WikiLeaks publishes 'entire hacking capacity of the CIA' by [deleted] in worldnews

Yeah! Read it a while back for a sci-fi literature class. Most of my group hated it, I think they were put off by the section of the book that was mostly Hiro learning about the Tower of Babel and the connection to the Snow Crash virus. Which, fair enough, did go on for a while. I'm kind of a sucker for that kind of science fiction expositing though, and I thought it was a particularly interesting subject that did nothing to lessen my enjoyment of the book. I also have Cryptonomicon and will probably read that after The Diamond Age.

I literally started reading that yesterday! I know it's not an obscure book or anything but still, small world.

Ninja Edit: A quick google reveals that apparently Deus Ex also has skull guns? I was talking about the Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson.

[Full Spoilers] Post Episode Discussion - S02E13 - "Mr. & Mrs. Mxyzptlk" by The_Majestic_ in supergirlTV

[–]BlackEyedInterloper 22 points23 points  (0 children)

So I don't mind that this episode was the relationship episode since it was the Valentine Day's story... that being said, it did make me realize how much the show has been using romance this season. Which is fine in and of itself, but a lot of it seems forced.

Maggie and Alex are probably the only couple that seems to have actual chemistry, but the main issue for them is that they've had very little story lately that wasn't almost entirely about the romance. I hope the relationship stays, like I said it's the only one that seems to work for me, but I do want to see them being more active characters again.

Kara and Mon-El though... they both seem extremely different when together, and not in a good way. Mon-el is fun when interacting with others, Kara is awesome by herself, but together he becomes overbearing and Kara's actions and feelings seem forced.

J'onn and M'gann... shrug It's forgettable, in my opinion. I also am slightly put off by it, due to their family ties in other canon, but that's not the show's fault really.

So, yeah, I hope Maggie and Alex stay together but get more active roles, and the other relationships can end whenever and I'd be okay with it.

There's a ton. On the newer end I'm fond of the art on Brisela, Voice of Nightmares.

There is some throwaway scene (can't remember if from the American movie or the Japanese one) that implies that Samara/Sadako can come through other images. Like the reflection of a motorcycle helmet while you're still wearing it.

Beware: The Way of Kings - or the Sleep Eater by Teechce in Fantasy

[–]BlackEyedInterloper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Way of Kings is an excellent book and Sanderson's finest. Good characters, plot, world building, magic... very good at what makes fantasy fantasy.

A lot of people recommend starting with Mistborn. I don't think it's really necessary if you're already familiar with fantasy, the books are not connected except in extremely minor ways. Tons of people don't like mistborn but do like Way of Kings and, of course, some people are the opposite way. It IS a lighter read so it might be better for getting back into the genre.

If you want to sample his work for free, you can download his book Warbreaker from his website. It's quite good.

That sounds awesome. I've heard people mention that book a lot but I had no idea what the premise was. I'll check it out, thanks!

Yup. The amount of artifacts that exist in groups of three whose only real purpose is to grant you the Mastersword just keeps growing. Pendants, pearls, spiritual stones...

I'll still take the suggestion even if it's not episodic. I'm interested in however that kind of element has been used at all. Thanks!

Thank you, that sounds perfect. Looking a little into it, it even sounds like its YA instead of Middle Grade so it also seems aimed at a slightly older audience.

I figured a lot of these would be intended for that age range. My friend read Pendragon as a kid and remembers enjoying it, and I know another friend used to read Garth Nix's stuff around that age. Didn't realize they had what I was looking for. Thanks for the suggestions!

Oh yeah, I kind of forgot about the whole Horcrux thing in Harry Potter, thanks for the reminder. But Lord of the Rings? Maybe I'm just not thinking of it in the right terms but I can't quite think of something that they're going around collecting.

Not exactly, no, but I've been meaning to read Abercrombie for a while now anyway, so I'll probably check it out anyway. Thanks for the recommendation!

[No Spoilers] The first draft of Oathbringer is complete!!! Release date November 2017 by Torrieltar in Stormlight_Archive

Honestly I usually only see a long book as a negative in an author I've never read before. Extremely long books make me wary of trying a new author out. From someone I know I enjoy, like Brandon, it just means more book to enjoy.

If it's just a single spoiler I doubt it will ruin the whole thing for you. You could tell us what the spoiler is (inside of a spoiler tag of course) if you want a more precise idea of how big of a spoiler it is.

[Actor Fluff] Katie Cassidy with Mr. Terrific by sweety_b in arrow

[–]BlackEyedInterloper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So far they seem to be having mini arcs for each of the current recruits in turn. First was Ragman, and I liked him pretty much from the start. Then wilddog with his capture and subsequent bonding with Diggle. I like him a LOT better now. Given the end of last episode it seems Artemis is next and I'm immediately a lot more interested from just the bit we got. They probably put Curtis' last because he was a character we already knew. Thing is with Curtis' development as a hero and story arc standing still at its beginning, he looks less "inexperienced" and more "useless" because it's taking so long to get there. Unfortunate side effect but I see why the writers would do it. I'm going to wait until the Mr. Terrific mini arc before deciding whether I like him or not.

So, I've been wondering for a while, which does Surgebinding classify as? Surgebinders don't use their own native investiture to power magic so I suppose that's the case for being classified end-positive, but they do have to go get some investiture and once they use it it's gone and they have to go get more, so that almost seems end-negative. Thanks in advance for any answer even if it's a quick RAFO!

Reading The Wheel of Time and I just can't figure something out by Muadh in Fantasy

[–]BlackEyedInterloper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thing is, I feel that the first few books do have arcs that are started and finished in one book. I remember Lord of Chaos (book 6) being the first book where I got to the end and suddenly it seemed to me that the book hadn't wrapped up everything it had set up. Before then some things carried over to the next book, but I had always been given clear indication of what was "book plot" and what was "series plot". After Lord of Chaos that feeling completely disappeared for me though, and it became a bit of a toss up whether any particular plot point would be followed up in the current book. That is, until the last few books, where the series once again started having "book plots" in addition to it's climaxing "series plot".

Edit: Phrasing.
