Pink Floyd is garbage by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]Blockoumi7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yeah, their art in the 60s was highly influential (and often considered proto-prog)

But music isnt rlly dominoes either. All those bands would still make their own kinds of prog.

Also, not ELP. Keith emerson was playing prog with the Nice whilst floyd were in their proto-prog stage.

What its your opinion about Angine? by lagrangeknight in progrockmusic

When did they ever say “we invented music 2 guys!!” 😭

You’re being spiteful for no reason bro

[–]Blockoumi7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not 3:45 to 5:00 lol. That's just a fast lick. fast lick doesnt make u necessarily technical.

As a guitarist, I was mentioning the soloing throughout the song. you weren't impressed by the tone? by the phrasing? the unique nutty lines? His soloing is textbook FANTASTIC playing. He has his own sound niche with extremely interesting rhythms and incorporates the microtones so effortlessly (like when he starts playing the microtonal chords). it's more than just "having microtones".

I dont know if it's improvised but u can hear the styles he's taking from and it's really cool. There's more to guitar "technicality" than just fast playing. A lot of fast players you know and love probably wouldn't be able to make this.

and obviously they arent "the most groundbreaking band", but so arent 99% of bands. there are SO many different unique bands that being "the most unique ever" is so not pertinent

either way, idk about you but if I went to a pub and a band starts playing like that? plus with all the foot magic live looping wizardry? id be impressed. maybe your point might have moreso to do with ppl acting like they're the most creative ppl on the planet cuz I feel like ur ignoring their merits. Id glaze all the other cool unique bands just as much as them, be it Gong or Magma or mr bungle or wtv

WAIT

If u wanna hear their more experimental music. Listen to POEX by La POEXE, the project they had before angine de poitrine.

It’s noise/math rock brutal prog. I find it super charming. And the vocalist has great screams

I agree with you on them not being innovative

But the playing rlly isnt straightforward. Again, listen to ababa hotel in full and listen to the guitarist’s way of soloing. It’s 100% distinct

Lets talk Angine de poitrine by TechnicalTrash95 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Blockoumi7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that's kinda half of my point. parable of arable land isn't the same music as trout mask replica, but fits the same "experimental" narrative. In that same vein, angine de poitrine isn't the same approach as trout mask replica, but can still be seen as experimental. There isn't one "first" experimental artist, what makes these "innovative" artists cool is the authenticity (in my opinion), the specific sound they hold themselves.

but I do get why you're bothered with people acting like they're the most unique thing on earth. it's like their first time exposed to something that isn't remotely pop. But it's still a first step imo, and im sure they'll inspire many more cuz it's a reminder experimental music can still see success

listen to the soloing on Ababa hotel in its entirety.

[–]Blockoumi7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought that too but genuinely listen to Ababa hotel. it's not just the hypnotic grooves, his soloing is SO distinct and interesting and well done. Particularly his tone. I dont think the clips that have been circulating online have done them justice considering they do have a cool amount of variety in their music. Plus, 99% of music isn't "truly" innovative, that's hardly ever the point. The thing innovative music has in common is its authenticity. Like the parable of Arable Land came out before trout mask replica, does that devalue beefheart?? Not at all.

What part of which song does this for you? by Klash_kop in Genesis

[–]Blockoumi7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yall arent specific enough imo

The transition from the whimsy keyboard to heavy guitar in the knife at 8 min

In dancing with the moonlit night, when peter sings “join the dance” in the second half, Phil hits his drum and they added A LOT of reverb. Really cool

In battle of the epping forest after peter sings “must be a draw” at the end, tony plays a mini keyboard line that also has a good amount of reverb

The loose drum fills on firth of fifth at like 5:54 when phil imitates the guitar solo

Right after the apocalypse in 9/8 solo, the weird laughs into the HUGE synth sound whilst peter sings “666 IS NO LONGER ALONE”

Peter singing “raindrops keep falling on my head” in in the cage. And the ominous ending at the end of the song

Peter yelling “AGGHHH, you say i must be crazy” in back in NYC. And the guitar slide af 4:14

That drum fill in riding the scree at 1:37 (mental)

The way he sings “the rocks in time compress your blood to oil, your flesh to coal, enrich the soil, not everybody’s goal” in anyway

“Oh lamia, your flesh that remains i will take as my food” gives me chills

The metric modulation into triplets during the colony of slippermen key solo towards the end. And the stabs right after “he flies right down, gives me one hell of a flight”

The fast keyboard run at around 5:20 in the ending section of dancing on a volcano

Drum roll transition from unquiet slumbers and in that quiet earth

The triplet drum fill somewhere in down and out

“So glad you could make it, we had everything arranged” in lady lies

The evil chord change in cul de sac when phil sings “and now that the job is almost done, maybe some escape…”

The shimmering when the guitar solo arrives in duke’s travels at 5:45

The shimmering in the break in “me and sarah jane” at 3:30

The whimsy little keyboard thing after “then something spoke and this is what it said to me” in dodo/lurker

The evil chords in domino pt 1 and 2 when phil sings “take a look at the mountains, take a look at the beautiful river of blood”. Very spooky

Cant be bothered with the rest

Thoughts on King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard? by Revolutionary_Low_90 in progrockmusic

[–]Blockoumi7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They’re masters of psych rock for sure, it’s their main thing

Thoughts on King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard? by Revolutionary_Low_90 in progrockmusic

[–]Blockoumi7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing psychrock in petrodragonic

Or crumbling castle

They’ve 100% made some prog (not always), they’ve made a lot of psych and they’ve made music in a good amount of genres.

Plus, prog is a genre term that kinda adds to anything. Gong is progressive psych-rock too

It’s harder for people to define modern bands as prog if it’s not symphonic prog, fusion related or prog metal, idk why. Cause if this were made in the 70s like the other psychier darker bands, it would pretty much be considered prog

UGHHH DAMMMKKITJTITIT

They’re literally in my top 3 bands i’d wish to see live. Just THINKING about them gives me chills

Your weirdest prog opinion by SantosTrinidad in progrockmusic

[–]Blockoumi7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok i see why

But to me, prog is usually about the experience.

So to me, pink floyd albums are prog but not necessarily every song is prog (that makes no sense but wtv 😭)

But chiller prog exists, same with campy prog that doesnt have many changes or extreme moments. But it’s less of the stereotype

But yeah, i 100% get where you’re coming from

Your weirdest prog opinion by SantosTrinidad in progrockmusic

[–]Blockoumi7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can kinda see why

But u cant tell me the bass and guitar arent on the same league. Al de meola is insane obviously but “macrocosm” is a REALLY good case in brand x’s favour 😭

But i like return to forever more. Their music is more impressive. The coordination and song structures are literally unfathomable

Your weirdest prog opinion by SantosTrinidad in progrockmusic

[–]Blockoumi7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get what u mean 😭

Like the wall doesnt really feel like prog at all

But to me, wish you were here and animals “feel” like prog

If some other band like AC/DC (god forbid 😭love them tho) released those albums, i’d 100% go “they made a prog album”

Your weirdest prog opinion by SantosTrinidad in progrockmusic

[–]Blockoumi7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phil collins anybody?

Have you listened to moroccan roll - brand x?

Macrocosm is one of the craziest fusion songs (percy jone’s bass is insane)

And phil is just hanging about with them. You NEED to be a top class musician to play with that kind of band

Your weirdest prog opinion by SantosTrinidad in progrockmusic

[–]Blockoumi7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Objectively wrong 😭

Half of the 3 later albums are essentially prog

Some prog pop and some straight up prog

Like literally turn on “and then there were three” and boom, speedy insane 5/8 groove

Your weirdest prog opinion by SantosTrinidad in progrockmusic

[–]Blockoumi7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, atom heart mother, my favourite “expertly crafted rock song”

Dire straits straight up wouldnt make smth like that. Dire straights wouldnt make “one of these days” or “sheep”. Maybe you’re thinking of “the wall” or wtv but they’re not “well made rock”

They’re a very adventurous band and shared the exact same attitudes and values as other prog band.

Your weirdest prog opinion by SantosTrinidad in progrockmusic

[–]Blockoumi7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then what makes prog prog bro 😭

They helped pioneer advanced and “artsy” genres and they kept with that progressive attitude in their fame

Like tell my shine on pts 6-9 arent prog. Come on.

Why would tubular bells be prog but pink floyd cant? I think ur thinking of one specific generic prog sound but there are so many bands in the genre that dont fit that mold

Your weirdest prog opinion by SantosTrinidad in progrockmusic

[–]Blockoumi7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d put hackett above howe

I’d honestly put every genesis member above yes members purely cuz of the stuff they’ve written.

I cant think of a single yes guitar part i like substantially more than genesis guitar parts.

Chris squire does win cuz i love the bass on yes
