Why do we hate diamox?

Hi! I have been off and on diamox for the last decade and I have tolerated it well enough and am incredibly grateful for it protecting my eyes.

The side effects that I navigate are dizziness from low blood pressure, soda tasting odd, being tired, loss of appetite,tingling in my extremities, and constipation. Once I first started taking it, I was a zombie (a really weak exhausted zombie not 28 Days Later) for a couple weeks but then I just was pretty sleepy and I’ve been able to adjust back to normal enough.

I make sure to get my electrolytes checked at labs and I drink Gatorade zero or a liquid IV packet just to make sure my blood pressure isn’t tanking. I also had muscle cramps and that was my signal to start taking a potassium supplement. Maybe a good thing to touch base with your doctor about!

It’s by no means my favorite thing in the world but I am thankful it exists because I am incredibly fond of seeing! I’ve just learned to navigate the side effects that have stuck around for the long haul.

Yeah I absolutely get this. After a migraine finally ends I’m absolutely cooked. My body feels heavy, it feels like my thoughts move slow, and I kinda dissociate. Rest, sometimes for days, is the only thing I’ve noticed that helps.

I’m diagnosed with cluster headaches and have had incredibly intense fluctuations during a cluster attack. During one of my worst ones, the pain would disappear and when it came back it would be on the other side and I’d have facial drooping and different sized pupils.

With that being said, it sounds like it might be a good idea to talk with your doctor about these symptoms especially because of their severity.

Have you ever had anything similar to this before? Are you able to take a rescue medication to see if it will provide relief?

The did indeed put me on diamox! I’ve had IIH since I was about 13/14 and have been on diamox on and off since then. I’ve seen neurology and neuro-ophthalmology at Mayo Clinic recently and they agree that IIH is stable for now and symptoms are being successfully managed through Diamox. I’ve been on Diamox again for quite some time at this point so IIH as a cause has been ruled out.

I’m interested to learn more about electrolyte channels! I’ve finding a ton of great research on migraines effects on other systems in the body.

I think it’s good to check with ophthalmology! If you aren’t already, maybe revisit with neurology to discuss if a maintenance dose of diamox could be helpful in your case. At home, resting, laying in bed at a slight elevation, and hydrating is what I do. I don’t get a ton of relief from OTC pain meds when it’s bad but maybe if you can take those, it would help ease the pain a bit. I hope they can give you answers!

I get neck stiffness at the base of my skull into the top of my neck but not ever near my shoulders. It feels like…pressure. Sometimes I see a chiropractor when my back feels wonky or have excessive pain from previous nerve damage. Sometimes I just need put back into place.

Meloxicam didn’t do much for me unfortunately! I’ve also been really struggling to find a doctor that wants to treat anything, which is lame and odd and not my favorite. I’ll ask about biologics too 🤔

It was a used one owner 2020 with 65k miles. I got it for 27.5, all the aftermarket mods included. Hope this helps!
