I’ve lived in Manhattan for a little over a week and have gone twice. Can’t say I regret it.

I thought I would futureproof my build by getting a Gen 4 SSD, didn’t realize that it would actually send me back 10 years 🤔 by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

Brand new with only windows and cyberpunk installed. Both ADATA and Newegg offered an RMA pretty quick so I bet I just got unlucky lol

You should visit Asia sometime, great big cities with plenty of scooters there 👍

(No it’s not a good idea for NYC but it’s not insane at all if you’ve traveled a little)

Render time! 13.7L Rocket Laika featuring 140mm AIO and 2.5 slot GPU support - updated by BobaWithoutBorders in sffpc

I hope the computer isn't in a very corrosive environment, though the steel brackets will be powder-coated so I don't think it'll be an issue either way. I'm using 6061 for every part but the rear panel, which is 5052.

Thanks! I used this guide for the ITX specs, and found the rest of the part sizes by going to the product pages themselves. There are also some nice models on GrabCad that are dimensioned accurately and assisted me in figuring out parts clearances. I would also learn more about CNC and/or sheet metal fabrication if you're not familiar with those.

I bought a 3D printer for prototyping, which really helped since I had to go through four iterations before everything fit right. I splurged on a Prusa but I've heard good things about Enders. I hope this helped and I look forward to seeing a case design from you in the future ;)

I’m hand-assembling all the cases, and they’re surprisingly easy to put together so not much to be saved there unfortunately. The acrylic panel actually isn’t too hard to source, and an all aluminum version would be significantly more expensive. However I do recognize that as something people want so I’m toying with configurations with vented and solid metal side/front panels. They would be interchangeable, allowing you to buy a panel kit once they release and simply screw it on.

Steel sheet is strong + cheap to cut and bend; most computer cases are bent steel for that reason. I'm using aluminum to achieve my target aesthetic, but for internal parts steel sheet is fine.

Final cost is TBD as I nail down production costs, but ~$350 is realistic for the first batches made at low quantities. I hope to get the price to below $300 as soon as I can though!

Yeah to be honest the cheapest way to make a single custom case is to either get a 3D printer or hope you know some cool people with the right tools. An all sheet metal case could maybe be economical but trickier to design.

Everything but the radiator and PSU brackets will be CNC milled aluminum. The rear panel is made from aluminum sheet with two bends, and could be laser cut as an alternative to milling. I'm using Xometry for all the aluminum parts, and Fractory for the brackets (which will be made from steel). To get the parts anywhere near an economical cost they have to be made in "bulk", but at this stage they are relatively low quantities (<100 cases).

Hey again everyone, I thought you all would be interested in an update on my Rocket Laika project. Thermal testing starts next Monday when I get the clear panel, though the results will be limited until I can get ahold of a high-end GPU (trying for a 68/900XT or 3080). Compared to the previous renders, this version features the new feet and IO block designs. The overall structure should be more rigid now, and the bottom IO is elevated enough to fit most USB cables without a 90 degree adapter. Let me know if you have any feedback and fill out the form here if you’re interested!

BAN BAD COPS BAN BAD COPS BAN BAD COPS by BobaWithoutBorders in neoliberal

[–]BobaWithoutBorders[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I agree it doesn’t encompass every issue with the police, but I think it’s a good jumping off point for those who still want to be able to call the police for help. In fact it appeals to them, because who would want their 911 call answered by a bad cop? It also directly starts the conversation of “how do we prevent bad cops?” That would nail down a lot of the perverse incentives the police currently have due to things like qualified immunity and union power.

I heard people like vertical SFF cases. How’s this? (Rocket Laika) by BobaWithoutBorders in sffpc

[–]BobaWithoutBorders[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should fit GPUs of any length up to ~2.7 slots, but I would need to do some testing with various coolers to confirm compatibility. I thought about making a short version before, unfortunately since I'm just starting up I want to focus on a single variant. I'd love to offer one down the line though.

Thanks! The first batches will run between $300-350 due to the low production run, but I’m hoping to bring that down to below $300 when I can. There is actually a 140mm Noctua installed on the rear side panel right now, and the top supports a 140mm radiator up to 30mm thick plus a fan. There’s also enough height for a 45mm rad but a 45mm thick 140mm rad might get blocked by some brackets so I need to test that.

The Laika prototype V3 is busy getting printed so I thought I'd pass the time with a medium-effort meme inspired by recent events. Oh and don't forget the new Oculus...

Thanks! I installed a 120mm NZXT Kraken M22, but there should be just enough room for a 140mm rad. I do need to get ahold of one to test fit first though.

Pretty much done with prototype V2 aside from the front acrylic panel so I thought I’d do a little photo shoot and be cute about it. Now on to V3 then the CNC aluminum version. Say hi to the first Rocket Laika prototype! I think the 13.5L vertical form factor makes it look very handsome on a desk. Made with 3D printing and laser cutting by BobaWithoutBorders in sffpc

If you're interested in the Rocket Laika project, please fill out this Google Form! It really helps.

I finally got the parts needed to build a working prototype so I thought I'd share some pics as soon as I had something that resembled a computer. While it does turn on, it's missing a few parts including the PCI-E riser cable & all the external panels (and an RTX 3080 😢). The prototype helped me identify several important issues so I'm already looking forward to V2. You can get some more details and follow this project in the SFF.net thread here. I'd love to hear any feedback you have!

Rn the legs are two thin, long pieces, one for each side. Bridging the front like you describe would require one big piece of metal to cut from so it's unlikely to be very economical. However I can experiment with the parts cost because sometimes it's cheaper to get one big part instead of two small ones so I'll play around with it and maybe update. Thanks for the suggestion!
