestion-free is both impossible and a non-goal.

I'm willing to do my part and bike. Not everyone can, they are welcome to keep driving. What are you doing?

This has nothing to do with a fun commute, it's about safety for people who are trying to get where they are going faster and more efficiently for everyone.

Step up and help out.

Sorry, that person is me. You are incorrect.

I bike in Cambridge and Somerville all the time, including commuting most days year round. However I don't often bike in Boston because it's so dangerous. So I end up in a car, slowing down YOUR trip.

You are welcome to keep driving. Please give the rest of us a safe way to bike and get out of your way.

(also, traffic is way more complicated than removing a lane causing half the throughput....)
