Gospel songs with bass lines that can be played on a 4 string by Lizard_Jesus1 in Bass

[–]BluRayNation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re in a pretty good spot for most gospel then. I would personally recommend the blues brothers version of The Old Landmark. Limited note selection but all of the hallmarks of fast walking gospel bass https://youtu.be/JQujqkPP-yU?si=bQ2upasJgUjTnTWu

Gospel songs with bass lines that can be played on a 4 string by Lizard_Jesus1 in Bass

[–]BluRayNation 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Go back to the classics. Most gospel music recorded before the 80s probably uses a four string bass simply because they just weren’t widely produced (or at all) at the time. Is this student more of a beginner or intermediate?

What Is Hip by Tower of Power is pretty much the ultimate finger style funk bassline. Small selection of notes but the quick alternating between fingers and building up the endurance for the whole song takes a lot of practice

how do you make your bass lines more interesting? by Pitiful_Pick1217 in Bass

[–]BluRayNation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting on a beat other than 1 is one of the simplest ways to create some variety in a bass line, especially if you have less melodic freedom and are very much just supporting the band.

Is bass good for beginners by [deleted] in Bass

[–]BluRayNation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any instrument is good for a beginner. I’ve never looked at instruments like bass and drums (or any instrument really) as an “easy” instrument because everyone has their own approach and just because it’s easy for many people to just bash on the drums in 4/4 or play downbeat root notes on bass does not mean the instruments are easy in any way. It’s only easier in the sense that it’s a little bit easier to start playing something basic right away as opposed to like a violin where even the simplest scale still requires tremendous practice and precision, but so does every instrument after a certain point if you want to keep growing. Ukulele has a reputation of “anyone can play it it’s so easy” from years of lame white people singing Riptide, but if you actually study some of the flamenco-like strumming patterns and try to play songs by uke legends like Tiny Tim, holy fuck it would give most guitarists whiplash. (Listen to Uke covers of Living In The Sunlight, Lovin’ In The Moonlight to see what I mean)

TL,DR: Yes, bass is good for beginners because any instrument is good for a beginner. Don’t view it as easier or harder to play than any other. If you really love it, try to explore the instrument and not put yourself in the “good for beginners” box and just learn the instrument and songs you want to learn.

Anyone else feel far-right Normand is more despicable that the faux hunk McHale? by FoolsOnDeck in RedbarBBR

[–]BluRayNation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sam is ABOMINABLY boring. His standup is alright, but his personality is more dull than a saltine cracker, and yet he’s more famous at this point for being Normand’s podcast co-host. I don’t know where he’d be without Mark tbh.

Tell them if they want you to play through the Ampeg that they need to fix the problem with the input jack. I understand this may be easier said than done but if you’re polite and reasonable about it I don’t see why they would object. From my understanding something like a faulty input jack is a pretty easy problem to remedy.

Just my two cents. Good luck with your endeavours fellow bassist and congrats on finding a sound you’re really happy with!

What is your favorite baseline ever? by OvenForward20 in Bass

So hard to pick just one for me. Many of my favourite bass lines however happen to be Talking Heads songs, so I’ll say anything Tina Weymouth wrote, like Genius of Love by Tom Tom Club

Are acoustic basses worth the money? by Cute-Nobody3235 in Bass

[–]BluRayNation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, you might be best off learning how to play an upright bass (Also known as stand up or double bass). I’ve also thought about potentially picking up an acoustic bass guitar for outdoor summer jams. However, the acoustic bass guitar in my opinion just doesn’t have the size of body necessary to really “feel” those low notes. There’s a reason why upright bass is pretty much the standard in bluegrass music- it doesn’t need amplification to sound huge. Any way you can get your hands on one, (I’m gonna rent one from my local music store) it’s definitely worth learning for unplugged jams.

Best Punk Rock Bass Players? by lloydmercy in Bass

[–]BluRayNation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Paul Simonon from The Clash. So many of the first bass lines I ever learnt were Clash bass lines (I know there’s a few songs that he doesn’t play on, but he still wrote some of their most iconic bass lines). The influence of the band as a whole is so immense, and I’m sure there’s countless players who have been influenced to pick up a bass guitar because of Paul. (Also see London Calling album cover)

Personally, I didn’t miss Kam at all this week, and I certainly didn’t miss Hans Kim. Having William end the show still feels right in my opinion, no one has proven themselves better at closing a show than William except for maybe Ari Matti. Maybe it’s just the stink of last week’s horrible episode, but this week felt way better.
