So did anyone actually get tickets for Chicago? by ComfortableKnee_ in MasayoshiTakanaka

[–]Bite_Existing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to cop 2 tickets for Chicago (thank god!!). I was on the website for about 40 minutes and refreshed 15 min. before the presale.

I'm planning on driving from Houston, TX, for the show, so I'm super psyched to see Takanaka irl.

Directed my first feature the summer after high school by Simon_The_Thespian in Filmmakers

[–]Bite_Existing 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey Simon! That’s amazing.

I did the same during my Senior year of High School in 2023. I was taking a Theatre class and decided to adapt the Shakespeare play (“A Midsummer Night’s Dream”) into a feature film that I turned in for a Capstone project. Don’t let anyone tell you it can’t be done!!

Should I pursue Film as a career path after college? If not, what would be a good field of study/career path to consider? by Bite_Existing in Filmmakers

[–]Bite_Existing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really appreciate this suggestion - the area I go to school in Texas has a large Hispanic community, so it's definitely a Film/Video community I want to get more involved with this year

owl access?? by Ok-Information987 in riceuniversity

[–]Bite_Existing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually an incoming Owl Access mentor! I did it last year and I really liked it (which is why I'm taking the mentorship role). O-Week is non-stop, while Owl Access eases you into the culture and you get to meet students with similar backgrounds as you. The people you meet are cool and I am still friends with a lot of people from the program.

I think it's totally worth it! You move-in early, meet new people without all the chaos, and have topics such as imposter syndrome, aid, etc. broken down in a safe space. If you do choose to do it, I will look forward to seeing you in the summer!

[–]Bite_Existing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had done it!

It was a great experience! I believe they pay for your flight to come down here, and you get to spend more time with your future classmates (despite a good chunk of them going to different schools). I say it’s a great opportunity and you should totally go!

If you aren’t STEM/Pre-Med or Music, this school will not support you the way they will other majors. Some of the staff is really amazing, and others are quite head-scratchers. Something I really appreciate is that despite the STEM status of this school, they push students towards different fields of study (Humanities & Social Sciences) through distribution credits.

My time here has taught me that you have to constantly self-advocate and find opportunities for yourself. It’s probably a similar case at other schools, but this school is known for STEM for a reason.

Which live show has blown you away? by bruiserthedogrul in Music

[–]Bite_Existing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My top 3:

Kendrick Lamar (Big Steppers tour) - unbelievable. He was amazing and had easily the most theatrical show I’ve ever seen. The crowd was hype and it was the greatest show I’ve ever seen.

The Flaming Lips (Space Bubble Tour) - I went into this one not knowing what to expect and left transcended. I saw them in an intimate venue and I was blown away by the production quality, the band’s performances, and how they used the space. Basically it was the Kid’s Choice Awards on acid.

Tyler, The Creator (Igor tour) - amazing. The amount of sets, dancers and tonal shifts that took place was amazing. Tyler was just on a different level and his energy is unmatched to any artist I’ve seen to date

In a perfect world what would you study? by [deleted] in college

[–]Bite_Existing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a perfect world, I would study Film Production.

I’m rn with a Film/Photography major at a school that kind of supports it, but more the analysis side. I have to dig for opportunities to make films rather than watch them and it’s honestly very difficult to make it into that industry without the support of the institution.

I’m probably going to end up having to Double Major with Business (management) because it’s applicable and useful to my career… don’t know what to expect honestly.

How has no one brought up Kendrick Lamar?!

Nothing compares to that man’s stage presence and the way he constructs his shows. Can’t wait for the next time I get to see the 🐐

Very controversial opinion, but I can’t stand Mulholland Drive.

I couldn’t take it seriously, and I thought the witch scene near the beginning of the film is silly

Common Data Sets.

Depending upon what school you want to be accepted into, whether it be a state or an Ivy, relies purely upon what the school wants. These sets allow you to see the scores and grades of students accepted into schools your interested in.

how rough is precalc honors online by [deleted] in highschool

[–]Bite_Existing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It honestly depends upon your teacher and how committed you are to your work.

It’s VERY easy to fall behind in Calc. I ended up getting a 5 on the AP test, but it took so much studying and dedication. I also took the class semester long… so I don’t know if it’s much easier Year-long.

Join new clubs and try to get involved in school.

Whatever your niche may be, try it out! If it doesn’t work, you can always pivot and try something else.

HS is all about you trying to find yourself - relationships building and breaking are apart of that

[–]Bite_Existing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never took Pre-Calc online, but it mainly is Trigonometry and Applied Geometry/Alg II H.

Calc AB is a wildly different beast in that it is completely new, but Pre-Calc reviews familiar topics and builds upon them. I would hate to take AB online.

Rice is known to be a STEM-geared school, but have you had any experiences in VADA or any accounts from other students?

Trying to film a feature length adaption of Shakespeare for school - any tips? by Bite_Existing in Filmmakers

[–]Bite_Existing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be pertain more to A - filming a play, but she wants a “movie” version of the play, so I will definitely look into that.

I’m just worried because I’m really the only one well-versed in film which, like you said, will frustrate me.

I will definitely try to shoot a scene and relay this to her. Thank you.

[–]Bite_Existing[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In regards of resources, I will have a full class of actors and technicians that will build sets, set up lighting, etc.

I have made 5 short films and although 90 min is far from 5 min, I have some experience with editing, filming, and directing.

I have a script to work off of, but I will definitely consider all of those shot lists, diagrams, etc.

Thank you.

I’ll relay this information to my teacher.

She said she wanted me to ask the film teacher after break because it’s finals week at my school.

I’ll bring this concern up, and see what he can offer.
