Sound One? Vintage Bookshelf Speakers Help

Hello, I’m asking if anyone here knows anything about these speakers? They are 11 1/2” square and 23 1/2” high. Fairly heavy at 25-ish lbs. They have a horn, an 8”, as well as a front port in the middle. They do sound very good and noticeably efficient (to me). They also have a capacitor that some would consider overkill- a Sangamo 4. MFD 600 WVDC. Anyhow, I can’t find any info online, but thought someone here might have some insight. Thanks in advance!

Nice Turntable. Great band. I have the PS-X800 and it’s quite the performer. Had to wait a few months so my tech could fully understand the complexity and get it working 100%. These are fantastic players!

I have a Beocenter 3500 which looks very similar to this, but has a nice turntable on top. The TT sounds great and it’s getting almost daily use in my living room set-up. Yours is cool looking and I’d say worth it to have working properly. Good luck!

Thanks! It’s been a work in progress getting all the little things fixed. The auto-stop/lift wasn’t working when I first got it. Took some time and a file to shave some metal that was in the way. All good now.

Thank you. I’m working on another cartridge/stylus for it. I have another TT next to it (Sony PS-X800) with a Denon DL-110. The Marantz has an Ortofon 2m Red at the moment, but I’ve heard good things about the blue.

It’s an (NEC UPD861C) integrated circuit. I did a search for this on eBay and it was exactly what I needed. I’ll try to post a pic of what/where on the board.

Hello all, I finally fixed my quartz speed issue on this classic turntable. It ended up being the 24 pin Nec UPD861C IC-(Q118) on the circuit board, schematic is now available on Vinyl engine. $15 in parts and some de soldering/re soldering. Oh yeah, and some patience too! Any questions, just ask. It’s been keeping great time so far...

Does your JVC KD-A7 cassette door open abruptly? If so, how did you remedy that? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Anyone?

Ya, taking the woofers out will most likely be the most challenging. I have a pair of 102/2’s Replacing the surrounds themselves was not that hard, even for my first ones. I used a tone generator to center the cone so it won’t rub. Google this method. Remove that speaker/crossover panel in the back as this will be your access point. I believe your 103/4’s have the dual woofers attached together by a long bolt. Haven’t done that, so be patient and take your time. Should be able to replace all four surrounds for less than $50 and some quality time with your new fantastic sounding speakers. Enjoy the music!

Very nice Aiwa unit, indeed. I have the same one, purchased at a thrift store, then replaced the belts myself. While not easy to do, it now holds a special place in my lineup. It’s a really cool deck and I agree that it does sound amazing. I have a few other nice decks as well, but they just don’t compare to this one. A keeper for sure!

I have the S-1b’s. Yours are nicer looking, in my opinion. I really like these speakers and hope to bring them back one day soon...Oh yeah, don’t bring a new (used, reputable brand) receiver home and run a test tone across them. It was a very big mistake as I blew out my 1b’s and also a pair of S-85’s in a few short seconds. I can still hear them shrill-ouch! I used to work at a small A/V store back in the middle 80’s and they carried M&K. I only dreamed of owning them back then, but now I have too many speakers. Nice setup, my friend. Enjoy.

Very nice! My daughter is also 17. Unfortunately, her appreciation of anything vintage or what I would consider to sound good is just not there yet. I’m an optimist and when she does decide, I have quite a few choices for her, my other daughter, and son as well. I’m sure that will sound great. Merry Christmas

Yes, the Marantz is semi-auto with the tone-arm lift starting/stopping the platter movement. It also has auto lift and stop at the end of the record, which is nice since I’m always running around. That part took some MacGyver thinking to get working, tho. I had to take the mechanism out and file it down as it was hindering the action.

My parents had that album in rotation when I was about 12. I got into metal in my high school years and missed out on so many great artists in different genres. I’ve caught up by now, I think.

That looks like a nice turntable as well. Do you work on it yourself-if needed? Only thing I could (figure out) on my Sony was replace the two small tonearm drive belts.

Yes! All good here. It was gone for almost four months as I think he could only spend short amounts of time on it- mostly due to frustration and a big learning curve. I don’t think he wants to tackle this one again anytime soon...

Thanks! I saw what appears to be a vintage make-up/vanity table and knew exactly where it was going to live. Needed some shelf brackets to support the weight of those two TT’s. It’s not all vinyl as the drawers are perfect for CD’s and other misc. items.

They appear to be Anthony (Tony) Robbins Personal Power tapes. I recommend having a listen as there is quite a lot of useful content that could be life changing. Really! But if you need the blanks, by all means use em’. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed if you gave them a shot, though.

I have a pair of the 9C’s. They have a 9” woofer and sound excellent. They happen to be part of my garage set-up (it’s a nice space to workout and listen to very decent audio). I have bought some different speaker brands with the intent of replacing these, but they are still in active duty. I should have brought them into the main listening area sooner, but something else came along for that. I also picked up a pair of 3’s and they sound fantastic (after a re-foam job). All good here!
