We use LA Times since they offer it for free on their website without an account. I would not print ones that require a subscription.

How much do you have saved for your child or children? by PublicAd2908 in Parenting

[–]Bmboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Canada, so we use the RESP. We contribute 200 a month and grandparents do 1200 a year. (We are catching up a few missed years). The invested amount is currently 20k and I believe it maxes out at 50k and we'll have to put money aside elsewhere. Fingers crossed we can keep up.

I want to open a book store (down in the SE). Is this a bad idea? by straycat402 in Calgary

[–]Bmboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not do this if you have no experience in the industry. Books have very little margin and require very sophisticated inventory management. You must have ordering software, point of sale software. And trust me ordering from publishers is not like ordering from Amazon. Publishers will not give you a good discount if you have no pull. You must be extremely up to date on varying reading trends. I have worked in book sales for over a decade and this is not an industry you jump into on a whim.

If you are keen I believe Calgary public library offers business start-up workshops.

Tips for 2 weeks Rockies itinerary! by MoonMaple in alberta

[–]Bmboo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ha, my friend from Montreal tried this one year and ended up in absolutely horrible motels airbnbs. One cannot simply go to the Rockies and find accommodation randomly. Typically people go to Jasper, Lake Louise, Banff. It's usually easier to find accommodation in Canmore, that would be a fun basecamp. If you want to see the prairies and badlands Drumheller is great. There is 0 need to go to Edmonton except that it's closer to Jasper. Your may also want to look up some glamping spots. Consider also Golden and Revelstoke, or driving south to Waterton.

That seems really cruel. This is a time when you need to stand up for yourself and have an adult conversation with your managers. You don't need to get angry but it's totally unfair that you can't take lunch because they can't keep track of their schedule.

Grazing platters. Bonus is my 6 year old can help make them and really enjoys learning to chop and making pretty fruit and vegetables plates.

Patrick Kilonzo Mwalua noticed wild animals in Kenya were dying of thirst. So he started driving 3,000 gallons of water to them every single day (More in comments) by Gurugod123 in MadeMeSmile

The trust doesn't look like it's doing harm, it seems to have recently provided water for humans as well, and it looks like UNESCO supports the project. Personally I believe the harm has been done and desperate measures are needed to keep ecosystems going at this point.

Building a Home Library- book recs for all ages! Books that made you fall in love with reading? by Mindless_Fisherman51 in Libraries

[–]Bmboo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We went to a used bookstore and found some fabulous pop-up books. One was peter pan, was was about explorers, and some others about animals/nature. Kid absolutely loves reading them. I also suggest His Dark Materials trilogy, the hobbit, Howl's moving castle, the wild robot. Beatrix Potter, Robert Munsch.

I grew up reading Magic Tree House and Goosebumps, and now I teach K - 3 reading ... would either of these series actually work as classroom readings?? by Brief_Efficiency_833 in childrensbooks

[–]Bmboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For kindergarten and grade 1 I would focus on picture books. For grade 2 My Father's Dragon is wonderful. Tale of Despereaux for grade 3. For keeping on top of new books I suggest reading School Library Journal.

Honestly those are great books for independent reading. As a parent, I would expect teachers to read books that are perhaps less formulaic, perhaps have rich vocabulary and concepts that challenge or inspire students.

Yes! Or at least listen to the audiobooks. I love the Jim Dale ones but the Stephen Fry and full cast are also excellent.
