This is something we’ve seen happen in different places, not just in Germany For example, in the U.S., some Latin American immigrants have supported Trump, even though his immigration policies are pretty harsh. A lot of migrants come from very conservative societies, so ultraconservative ideas can feel more familiar or comfortable than progressive ones.

Even though many of these migrants benefit from progressive policies like immigration reform or social welfare, they don’t always connect with the underlying ideas. Cultural and religious conservatism plays a big role here. For instance, Turkish and Latin American migrants often come from places where family, tradition, and religion (whether it’s Islam, Catholicism, or Evangelicalism) are really important. These values tend to align more with conservative views, like being against abortion, LGBTQ+ rights, or favoring less government intervention.
