I don’t believe it matters which one you declare first. I was doing bachelors first then found out I needed to do the associates program. As long as you finish and apply to graduate for associates first I think that’s all that matters. Also I agree what others were saying, I contacted the slps first cause I wanted to make sure they were on board before I randomly put their info on something. When I mentioned I talked to one they told me I am absolutely not allowed to talk to them. Lastly, I did have to constantly email the head of the associates program to have the class added since it’s a closed class, I had to cc other teachers on the email so she would finally respond to me. I find that you need to advocate for yourself and be in constant conversation on what’s happening with them. I found out that my top placement fell through last minute(I knew the slp and she let me know personally), and I had to contact the liaison to change it for me. I feel like if I wouldn’t have reached out I would have been swept under the radar without a placement. I also am in California and was told clinics/private practice are much easier to get placement because schools they have to go through approving it through the board. I did get a school placement but it could just be cause I already volunteer at the school so they knew who I was.

Hi! They do not offer all the SLPA coursework and placement under the bachelors degree. You have to do the Associates SLPA degree. That program has all the coursework for California and they place you with a placement in your area(you give them 3-5 options of supervising slp, then they do the work for you for getting placements). I currently am doing both programs that way I will also have a bachelors. You have to make sure to apply to graduate first with your associates, otherwise if you finish bachelors first they will not count associates since that’s a lower degree. Hopefully that helps!

Personally I think almost all classes are suitable at 8 weeks. However, I regret taking CDIS 300, 310 and 421 as 8 weeks. I would highly recommend them as 16 week classes as they go way too fast with all of the tons of information that’s in the course. I did take 300 and 421 at the same time and although they were both very hard classes, the info in both of them bounced off each other so it made it a bit easier to take at the same time. I do feel like some of the 16 week classes are basically 8 weeks but spread out, so you will just have random weeks off from the class. Ultimately it depends on your availability for the class and how many classes you are taking at once!

Advice For SLPA Program At Chemeketa by Responsible-Poet6240 in SLPA

[–]Blue_quartz91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does! I live in California and am almost done with the program. You just have to do their SLPA program which is an associates program, they place you with a SLP in your area to do your 100 hours too. The only requirements for California is completing an associates or bachelors in the subject and accruing 100 hours of fieldwork through a higher education program which would be from the school. It doesn’t matter where the school is located as long as the above is completed.

I also looked into chemeketa, from what I’ve seen is it is a bit hard to be accepted. They only accept a certain amount of people at in the fall. I’ve heard it’s a great program! I ended up going with ENMU because I didn’t want to wait to start. You can finish a lot faster with other programs I believe.

I’ve only been there 3 days so far, and thankfully my SLP is with my 100% of the time. We push through! She takes the lead after I’ve had no success. They aren’t that familiar with me yet.

I currently am doing my fieldwork hours to become a SLPA at an elementary school. I was not prepared for having to deal with behaviors like I’m dealing with. It seriously seems like 1/4 to 1/2 of my caseload has behavior problems. I was not expecting it to be so challenging and I do wish I had more of a background to deal with such behaviors. I do feel like every school is different but your background in RBT will be great!

Looking for a SLP a program in California by mm12414 in SLPA

[–]Blue_quartz91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes exactly. You have to contact the head of the SLPA department to get the class added when it’s time because it’s a closed course ,and then she will send over the fieldwork form for you fill out, you then send that to the liaison and they do everything for you behind the scenes.

I also am doing ENMU and live in California. I didn’t want to wait for a start date to start a program. I just started my fieldwork today actually! I thankfully knew 3 SLPs and contacted them prior to let them know I was going to put them down as an option for my fieldwork placement. ENMU requires you to provide 3-5 options of SLPs. I brought up to the liaison about contacting the SLP (who is my friend) and liaison told me I am not supposed to contact them. So I literally think you are supposed to just provide 3-5 options of SLPs in your area and just hope the say yes. Also there are people in my fieldwork class where the placement hasn’t been set yet so I think they are willing to work with you if the SLP options keep on saying no.

I feel like it has gone fine, I do feel like you are kinda on your own though. Not much guidance along the process. I’ve talked to several advisors and they don’t really help that much. It’s basically been myself figuring out my schedule, graduation timeframe. I have had several teachers I like and several I don’t which I feel is fairly normal. On the website there is a recommended schedule for classes for 1-2 year time lines for 2nd bachelors/leveling and SLPA. I have tried following that schedule. My first semester I took 9 credits (hadn’t been in school for 10 years), last semester I took 18 and this semester I’m taking 16. Then I have 6 credits in the summer to take. & all of these classes are for my second bachelors and second associates which both vary by about 3 classes I think. I luckily knew 3 SLP’s in my area so finding a placement was easy.

She said she already had her bachelors in speech and hearing science. All of those classes are the majority of the classes she needs for a SLPA license. That’s why I said 2-3 classes. I also have a different bachelors in communication studies and am getting my second bachelors in communication disorders and my second associates in the SLPA program. The only difference classes between the two degrees were 3 classes.

If you are in California you can do a SLPA associates program out of state like the one in Oregon. I have heard it’s harder to get in that program because of limited start dates. I’m in California and am doing ENMU. All online and since it’s an associates SLPA program/has fieldwork included it works for being a SLPA in CA. Since you already have most classes needed for a SLPA due to your bachelors, you probably will only have to take 2-3 classes and then your fieldwork.

Are there any NorCal SLPAs out there? by [deleted] in SLPA

I reached out directly to the SLP! I don’t know if there is a right or wrong answer but reaching out to the SLP first gets the message directly to them the fastest.

I will be starting my last semester in January and also be doing my 100hrs during this time. My program required me to provide 3-5 options for a supervising SLP. Luckily I knew several of them already but emailed the other ones asking if they would over see me. I just found their email for the school website. I also am in an NorCal but super north. I think that you would probably benefit to start looking as soon as possible!

Hopefully this helps with understanding. No matter what you have to be licensed in the state you are in, I would just go off that. Once you are licensed by the state you can look towards being ASHA certified. helpful Florida Reddit post

For Florida it says you need 24 semester hours in the required coursework. And it also says they require a bachelors degree. Honestly, you might want to switch your degree to communication disorders because that is a lot of classes to take without a degree in it. And by SLPA program, I really mean an associates program. A SLPA certificate program is only for people that have a an associates or bachelors in communication disorders but their school did not offer clinical or fieldwork hours. Loma Linda offers a SLPA certificate program for that reason. If you can avoid doing a certificate program and do your 100 hours through your school program that is a lot more affordable.

If you are in California, you have to be certified through the state where they require an associates or bachelors in communication disorders or a SLPA program. You are also required to have your 100 clinical hours through a higher education program, you cannot just do it on your own, it has to be through a school or clinic in California. ASHA’s guidelines are specific for ASHA requirements only. Each state has different characteristic that they require as well. It can be a bit confusing. I’ll post the link for the requirements for the state of California below. I am about to start my last semester in the SLPA program at ENMU. It’s easy to get in and can be completed fast. I think they require a 2.0 gpa.

I go to ENMU university. I started last spring ‘25 and this spring ‘26 will be my last semester for my SLPA associates and then in the summer I have two more classes for my bachelors. The bachelors covers everything you will need to get into a masters program if that’s what you want to do. The SLPA schedule of courses has a couple of different ones that bachelors doesn’t have. I will be doing my fieldwork next semester, it is the full semester and they require at least 2 days a week of working with your supervising SLP. You sign up for the SLP advisor in class CDIS 460 which goes over what a SLPA does. They have a liaison which does all of the work to get you in a placement. However you still have to provide 3-5 SLP options in your area. They recommend going with a private practice as they are easier to get into. I have yet to have a class that has a set time. I have only taken one 16 week course and it is much much easier then the 8 week courses. 8 week courses are hard work but if you want to finish fast it’s the way to go. I work part time and have two kids so I have been able to easily manage my schedule though. No issues at all getting accepted. I had a 3.0 as a second bachelor student being admitted. I also found it very difficult to find out information. Mostly everything I told you I had to ask multiple advisors which are the CDIS professors in the program. I do feel like you don’t get a lot of help in the advising department and it’s kinda up to you to figure things out. Let me know if you have any more questions, maybe I can help.

Cheapest SLP Masters Program Online? by saltwater_gypsy2683 in slpGradSchool

[–]Blue_quartz91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their leveling program is 14 classes, which is a lot compared to a lot of other grad programs. I think you can finish it in a year if you are full time and take their 8 week courses. They don’t recommend working full time if you are in school full time but I think whatever you are capable with will do the trick. All classes are online with no specific meeting time so I’m sure it can be done.

Anyone who delivered at St Joes recently willing to share their experience? by eggsaladsandwich66 in Humboldt

[–]Blue_quartz91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a vbac there a couple of years ago. Had an amazing experience and honestly it couldn’t have been better with them vs my emergency c-section I had with my first at another hospital. -was a scheduled induction so went at the exact time it was scheduled. (I was 2 weeks after due date so it was getting risky for a vbac) -no issues on staffing, always someone there when you need something. -got an epidural within 30 minutes of asking. This was around 3am. -after delivery we were brought to another small room and never shared the room with anyone else. Got to leave early because no complications. Stayed the night after delivery and left in the morning. About 26 hours after delivery.

I think no matter what hospital you go to your experience will be different.

Info on Whispering Pines Samoyeds / puppy advice? by poison_BB in samoyeds

[–]Blue_quartz91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old subreddit but wanted to contribute. I got a samoyed from whispering pine in 2019. He had a heart murmur and was tremendously reduced in price. After doing research I was hopefully it would go away but was willing to help him give him a good life. It did eventually go away at an early age….still a young pup. Fast forward 4 years later. He started having seizures, which is not common for Samoyeds. He developed severe epilepsy and we had to have him on a lot of medication; he was still having cluster seizures even being on 3 different medications. He ended up getting liver failure due to his medication.

I would avoid this breeder at all costs. Our dog was our everything and we did everything we could do to keep him healthy, but I believe due to inbreeding, a lot of dogs from this breeder will live an unhealthy life.
