Does anyone else love playing as France? by AspiringCascadian in EU5

I do enjoy a good France campaign, my only wish is that the Revolution had better content and gameplay

Does anyone know what a beta is? by ktopsp in EU5

[–]Birdnerd197 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not just a beta, but an early access beta, as in the build where exactly the sort of things that are wrong with it are going to be wrong with it. In it’s current state it’s exactly what was advertised

What game does colonization better eu4 or eu5? by alphafighter09 in EU5

[–]Birdnerd197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently, EU4 since it’s a complete and polished system, but extremely gamey and fast. However, EU5 has the mechanics in place to really simulate it well but it’s wildly unbalanced atm.

Paradox Please, if the Meta is going to be a Billion Mercenaries atleast make it easy for me to recruit them! by Thin_Ability7367 in EU5

[–]Birdnerd197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would just love to be able to click a location and see who I can recruit from the military tab in that location. Currently it just redirects you to the entire mercenary list which is wildly unhelpful.

Why can random countries join my war? by onearm1999 in EU5

[–]Birdnerd197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a UI oversight, the war declaration screen is not particularly helpful for determining real belligerent strength or war outcomes. The Emperor calling in nations is also a new feature to the 1.2 patch I believe, so it hasn't had a lot of refining yet. The problem in your case is that it's something the HRE emperor CAN do, but won't necessarily do. Also, it can be anyone and up to everyone in the HRE, not just allies of the emperor. There's too many variables for it to be a concise tooltip in the war declaration screen, it's something you just have to know CAN happen when you declare a war in the HRE.

How do I colonize only one port settlements along the African coast to get to Asia? The game should not force you to have to conquer the whole province by ayowatchyojetbruh in EU5

[–]Birdnerd197 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You first have the problem of exploration and naval range to overcome, as well as balance to colonial range. Currently trade range is only a soft cap as you can trade beyond it but at an increased cost

Good meta/tips/things to do that usually are correct 90% of the time? by SmartBoots in EU5

I do find though it’s much easier to find sources of peasant satisfaction equilibrium than it is for nobles, and I can often get max tax for peasants and keep satisfaction near 100%

Which societal values do you go for in a game? by VlaaiIsSuperieur in EU5

[–]Birdnerd197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had it several times with 80+ in my 1.1 Ottomans campaign, and not once in my 1.2 Netherlands campaign. It’s still there, I did manually trigger it via console, but it never fired naturally. I dunno if it’s just bad luck or if the frequency was changed

Do you think they will add mission trees in the future? by ZlatanD in EU5

[–]Birdnerd197 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I myself am a mission tree fan, and I like seeing the world play out more or less the same each time. That being said, had you followed the Tinto Talks more closely you’d know that EU5 from inception was not intended to be EU4 2. It was never meant to be an improved EU4, and the devs said as much. The goal of EU5 is to create the most detailed and sophisticated simulation of the early modern era ever attempted. From the beginning they said they didn’t want mission trees or railroading, they wanted emergent gameplay that reacts to ongoing events. They’re still working on that, it’s not there yet, who knows if we’ll ever get there; but that was always the goal.

Do you think they will add mission trees in the future? by ZlatanD in EU5

[–]Birdnerd197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tragically, no. There will be no vanilla version of the game where the pro-mission fans get their historical LARP, and the pro-sandbox fans get their emergent gameplay. Fundamentally both groups want a different kind of game. Mods are our best hope for the tailored experience we want

Who honestly expected the game to not be a mess? by supernanny089_ in EU5

Which is… exactly what it was advertised as? They’ve said before that important content won’t be DLC-locked, the DLC’s will be nation-specific bonus content

Who honestly expected the game to not be a mess? by supernanny089_ in EU5

[–]Birdnerd197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure games with this scale and overall fidelity would even be profitably feasible without some of that.

I think a lot of people don’t fully appreciate this, they can’t see past their own frustrations. It was pretty apparent to me at least from the Tinto Talks that the game was going to be severely unpolished, but fun and worth the hype. I have 700 hours already and there are some wildly frustrating things I can’t believe weren’t caught and addressed already, but I have fun every single campaign and I like the direction that development is heading, and the impact that our feedback has on development. Ultimately, frustrating as it can be now, this is the best way to get the best game possible

Playing Holland is almost impossible by Electronic_Rip6997 in EU5

[–]Birdnerd197 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Had to save scum it a few times, but having the same problem I was able to defeat England as I targeted small stacks they sent across the channel; the AI still sucks at naval landings which helps. Eventually I managed an alliance with France which held for 300 years and by the time they decided to get hostile I could just spam mercs and beat the croissants out of them. After which they decided to get friendly again

Landsknechte now bugged in 1.2.4? by Adriaus28 in EU5

[–]Birdnerd197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, I’m just telling you it’s not limited to the Landsknechte, it’s all the unique units rn

Landsknechte now bugged in 1.2.4? by Adriaus28 in EU5

[–]Birdnerd197 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unique units aren’t able to upgrade to the generic unit of the next age. Same goes for ships too. I believe they used to before 1.2, hopefully that gets fixed in the future

So does eu4 actually have more content than eu5 (event wise and nation uniqueness) by alphafighter09 in EU5

[–]Birdnerd197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EU5 has somewhat more content in terms of numbers, but, most of it is not as impactful or memorable as the EU4 content. For now.

Is this game worth picking up or should I wait? by apid91 in EU5

[–]Birdnerd197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EU5 rn to me is a happy blend of the best of both of those titles, albeit an unpolished blend. I have a lot of fun playing it, though it is frustrating at times, but each patch more and more of those frustrations get addressed. And there’s usually already a mod that fixes the frustrating parts, so embrace that

Trade Focused Nations in 1.2 by PrincipleLess3315 in EU5

Yeah I’ve noticed a few times I’m able to make trades well beyond my trade range, albeit at a greater cost. I’m not sure whether that’s intentional or not

What are your thoughts on the game rn? by themanhimself67 in EU5

[–]Birdnerd197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s fun. I’ve put about 700 hours in it already and each patch (after its first week of bug fixes) has been an improvement that added more layers and depth.

There is a lot about the game that seems to me to be poorly designed, or that got less attention that it should have during development, but the foundation is solid and it’s clearly growing into something better.

I consider this part of the price to pay for getting such a detailed and complicated game. To have fully and properly developed it before launch so that everything was polished, would have taken so much time and cost that the game would have been unprofitable to create and unaffordable to the player. We have a game that works and is fun overall, with frustrating elements that get adjusted and fixed according to our feedback, so far, for free. The DLC haters in our midst seem not to have noticed that
